Ahmedabad: The metre gauge line connecting the city to Botad is likely to derail the schedule of commuters using roads in the western parts of Ahmedabad, such as Navrangpura, Vijay Crossroads, and Naranpura. The rail line cuts through the city’s west. The railways is conducting trial runs and plans to commission the track by March 2022.
The AMC has not made any provision for underpasses or overbridges to mitigate the effects of the track. Hence, traffic snarls are expected at the crossroads near the Navrangpura police station and other sites.
Divisional railway manager,
Bhavnagar, Manoj Goyal said that the inspection of the Ahmedabad-Botad track has been completed and the division is waiting to run a goods train on this section first. After the successful operation of the goods trains for 1.5 months, the railways will operate passenger trains on this track. “We expect permission to run the goods train shortly,” Goyal said.
The newly laid Ahmedabad-Botad line passes through Naranpura, Navrangpura, Paldi, and Sarkhej among other places. A senior officer in the traffic consultative committee said that there are about 10 major crossings between the Sabarmati junction and Sarkhej. The officer said that traffic jams are likely at these spots. Before commencing work on the line in 2018-19, the railways had informed the AMC. The intimation was given so that the civic body could create underpasses and overbridges to deal with the anticipated traffic problems.
The Ahmedabad-Botad line is further connected to Bhavnagar via Dhola. At present, the Bhavnagar-Bandra train takes the Bhavnagar-Dhola-Botad-Limbdi-Ahmedabad route. The 298km distance between Bhavnagar and Ahmedabad was covered in 5 hours and 50 minutes on the old route. The new route will cut the distance by at least 35km.
A senior railway officer said that at least five mail and express trains and an equal number of goods trains are likely to pass through the city using the new track. This will mean that each crossing will be closed for nearly 10 minutes.
“There could be more traffic jams than before at the railway crossings in the city. In all, there are 32 level crossings, big and small, along the Ahmedabad-Sarkhej route with no fewer than 16 between Sabarmati and Gandhigram railway stations,” the officer said. “Increased activity on this track will necessitate the stoppage of the city’s vehicular traffic more frequently.” The officer added: “Earlier, when citizens raised their voice against traffic jams, it was decided to terminate all metre gauge trains at the Gandhigram station instead of the Kalupur station.”
Officials said that, in fact, goods trains from Bhavnagar will also be diverted to this line, which might take the total number of trains passing on the Ahmedabad-Botad track up to 12.
Rajesh Shah, a resident of Navrangpura, said major problems are afoot. He said that in his area, one lane comes in from Mithakhali and another from the Navrangpura bus stand, forming a T-junction which is a traffic bottleneck. Shah said that road dividers may alleviate the problem.
Ankit Patel, an Amdavadi who frequently uses this stretch, said that vehicles coming from Mithakhali and heading to Ashram Road contribute to the snarls. He said a one-way road in this section could ease the jams. He said commuters could take the road to the Navrangpura bus station to reach the Navrangpura police station. This will help the AMC smoothen the traffic on this junction, he said.Complications ahead
Railway officials said that the conversion of the Jetalsar-Dhasa broad gauge track could add to the number of trains passing through the city. “It is possible that trains from Porbandar will also run on the new Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar track via Botad,” an official said. “Currently, these trains take the Jamnagar-Rajkot-Viramgam route to reach Ahmedabad.” The new route will save rail passengers’ time, but will heighten traffic tensions in the city.

સાબરમતીથી બોટાદ સુધી મીટર ગેજને બ્રોડગેજમાં તબદીલ કરવાની કામગીરી લાંબા સમયથી ચાલી રહી હતી જે લગભગ પૂર્ણ થઈ ગઈ છે. ત્યારે રેલવે દ્વારા આ ટ્રેકના ઈન્સ્પેક્શન માટે કમિશનર ઓફ રેલવે સેફ્ટી (સીઆરએસ)ને જરૂરી દસ્તાવેજો સાથે પત્ર લખ્યો છે. ઓક્ટોબર દરમિયાન આ રૂટ પર સીઆરએસ ઈન્સ્પેક્શન પૂર્ણ કરી 15 નવેમ્બર સુધીમાં સાબરમતીથી બોટાદ સુધી ટ્રેન શરૂ કરાશે તેમ પશ્ચિમ રેલવેના જનરલ મેનેજર આલોક કંસલે જણાવ્યું હતું.
તેમણે વધુમાં જણાવ્યું કે, સાબરમતીથી બોટાદ લાઈનની ગેજ કન્વર્ઝનની કામગીરી કોરોનાને મોડી પડી હતી. હવે આ કામગીરી પૂર્ણ થઈ છે ત્યારે લોકોની સતત માગણીને ધ્યાનમાં રાખી દિવાળી પછી આ રૂટ પર ટ્રેન શરૂ કરી દેવાશે. કોરોનાના કેસ ઘટ્યા બાદ હવે રેલવે દ્વારા 90 ટકા ટ્રેનોનું સંચાલન શરૂ કરી દેવાયું છે. તેમણે વધુમાં જણાવ્યું કે, 2023ના અંત સુધીમાં
દેશભરના તમામ ટ્રેકનું ઈલેક્ટ્રિફિકેશન કરી દેવાનો લક્ષ્યાંક છે. ત્યારે પશ્ચિમ રેલવેમાં 62 ટકા જેટલું ઈલેક્ટ્રિફિકેશન કામ પૂર્ણ થઈ ગયું છે.
હાલમાં ફક્ત 1800 કિલોમીટર રૂટનું ઈલેક્ટ્રિફિકેશન બાકી છે. જેમાંથી લગભગ 1000 કિલોમીટર રૂટનું ઈલેક્ટ્રિફિકેશન કામ 2021ના અંત સુધીમાં પૂર્ણ કરી દેવાશે. બાકીના 800 કિલોમીટરનું કામ 2022માં પૂર્ણ કરી દેવામાં આવશે.

Residents in Central Gujarat have renewed their demand for setting up 45km Arnej-Tarapur railway line that can shorten travel time between Saurashtra-Kutch and south Gujarat. The Arnej-Tarapur railway line proposal is one of the oldest proposals pending under consideration with the Indian Railways since decades. In 2012, the then union railway minister Dinesh Trivedi had even announced it as a new line survey to be taken up in 2012-13. The summary of surveys in progress by the end of 2014 in Western Railways shows that the survey was targeted to be completed in 2015-16.
The Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (G-RIDE), a joint venture of Gujarat government and Ministry of Railways, shows the broad gauge line project estimated at the cost of
Rs 484 crore is an “upcoming project”. G-RIDE’s website reflects that feasibility cum bankability study of the railway line has been completed by the consultants. “G-RIDE has approached Railway Board to accord in-principle approval to G-RIDE for execution of this project by forming a project (special purpose vehicle) SPV under 100 % equity model with GoG and MoR being principle equity holders in proportion of 51:49,” the status report of the project states.
Kheda MP Devusinh Chauhan and Anand MP Mitesh Patel alias Bakabhai too have approached the railways ministry and asked Vadodara railway division to expedite the project.
“Railway connectivity from Ahmedabad-Botad to new Arnej-Tarapur railway line can immensely benefit locals. While the movement of passenger trains can be quicker towards Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh and south Gujarat, goods train too will reach two hours early to Mumbai,” said a resident Girish Dave.

INDIA: Regular operation of electrically-hauled double-stack container trains on the Indian Railways network began on June 10, with the start of electric haulage on the 270 km Palanpur – Botad section of the Western Railway.
IR began exploring the feasibility of running double-stack trains under overhead electrification in 2008, as part of its planning for the Dedicated Freight Corridors.
In order to allow the use of conventional flat wagons rather than well wagons, it was decided to look at raising the contact wire height. Two WAG-7 electric locomotives fitted with high-reach pantographs were
tested on the 35 km Jakhapura – Tumka section of the East Coast Railway which had been equipped with high-rise overhead line equipment.
Following the trials, IR settled on a contact wire height of 7 450 mm and a catenary height of 8 650 mm, with a tension of 10 kN as the standard for its DFC electrification. Wiring of the Western DFC is now underway, with electric operation on the Rewari – Madar section expected to begin shortly.
IR subsequently decided to install high-rise OLE on the 1 400 km conventional line between the key freight hub at Rewari southwest of the capital and the port of Pipavav in Gujurat, which is already being used by diesel-hauled double-stack trains. Around 70% of the wiring on this route has now been commissioned, with multiple installation teams at work as part of the national electrification campaign.
IR’s Executive Director, Railway Electrification, Bhupender Singh Bodh told Railway Gazette International that ‘all efforts are on to achieve through electric operation of double-stack trains from New Delhi to Pipavav by the third quarter of the current financial year’. This would see the work completed by the end of 2020. However, he reported that ‘progress has been severely affected by workforce constraints and supply chain issues’ as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since Last 9 days,IRCTC employees are moving towards their goal of‘No o­ne Sleeps Hungry’ , without fear of any difficulties.In order to make the efforts of IRCTC successful, Railway Protection Force & Commercial Departments of Western Rly,
as well as BMC have also stepped in to match with every steps. 43563 meals were prepared at Mumbai Central base kitchen and 16437 at Ahmedabad base kitchen during last 9 days.

Sukrit logistics were distributed by Vadodara division. Rajkot division supplied 217 food packets in nearby station area. 210 food packets and Ration kits received from commercial staff and NGOs were distributed at Botad, Veraval and Sihor stations by Bhavnagar division.. Ratlam division distributed 350 food packets near station area. In addition to this Rotary club of Umargam distributed face masks to station master and other o­n duty Rly staff at Umargam station & RPF at Dahanu Road station. 1500 homemade masks were given to RPF Mumbai Division .
