In an incident that is eerily similar to Swathi’s murder in Nungambakkam railway station three years ago, another young woman has been attacked by a man in Chetpet railway station.
The woman suffered grievous injuries to her face and fingers and is undergoing treatment.
Thenmozhi (25), originally from Erode district, resides in a private working women’s hostel in Egmore and works in a government office in Chetpet.
also from Erode, allegedly knew Thenmozhi as a friend.
According to the police, the incident happened in Chetpet railway station around 8 pm on Friday. Thenmozhi, who works in a government office near Ega Theatre in Chetpet was in the station waiting for a train to get back to her room. Surendar, who allegedly knew Thenmozhi, attacked her with a knife.
In the attack,Thenmozhi suffered serious injuries on her chin and fingers. After attacking her, Surendar allegedly jumped in front of a local train and was seriously injured. The onlookers rescued Thenmozhi rushed her to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. Surender has been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment.
Speaking to TNM, V Balakrishnan, Inspector General (Railways) said the exact motive behind the attack was not clear.
“Witnesses have told us that they saw Thenmozhi and Surendar talking and then suddenly he attacked her. He has severely wounded her face and she collapsed. He then jumped in front of a train and attempted suicide,” he said.
Adding that Thenmozhi lived in Chennai and Surendar had come to Chennai from Erode, informing his family that he was attending a wedding here, V Balakrishnan was unable to confirm if members of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) were present at the station when the incident happened.
A senior official in the Southern Railways however confirmed that police were present on the platform.
"We have one staff in every station and the problem is that we don't have the manpower to cover all parts of the platform. Between the RPF and GRP, the platforms are somehow covered by one person for security. After the murder of Swathi in Nungambakkam we installed CCTVs there but we have given a proposal for the same in 136 stations but there is no progress regarding this on the Government's side," he adds.
In 2016, a young woman named Swathi was murdered in broad daylight in Nungambakkam station by a man named Ramkumar. Ramkumar had murdered her for rejecting his advances. The police had arrested Ramkumar and he was imprisoned in Puzhal, where he allegedly ended his life by biting onto a live wire. The case was formally closed in 2017 since the accused was dead.

CHENNAI: In a bid to to avoid being hit by an express train, a 37-year-old man walking on the tracks between Nungambakkam and Chetpet railway stations on Saturday morning jumped into the River Cooum and drowned. He was stuck in the sludge.
Police identified him as R Balaji, a lorry mechanic of Peri Eri Salai in Anna Nagar.
Afew residents from slum tenements along the river bank noticed the man inside the water and informed railway police control room. A team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel arrived and alerted the Choolaimedu police.
A team of the Choolaimedu police station, after an inspection, confirmed that the man fell off the railway flyover and drowned. A Government Railway Police (GRP) team from Egmore registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and sent the body to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for autopsy.
An Aadhaar card recovered from Balaji's trousers helped police trace his family. A bachelor, Balaji is survived by hisfather Rajaram, mother and a younger brother, police said.
Police said it was still not clear why Balaji had been walking on the railway tracks towards Chetpet. His family members told police Balaji had lefthome on Friday night after he received a call about a problem.
Police said there were two tracks running along the railway flyover above the river. Both tracks have a two-and-ahalf-foot gap in the middlethat is visible only after one steps on to the flyover, an officer said. Balaji may have been walking along and may have suddenly seen the train hurtling towards him. With no place to run, he may have jumped into the river, he added.
"The place where Balaji fell is full of sludge and garbage dumped indiscriminately.Hewouldhavebeen trapped in thesludge,"theofficer said.
