Kochi: The tank of a bio-toilet in the general compartment of a superfast express reportedly touched the rail due to overcrowding on Saturday evening. However, a mishap was averted thanks to the timely intervention of alert passengers on Alappuzha-Chennai express train. The problem was discovered when the train reached Angamaly station around 6.25pm. In the second compartment from the engine, one half of the space is taken up by courier parcels from the railway mail service while the other half is available for passengers as general compartment.“We suspect the tank was affected due to overcrowding on one side of the compartment. A preliminary enquiry will be conducted to verify the exact reason. The coach had to be detached and due to this the train was stuck at Angamaly station for 90 minutes,” said railways area manager (Ernakulam) Nidhin Norbert. Passengers felt a jerk and heard some sound from below the compartment as...
the bottom of the tank touched the ballast from Edappally. When the train reached Aluva, they complained to railway officials. When the train reached Angamaly, railway officials halted the train. Officials of the mechanical wing found the tank of the bio toilet was not in its usual position.“If the train continued its journey by accommodating more passengers in the already-crowded coach, chances for derailment were high. The coach was built in 1997. Though it might have undergone overhauling, the spring and coach might have suffered a lot of wear and tear,” said a railway protection force (RPF) official. RPF will also prepare a report on the incident. The seat capacity of a coach is 150. When a portion of it is used for mail service, passengers might use 100 seats. When the train reached Aluva, it was overcrowded, said the official.

Railways have withdrawn speed restrictions imposed in three corridors to improve operations and punctuality of trains.
With the easing of the speed curbs imposed by the Commissioner of Railway Safety and the Railway Board, locomotives can now haul trains at 80 kmph on the up and down lines of the Angamaly station, 45 kmph on the 400-metre stretch near Thripunithura, and 80 kmph in 4.3 km along the Changanacherry-Thiruvalla section.
“The speed restrictions prevailing in these corridors were 15 kmph, 20 kmph, and 15 kmph respectively. The easing of the speed
restrictions and allowing trains to run at the sanctioned sectional speed have resulted in mail and express trains saving up to half-an-hour and improving punctuality,” Divisional Railway Manager, Thiruvananthapruam, Shirish Kumar Sinha told The Hindu.
The restrictions had been imposed while laying the tracks or when the track renewal works were undertaken. The speed on the 400-m stretch near Thripunithura in the Kayamkulam- Kottayam- Ernakulam corridor will be enhanced to 60 kmph in two months.
The authorities are upbeat that the punctuality of trains had gone up to 75% and have fixed 80% for December. Trains are running at 100 kmph in the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Kayamkulam corridor and 80 kmph in the Ernakulam-Shoranur and the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Shoranur corridors. The DRM said complaints from commuters on the late running of trains had come down drastically.
“We have identified another 10 speed cautions in the State and attempts are on to remove the restrictions this year itself,” Mr. Sinha said. If the restrictions cannot be withdrawn fully, speed would be enhanced to improve operations.
