The Elephant Gate Bridge near Chennai Central is set to become history. Starting today, Southern Railway has decided to begin demolition of the 105 year old bridge between Basin Bridge and Chennai Central stations.
Numbered by Southern Railway as Bridge 9R, Elephant Bridge acts as the entry/exit point for the trains coming in and going out of Chennai Central.
The narrow bridge, just about 50 metres wide, allowed only about 8 lines to go under it. On one side of the bridge is the Basin Bridge station, Basin Bridge Coaching Depot and
...

the now-defunct Salt Cotaurs Parcel Depot (now made space two suburban tracks laid).
On the other side is the sprawling Chennai Central station with 12 functional platforms and many parcel and other small sidings for parking short rakes, tourist coaches, and accident relief trains. The other side also has the Chennai Central Suburban terminal that has 5 platforms and a couple of extra lines to park idling EMUs.
With such sprawling railway utilities on either side, the narrow bridge was acting as a chicken’s neck, often holding up various services and infuriating passengers. Even the construction of two additional slow lines for EMUs towards Arakkonam has only partially helped.
The Railways had proposed to demolish the close to 105-year old bridge and build a new one for the Chennai Corporation. After long years of to and fro, Chennai Corporation accepted the proposal.
There was a further small delay in shifting a lot of utilities’ cables from the bridge. The Chennai Traffic Police had also barricaded the bridge and stopped all traffic for a few months now.
With all this work completed, and the lockdown preventing any traffic, Southern Railway is utilizing the time to demolish the bridge over a week beginning today. The officials have announced a slew of diversions and changes to the workmen and parcel specials over the next two days. The details are:
·         Workmen specials will be dealt from Chennai Beach instead of Chennai Central, with rakes being maintained at Chennai Egmore.
·         Most parcel specials will be diverted to Chennai Egmore.
“This new bridge will be about 150 metres wide – large enough to accommodate a large number of lines. This will eliminate the bottleneck and allow more simultaneous operations,” according to official sources. He also added, “hopefully, all the waiting for the passengers almost at the doorstep of the terminal station should be a thing of the past once the bridge is ready.”
The same hope is reflected by some regular passengers. “Most times, the Charminar Express from Hyderabad is well before time at Ennore and Tiruvottiyur. However, this bottleneck holds up the train and we end up reaching Chennai Central well after the scheduled arrival – a colossal waste of up to an hour,” says Sriram, a regular traveller.
Hopefully, the new bridge will end the woes of both the passengers and the Southern Railway officials in one fell swoop.

This bridge isn't a big monument or an heritage site. If anything of great historical significance is associated with this bridge then there may be a need for its preservation. On the contrary it is just a normal bridge built for the movement of road traffic. Sooner or later all old utility structures without much historical significance will have to be demolished to build infrastructure needed for the present times. Preservation is an expensive affair and not all structures needs to be preserved. Development, cost of preservation and historical significance needs to be taken into account before taking a decision on heritage structures. Coming to this bridge, it has come to the end of its life. Four wheeler traffic was stopped sometime back as the bridge was not suitable. Debris started falling on the tracks. Now it is the time for this bridge to go and moreover it always hindered railway...

development around Chennai Central. Railways and the Corporation of Greater Chennai has taken the right decision to utilise the lockdown to demolish this bridge. Infact people wanted the demolition much earlier.

CHENNAI : With an aim to address the long-standing problem of access to hygienic and fresh food for famished travellers, time-starved professionals and anybody on move, Frshly a food-dispensing retail start-up is serving fresh food. Launched in 2013, Frshly serves fresh and hot food from the best restaurant brands, within just 90 seconds, much like withdrawing money from an ATM.  There are  18 automated outlets, at railway stations, airports, IT parks, corporate hubs and hospitals, across Bengaluru, Chennai, Secunderabad, Kolkata and Aurangabad.
The concept of this cutting-edge food solution came to Satish Chamyvelumani, founder and CEO of Frshly, when he was travelling by train. He wasn’t happy with the food options he got on his journey which triggered him to solve the problem. For

people on the move and who are travelling, fresh, quick and hot food is a far-fetched dream. To fill this gap, Frshly was built and then partnered with branded players.Satish says, “Frshly, operates on an Internet of Things (IoT) platform. This is a new concept and we are the first in the world to come up with this innovation. Frshly is filling a large gap by providing healthy, fresh and hot food, within 90 seconds.”
“We have partnered with branded players who have a good reputation in terms of taste, quality as well as hygienic food-handling practices. The technology in our systems keeps the food fresh and heats it up before being delivered to the customers. All one needs to do is pick, pay and eat,” he adds.“We have received two rounds of funding till date and we have raised $ 5 million from investors.  The business model is profitable, scalable and has a huge market,” says Satish.
Based on what consumers have been ordering, and using their prediction algorithm, Frshly provides the product data to the restaurants to prepare a set of dishes just before peak meal hours. The food is prepared, hygienically packed, in the specific food-grade 100% biodegradable trays and labelled at the kitchens. The labels log in the name of the food item, price, time of packing and the shelf life of the product which is usually six hours from the time of packaging. The trays are then brought to Frshly outlets and fed into the machine.
The proprietary technology automatically reads the food labels, displays the food item with the price on the machine, and keeps the food fresh. To ensure that the food offered is fresh, once the food reaches its stated shelf life the built-in algorithm automatically removes the item from the menu.
Frshly recently became one of India’s first innovative start-ups to have been recognised by a global platform — Moodie Davitt’s FAB Awards 2018 which has awarded Frshly with the ‘New Food and Beverage Concept of the Year’ title. The start-up has been awarded for its innovative tech outlet deployed at the Chennai airport.Sharing his advice to start-up aspirants Satish says, “Never give-up is what I advice the start-up aspirants. One needs to go ahead with his idea and find a way to implement it.”

Chennai: In a security measure to curb the never ending chain snatching incidents in Chennai city, the east zone police, comprising 3 of the 12 police districts in the city, have installed as many as 3,000 surveillance cameras at hundreds of identified chain snatching points, a senior police officer said on Sunday.

alias Vijaypaul (42) and
J. Sandeep (30), natives of Delhi who had reached Chennai by flight on July 4. Police who are on the lookout for three others, have recovered 25 sovereigns of gold and a bike from the arrested duo.
The official disclosed that they managed to nab the two with the help of CCTV footage.
“The suspects were staying in a lodge in Sowcrpet and purchased a second-hand motorbike to ride around and commit the crime,” police said. No footage of the crime was available but the police traced the suspects using the image of the bike captured from different CCTV footages of their travel routes after committing the crime.
The bike was finally spotted at the Central Railway Station, police said. The two were nabbed when they came to take the bike on Saturday evening, police said.
A special team has gone to Delhi to conduct inquiries and to nab the three persons who are still at large, said the officer, adding that the two have at least 30 cases pending in Delhi.
