HYDERABAD: The military and defence infrastructure created by the British and the Nizam 143 years ago is now saving the lives of thousands of Covid-19 patients by aiding in timely supply of oxygen tankers to hospitals.
The military railway siding in Secunderabad and the Air Force station at Begumpet, which played a key role in World War II, are once again on a war-footing mode to save the lives of Covid-19 patients in Hyderabad.
While the military railway siding built in 1878 is facilitating roll-on and roll-off of oxygen tankers between Hyderabad
and Angul in Odisha, the Air Force station, set up in 1934, is helping in the airlift of oxygen tankers from Hyderabad to Rourkela. The old railway infrastructure created by the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railways (NGSR) for British troops in Secunderabad Cantonment had helped in saving the lives of innumerable people during the influenza pandemics in 1918 and 1957 and several epidemics in between through movement of healthcare equipment, medicines and medical staff. It also served during World War I and II.
The Air Force station at Begumpet, though a late entrant when compared with the military railway siding in Secunderabad, nevertheless played a crucial role in the movement of men and medicines during World War II and during medical emergencies in the later years. Now in its 87th year, the Air Force station including Begumpet airport has always risen to the emergent situations, be it medical or military.
Earlier this week, the Oxygen Express loaded with five empty oxygen tankers left the military siding and after refill of oxygen at Angul, the train is returning to Secunderabad and will reach on Sunday or Monday. The five tankers have a total liquid oxygen capacity of 63.6 tonnes.
According to heritage expert P Anuradha Reddy, the rulers in the erstwhile princely Hyderabad state had created infrastructure with foresight that could help people even centuries later. “The military siding was set up in 1878 by extending the Wadi-Secunderabad railway line built during 1874. This gave a seamless connectivity between Secunderabad Cantonment (SC) and Bombay (Mumbai) on one hand and SC and Madras (Chennai) on the other. The British brought horses for the cavalry and a cavalry barracks station was set up. The infrastructure is so robust that even today it is helping in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic,” Anuradha, who is also the convener of INTACH Hyderabad, told TOI.
Established in 1934 as a grassfield runway, the Begumpet airport was taken over by the British during WW-II as an elementary training flying school in 1941. Initially commercial operations were from Hakimpet and passengers were carried in buses from Secunderabad to Hakimpet for boarding.

It’s a dream come true after relentless efforts. Gajwel town, the constituency represented by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is going to witness railway line before the end of the month.
After getting Godavari water from Kaleshwaram to Kondapochammasagar in the constituency, Mr. Chandasekhar Rao is going to fulfil another promise made to people shortly.
This is part of Manoharabad (Medak district)-Kothapalli (Karimnagar district) railway line stretching for about 151 km. The project was taken up at an estimated cost of ₹1,061 crore. The project was taken up in four phases — Manoharabad-Gajwel,
Gajwel-Siddipet, Siddipet-Sircilla and Sircilla-Kothapalli.
Initially, the work from Manoharabad to Gajwel was completed and the trail run has been taking place. The Gajwel railway station was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. Two more stations – Nacharam and Begumpet — were also developed between Manoharabad and Gajwel railway stations.
“We have designed the railway track to run trains with a speed of 120 km. The internal trail run is being done and the authorities from Commissioner of Railway Safety will visit and test the track and they will fix the speed of the train. It may take place one week or 10 days. The green signal to run trains has been accorded by the authorities from Railway Safety wing. Local authorities will decide the date to run trains once the permission is accorded by the authorities concerned,” said D. Subrahmanyam, Deputy Chief Engineer, South Central Railway (SCR).
“The idea of laying new railway line between Manoharabad and Kothapalli is mooted by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and the required funds were released by both State and Central governments. The first phase of railway line work was completed between Manoharabad and Gajwel. In the next phases, it will be extended to Siddipet, Sircilla and Kothapalli,” Lok Sabha member K Prabhakar Reddy told The Hindu.
The proposal for railway line between Manoharabad and Kothapalli was mooted and the foundation stone was laid in 2017 and being realised by 2020, hardly four years from actively moving the proposal.

Hyderabad: In an attempt to decongest the Secunderabad railway station in the city, South Central Railway (SCR) is aiming to provide halts for express trains at Malkajgiri, Lingampally, Begumpet, Falaknuma, and Bolarum. With more than 229 trains running from the Secunderabad railway station, it sees an average daily footfall of 1.8 lakh passengers. According to SCR, the Secunderabad station has met its capacity with 10 platforms and there is no scope of expanding the physical infrastructure of the station given the area it is established in."We are aiming at developing different stations across the city as terminal stations to be able to disperse the passenger rush to other stations.Passengers have long been demanding that more express trains halt at Malkajgiri station due to tremendous increase in the number of passengers in the belt."Malkajgiri railway station already sees more than 3,500 passengers on an average per day. During discussions with authorities it...
has been acknowledged that if more trains halt here, the numbers will increase radically," said a member of Suburban Train and Bus Travellers Association."A number of passengers from the area have to board their trains from either Kacheguda or Secunderabad for the lack of an option," he added. To address the issue, SCR is now providing halts for ten express trains at Malkajgiri and around 20 express trains pass through it."We are also aiming at completing the development of Cherlapally station into a satellite terminal at a cost of Rs 221 crore within the next three years, the development works have begun," an SCR official told TOI, adding that the move should help in catering to the need of rail users from the outskirts of the city.Due to land hurdles, a six platform terminal station will be developed which should help with the running of MMTS trains across the routes, informed railway officials. With the fast expansion of the city along Gachibowli and Patancheru, Serilingampally has also emerged as an important station for the passengers in the suburbs."Serilingampally sees an average of 25, 000 passengers per day and around 100 trains including MMTS, passenger, express and other long-distance trains run through it," said the SCR official. To cater to the passengers in western parts of the city, SCR is also extending the facilities in Lingampally as a terminal station where at present 40,000 passengers commute through it per day."An impressive number of 108 MMTS trains, 14 pairs of express and mail trains along with eight pairs of passenger trains halt at the station," a senior railway official told TOI."We are using the MMTS station as a rail transit hub to decongest the busy terminals like Secunderabad, Kacheguda and Hyderabad. We will soon be linking with the station in the future by extension of trains or additional stoppages," he added saying that the move will help see an additional 20,000 passengers daily. In the last couple of years, the authorities are working on improving the infrastructure at Lingampally to provide rail connectivity while taking the passenger heat off Sunderabad railway station as the rail users demands a full-fledged rail terminal at Lingampally.

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) is adopting multi-pronged strategies to ease passenger flow and optimise punctuality of its trains at various stations in the State capital. As part of this, the SCR has decided to complete the development of Cherlapalli station into a satellite terminal at a cost of Rs 221 crore within three years and decongest the stations at Secunderabad, Kacheguda and Hyderabad.According to officials, all the three major terminals in the city are saturated due to large amounts of traffic. Cherlapalli station, which is around 18 km from Secunderabad station, is centrally located and surrounded by important residential colonies. It is also connected well with the ORR. Therefore, it is being developed as a satellite railway terminal. Tenders have been finalised for an amount of Rs 117.25 crore and works will start shortly. In addition, there is a proposal to operate private train services from this terminal.Extension of trainsThe...
SCR has also extended train operations from Secunderabad and Kacheguda stations to Lingampalli. This was aimed at offering passengers a hassle-free travel by not having to take a bus or cab or MMTS to reach Secunderabad station to board these trains.Already 14 trains, including Secunderabad-Vijayawada Intercity Express, Secunderabad-Kakinada Goutami Express, Secunderabad–Tirupati Narayandri Express and Secunderabad–Visakhapatnam Janmabhoomi Express, have been extended to Lingampalli while more trains will join the list soon.Given the fast expansion of the city encompassing its suburbs along Gachibowli-BHEL-Patancheru, the Lingampalli station was turned from a local station to a major terminal after Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda. For this, SCR spent Rs 30 crore and improved the infrastructure in and around the station.Secunderabad Railway StationHalts at more stationsIn the past, local stations used to serve as halting points for MMTS trains and stops of Express trains here were rare. Passengers from suburbs used to have a tough time while boarding long distance trains as they need to reach the station one hour in advance to catch the train at major stations. However, things are slowly changing with railways providing halts for Express and Superfast trains at local stations. To balance passenger flow coming to different railway stations in twin cities, particularly Secunderabad, which registers around 1.8 lakh passengers daily, the SCR has been providing halts for Express trains at Malkajgiri, Begumpet, Falaknuma and Bolarum.According to Ch Rakesh, CPRO, SCR, Malkajgiri station has turned out to be a good point for halting Express trains as there are many rail travellers in this belt. “Our focus is to balance passenger flow and also improve punctuality,” he said.At Malkajgiri, the SCR has provided halts for several express trains, including Tirupati-Adilabad Krishna, between Secunderabad-Manmad Ajanta Express, Kacheguda-Repalle-Secunderabad Delta Express, Yeshvantpur-Indore weekly Express, Hyderabad-Jaipur weekly Express and Nagarsol-Chennai Central weekly Express. In addition, there was a demand to halt Express trains at Begumpet, which is being widely used by MMTS passengers. Accordingly, trains like Secunderabad-Pune Shatabdi Express, Hyderabad–Tirupati Rayalaseema Express, Bhubaneswar–Mumbai Konark Express have been provided halts at Begumpet.
