135-Year-Old Portuguese-Era Building Near The Dood Sagar Falls Has Been Discovered.
The South-Western Railway Department of the Hubli Division has found a 135-year-old Portuguese building in the Western Ghats.
Located in the Uttara Kannada district on the Karnataka-Goa border, the building has been closed for decades.
It is a two storied ancient building located at the Braganza Ghat, near Castel Rock, just half a kilometer from the country's famous Dudh Sagar Falls.
Officials of the Southwest Railway have shared information about the discovery of this ancient building and the Railways Department is proposing to conserve the building and allow heritage lovers to stay on the trip.
According to PK Mishra, additional general manager of Southwest Railways, “The 1,200-square-foot 2-story building served as a railway station when the first meter gauge railway opened in 1885.
He explained that if there was a station master room on the ground floor, the other two rooms on the same floor would be used as a toilet and storage, while the first floor would have a large drawing room, bedrooms and kitchens, while the second floor would have a panoramic view.
This two storied building was built in 1885 by the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company.
PK Mishra said it was part of the WIPGR's historic project when the Marmagao port was built in Goa.
How did it close?
During this period many Portuguese buildings were demolished during the gauge conversion. In this case it is also ruined. They say that the now unearthed building is a testament to history and an interesting architectural feature of the Portuguese period.

Picture Credit: The New Indian Express. Even as we go about exploring heritage buildings and historical landmarks, what many of us often don’t realise is there’s still so much more about the past for us to learn. As if a testament to this idea, the authorities of the Hubli division of South Western Railway made an interesting discovery recently. A 135-year-old heritage structure dating back to the Portuguese era was unearthed on the Karnataka-Goa border! Tucked away in the midst of the Western Ghats, the two-storey building was found near Castlerock, just 500 m from Dudhsagar. Supposedly constructed by the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway (WIPGR) company in 1885, it was part of the construction of Mormugao harbour in Goa and was a railway station back when the metre gauge rail line first opened in the region.

While several old structures from this era were destroyed, the discovery of this one comes as a delightful surprise and officials are already taking steps to restore it. With a rest house on the ground floor and a heritage gallery on the first and second floors, the restoration plans for the building are underway, as per reports. “Plans are also afoot to create a heritage walk around Dudhsagar to provide a beautiful view to tourists on this lush green stretch,’’ said P K Mishra, SWR Additional General Manager. Apart from giving you a peek into the region’s glory during the past era, the structure also lets you gape at the distinct Portuguese architectural elements of that time period. Sounds charming, right? We can’t wait for the restoration work to be completed so that we can check out this newfound piece of history!

'The South Western Railway (SWR) double-tracking is not for coal transportation. It is for passengers and tourism,' Sawant also said
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said the South Western Railway track-doubling project, spread across Goa and Karnataka, would be a game-changer for the tourism industry and passenger traffic while arguing that project's critics were wrong about claiming that the project would be used largely for coal transportation.
The chief minister, who is expected to conduct a high-level meeting with officials of the Goa government and the South Western Railways next week,

also said new technology would be used to reduce the pollution caused by coal transportation along the rail tracks currently.
"Yes, coal is being transported along the track for now, but we are looking to minimise it and use technology for reducing pollution. It will be a game-changer," Sawant told reporters in Margao town.
"The South Western Railway (SWR) double-tracking is not for coal transportation. It is for passengers and tourism," Sawant also said.
"Yes, coal is being transported along the track for now, but we are looking to minimise it and use technology for reducing pollution. It will be a game-changer," the chief minister said.
SWR's rail track doubling project from Castle Rock railway station in Karnataka to the Tinai ghat railway station in Goa is one of the three projects being opposed by Opposition parties and civil society groups, claiming the projects would lead to the axing of nearly 50,000 trees in the reserved forests in and around Mollem village in South Goa.
The opposition to the projects also stems from the argument put forth by critics, that the doubling tracking of railway tracks and expansion of the National Highway 4 would lead to increased transportation of coal imported to the Mormugao Port Trust in South Goa to steel mills in Karnataka's Bellary region.
The entire track doubling project stretches over a tract of 342 km out of which a 90 kms stretch is located in Goa. Out of the 90 km stretch, the SWR has managed to complete double tracking along only 7 km in the state, in wake of the prolonged protests.
SWR officials have also maintained that the track doubling was not being carried out to exclusively facilitate coal transport, but also to enhance passenger, logistics and military transport capabilities along the sector.

BENGALURU: The demand for Vistadome coaches, which have glass ceilings, to be used to showcase the pristine Western Ghats is only growing louder. The South Western Railways (SWR) is getting many suggestions and requests to use these coaches on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru line or even to Dudhsagar in Goa.Railway officials said that nothing has been finalised yet and they have to get the Railway Ministry’s approval. Experts and nature lovers point out that since the railway line runs through the ghats this would be an ideal opportunity to showcase the pristine beauty and get people interested in conservation. They suggest that these coaches be used in trains which ply during the day through the ghat sections.

firms have made videos using images of Vistadome coaches and the scenic beauty of the ghats between Bengaluru and Mangaluru to present a glimpse of how the journey in future will be. The videos have gone viral on social media. The SWR has so far got one Vistadome coach, which is an AC chair car which is GPS enabled with Wi-Fi, LED lights, a microwave oven and a refrigerator, but has not been tested on ground.
SWR, Divisional Railway Manager, Ashok Kumar Verma told TNIE that plying the train with the Vistadome coach depends on demand. “There is a demand for Sakleshpur, Mangaluru and Karwar. Some also want it to be run till Dudhsagar. The date of operation has not been decided,” he said.  He added that it will mostly be run in the ghats section.
“We are waiting for three more coaches. The services will also depend upon the availability of coaches. We are expecting to get three more Vistadome coaches by mid-April. We will need certification from the zonal headquarters to start operations,” he added.
Railways is also working on the rates to be levied on passengers. It will, however, be finalised by the Centre. Verma said that it will be on  par with the AC chair car rates. According to SWR, the AC chair car rate from Bengaluru to Chennai is between Rs 400-500, executive rate is between Rs 600-800 and that of Shatabdi is between Rs 1,800-1,900, depending on the distance. The SWR commercial section said that the rate of the Vistadome coaches is likely to be on par with Shatabdi.

Thousands of sleepers are released every year in view of track safety, during track renewals.SWR has found out a novel way to put these redundant concrete sleepers to use in the ghat section of Castle Rock- Dudh Sagar.
This ghat section has one of steepest gradients on Indian Railways. Track maintainers, gangmen and key men have to move on section by foot, for checking and ensuring safety of track. The Sleepers released from track after inserting new sleepers have been laid in inverted and longitudinal manner parallel to the track facilitating a pathway for Track maintainers and Keymen. Care has been taken to ensure that the vertical distance from rail level to pathway level is maintained suitably.
...
Pathway has been constructed in this ghat section for 12 Km using about 10,000 scrapped sleepers. The sleeper pathway helps in easy access of track for inspection by Railway officials. In addition Loco Pilots of trains use these paths to check their train formations during halts and when waiting for signal in this section. The Keyman/ Night patrolman/ Track Maintainer can also safely move to the shelter of track pathway, if there is any train movement during inspections. The pathway also provides easy platform for workers for loading and unloading rails sleepers during track renewal/ maintenance etc,.
In addition to pathway these sleepers have been used to prepare Trolley Refugee platforms where sleepers are placed laterally to the track in batches of 8 to 10. Trolley refugees are built at an interval of 100m and facilitates placing of trolley used for inspections during train movement. The trolley platforms are also being used for keeping rail dolly, trucked out Rails and Sleepers and even used as a resting place for Keyman after completion of his beat. Around 2,500 sleepers have been used for construction of trolley platforms.
Scrapped Sleepers are also put to used for constructing side drains in tunnels with intermediate distance of 600 mtrs. This prevents the track ballast from falling into the drains and allows free flow of rain water during the monsoons. Sleepers in double layer are also used as a Ballast retainer wall to prevent the shoulder ballast from falling off at steep locations.
Scrapped/released Rails are also being used to good effect by fixing of rail pegs of 1 m length at a regular intervals. Rails are also used as a ballast retainer and rail pegs at regular gaps help to keep the released sleepers that prevent the ballast from falling as a ballast retainer. The ballast retainers prevent ballast from falling due to vibrations in train movement. At bridge approaches retainers maintain sufficient ballast and elevated track retainers also obstructs the movement of animals from entering the track area and ensures safe train movements. Using of scrapped sleepers and rails is a very cost effective and time saving methodology. This all weather road will allow rain water to seep through during rainy season.
The work has been executed in challenging section in tough weather by team headed by Shri Neeraj Bapnas, Senior Divisional Engineer, West, Hubballi Division under the guidance of Shri Vipul Kumar, Principal Chief Engineer and Shri Arvind Malkhede, Divisional Railway Manager, Hubballi.
Shri A.K. Singh, General Manager South Western Railway appreciated the team for this work which will facilitate smooth movement of men and materials in the ghat section at negligible cost by reusing materials.
