Southern Railway is planning to commission a slew of projects - the 11km third line between Guduvanchery and Singaperumal Koil, and gauge conversion of 37km on the Madurai-Usilampatti line by the end of this month, the 1.7-km-long fourth line between Attipattu Pudunagar to Attipattu by March, and doubling the line between Usilampatti to Bodinaikanur by April.
Electrification of 74km Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai which is being undertaken by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) and 40km Thiruvarur to Karaikkal port by railway electrification wing will also be commissioned by end of March, said Southern Railway general manager John Thomas at the Republic Day celebration on Sunday.
said station development works at Chennai Egmore, Madurai, Salem and Tiruchchirappalli were being carried out. The zone is looking at eliminating manned level crossings in the coming years. Southern Railway's gross earnings and passenger earnings improved by 2.59% and 8.27 %, he said.
Divisional railway manager of Chennai division P Mahesh said the division was laying stress on improving punctuality of trains including suburban trains.

Tiruchirappalli (TPJ): One of the new Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rakes with toilets and other features provided to the Tiruchi Railway Division recently was put into regular operation on Wednesday.
The swanky DEMU with aeronautically designed power cars was put into service in the Tiruchi-Karaikal broad gauge section.
Manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited, Bangalore, the new rake was subjected to trials before being used for regular operations.
DEMU with six trailing cars and two power cars is equipped with toilets in each trailing car – a facility that is absent in conventional DEMU coaches.
The Tiruchi-Karaikal section was chosen for operation of the new DEMU train as there was good patronage in the route, railway officials said.
The new rake was flagged off by Divisional Railway Manager A.K.Agarwal at Tiruchi Junction on Wednesday evening.
The DEMU rakes are spacious with extra provision for standing in each one of the trailing car. The vestibule coaches with sliding doors have fibre reinforced plastic in the interiors.
The second new DEMU rake would be put into operation in a few days with the divisional railway authorities planning to operate it in the Tiruchi-Cuddalore-Vriddhachalam section.
The officials said Tiruchi Division would soon be getting two more new DEMU rakes in the near future. The first DEMU rake with toilets was put into use in Tiruchi railway division in 2012.

Puducherry (PDY): The Tamil Nadu Puducherry Citizens Council for Railway Development has urged the government to exert pressure on the Railway Ministry and expedite implementation of the Mamallapuram-Cuddalore railway project.
M. Sivasankaran, president of the council said the project was conceived in 2008 and the Union Railway Ministry approved and accorded sanction for the new line. However, the project did not kick start even after lapse of considerable time.
The Southern Railway has revised the original estimate for laying a broad-gauge line between Cuddalore and Puducherry as part of the Chennai –
Mahabalipuram-Puducherry-Cuddalore new line project in 2014. It has also admitted that on the alignment of the line to run through the Union Territory, opinion varies between the Southern Railway and the Puducherry government.
An Engineering department official from Southern Railway Hqrs stated this in response to the query raised by the Tamil Nadu – Puducherry Council for Railway Development about the status of the Chennai-Cuddalore rail project.
President of the Council M. Sivasankaran told that the Southern Railway official in his letter stated that earlier it was proposed to construct the broad-gauge line between Puducherry and Cuddalore (Varakkalpattu) at a cost of Rs. 397.51 crore.
However, as per the instruction of the Railway Board the proposed limited-use-subway and the road-over-bridge had been substituted with a level crossing. Accordingly a revised estimate for Rs. 195.86 crore had been prepared and sent to the Railway Board for its consideration. The Puducherry government should coordinate with Tamil Nadu and finalise the corridor and exert pressure on the Railway Board. The Union government has already indicated that only sanctioned projects will get budgetary support. Hence, the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments should coordinate for speedy implementation of the project.
