The historic Old Railway Station premises in Ernakulam could offer local residents an escape from the hustle
and bustle of Kochi city, but it is now in a pathetic condition. Ask anyone in Kochi about the route to this
place and nobody would have even heard of any railway station other than North and South.
However, Google Maps can show you the way and
a visit to this eerily beautiful place would be an eye-opener.
Once a stately structure, the 'Ernakulam Goods' railway station is now an abandoned place with a crumbling
building overgrown with wild greenery.
Ironically, no one seems to remember that it was at this very railway station that Swami Vivekananda and
Rabindranath Tagore set foot during their visit to Kochi. Mahatma Gandhi, too, had arrived here while
heading to Vaikom to take part in the path-breaking agitation related to the temple there.
According to legend, Rama Varma, the Maharaja of Kochi, had sold the golden ornamental coverings of
elephants belonging to Poornathrayeesa Temple to fund the development of this railway station.
The rst train reached here on July 16, 1902. Passenger train services were conducted regularly till 1960, but
modernization of South and North railway stations sounded the death knell for the Old Railway Station. In
2001, the government converted the station into a goods shed, but that, too, was gradually abandoned.
Among the other notable historical gures who used the Old Railway station are Robert Bristow and Lord
Irwin. Bristow was instrumental in giving Kochi the present shape.
But presently the surroundings of the Old Railway Station remind a visitor of the wooded Cherukara station
on the Shoranur-Nilambur route even though the place is hardly 500 m from Banerjee Road, one of the
busiest areas in Kochi city.
An eerie atmosphere prevails with the dilapidated building, old railway tracks and the darkness created by
thickly growing trees that prevent sunlight from reaching the ground.
The owner of the nearest shop warns curious visitors enquiring with him about the path to the Old Railway
Station that they better keep off. People living in the neighbourhood are wary of anti-social elements who
have made the station their den. No wonder this large plot measuring 42 acres is now haunted as far as the
local people are concerned and they never even consider venturing into it.
But even now there is hope for better days. The station premises can be included in the tourism projects of
Kochi and suitable renovation carried out. It would then be a boon for the residents eager to nd a place to
relax in the heart of the city.

The development of Old Railway Station (ERG), located in heart of the city, into terminus station is finally on track with Southern Railways hastening track replacement and signaling works in the section and the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) initiating infrastructure development process.
The nearly 46-acre land behind the High Court was in an abandoned condition since 1990 when train handling facilities were shifted to the Ernakulam Junction railway station. However, its redevelopment was necessitated with the main station getting congested and in the wake of demand for suburban services
We've hastened
track replacement and signaling works, started in December last, so as to make the station ready for train operation in a year's time. Currently work of replacing metal sleepers with concrete ones is progressing in the stretch," said a senior railway official.
However, the train operation would commence only upon execution of first phase of station infrastructure project by the KRDCL, he added.
The KRDCL is awaiting nod of railway board to start implementing the Rs 505-crore infrastructure development project.
"The plan includes provision of terminal facilities with three passenger platforms, four stabling and two pitlines in the first phase. Commercial development activities, mainly construction of a hotel complex there, too have been proposed. We expect the railways to provide the sanction soon," said a KRDCL official.
The project is planned to be carried out on a public private partnership (PPP) model. The authorities are also planning to move the court for a stay on a recent order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning all construction activities in areas near Mangalavanam, a bird sanctuary, that include the ERG premise.
The development of the ERG was one among the seven projects taken up by the KRDCL in 2016. The station was built in 1902 by erstwhile Maharaja of Kochi.
Meanwhile, there are a few hurdles for realisation of the project. "The local administration should act proactively to rehabilitate 21 families who have encroached the railway land there," said K P Harihara Kumar, General Convenor, Ernakulam Old Railway Station Vikasana Samithy.

The Ernakulam Old Railway Station located near the High Court cuts a sorry figure today. Built by Maharaja Rama Varma XV, the railway station was the first to go operational in Kochi and commands an important place in the city’s history. But wait, there is hope. For after years of delay, the Railways has begun track renovations at the station. “Even though the work is eight years late, it is still a welcome move.
We had been demanding the station’s renovation and organised several agitations, dharnas, satyagrahas and demonstrations, besides approaching people’s representatives,” said K P Harihara Kumar, convenor, Ernakulam Old Railway Station Vikasana Samithy. Full-fledged renovation work would take place only after the 27 families who encroached upon the Railways’ lands
are rehabilitated, Kumar said. “That is the Kochi Corporation’s work. We had approached the Mayor in this regard following which Rs 2 crore was set aside in last year’s budget for the purpose. That was all,” he said, adding the corporation needs to speed up the process of shifting the encroachers.
“How can a civic body which looks after the city’s interests ignore the historic importance of one of its landmarks? The railway station is 110 years old and has the distinction of hosting Mahatma Gandhi and other big leaders of those days,” Kumar said. Division councillor Sudha Dileepkumar said though the Corporation had promised to clear the encroachments two years ago, nothing was done. “The renovation of a heritage railway station hangs in balance due to the civic body’s apathy,” she said.
The century-old tracks, which were buried under mud, silt and weed due to disuse, are being renovated from Pachalam to the station. Kumar said the Railways had sanctioned `1.45 crore for the purpose.A railway officer said the tracks are being removed and new ones are being laid including the sleepers. “As of now, the Railways will carry out the track renovation. The renovation of the station depends on when the corporation rehabilitates the encroachers,” the officer said.
A promise gone bad
Harihara Kumar said, former Union Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu had agreed to renovate the Ernakulam Old Railway Station and even sanctioned an amount. “However, it did not take off due to the apathy of the Railways authorities and the civic body,” he said. “It was said a ticket counter will be opened at the station, a station manager will be appointed and the station will be converted into a hub for passenger trains. It had been downgraded from a passenger hub to a goods halt. Later, even that stopped,” Kumar said. He said once the station becomes a passenger hub, the commuters’ rush faced at Ernakulam Junction can be somewhat taken care of. “Passenger trains going towards the north can be routed through here,” he said.

Not necessarily. Many major places haven't had any change in the station code even after a change in the city name (MAS, MS, BZA etc). And considering that train services to CHTS have been suspended again, there is no use of even changing the name.

Why should a station where no train arrives or departs require a code?!!
