In a major boost to the track doubling works in the Ettumanoor and Chingavanam corridor, the Railway overbridge (RoB) along NH 183 at Kanjikkuzhy is set to be thrown open to traffic this week.
According to officials, works on the structure are over while the curing period of the concrete slabs will end by Tuesday.
“The mandatory interval for the concrete works connecting the road and the bridge to get set will be over in a couple of days and the structure will be declared operational soon afterwards,” said an officer.

The 46-metre long and 14-metre wide bridge will have footpaths and crash barriers on both sides.
The Railways commenced works on the project in June last year but it ran into delays due to several reasons.
On completion of the bridge, the Railways plan to set up two additional tracks underneath while the existing track will be used for shunting operations.
Meanwhile, the authorities have expedited the works for the second RoB along Mother Teresa Road near Rubber Board headquarters.
The works are progressing here to relocate the pipeline network of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) that pass through the existing structure.
The cumulative cost for rebuilding the RoBs at Kanjikkuzhy and Rubber Board RoBs, is estimated to be ₹16 crore.
The completion of the construction of two bridges in Kottayam is expected to give major boost to the doubling works as the State Government has already handed over entire land acquired for the Ettumanoor-Chingavanam corridor.
Doubling works in the stretch have gathered pace with works progressing in six different locations along the stretch.
According to sources, it would take the Railways at least 24 months to complete the works on the stretch as against the earlier deadline of March 31, 2020.
The doubling works along the stretch involves clearing of a couple of rocky hills at Muttambalam and strengthening of the marshy ground between Kodoor and Chingavanam.

A Southern Railway delegation along with Thomas Chazhikadan, MP, on Monday reviewed the progress of the renovation works on the Kottayam railway station and the track doubling works between Ettumanur and Chingavanam.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chazhikadan urged Railways to expedite construction of the second entrance and the multi-level parking system at the Kottayam railway station.
The Central government has allocated ₹20 crore to renovate the station here, which will sport the indigenous Kerala design on completion of the work.
project also envisages developing the circulation area, besides renovating the pilgrim shelter.
The team also visited the stretch between Ettumanur and Chingavanam where track-doubling works are under way. The MP also urged the State government to expedite the acquisition of the 3.99 hectares of land required for completing the project.
Railways were asked to complete construction of the railway overbridges (ROB) at Mulanthuruthy, Karithas and Kuruppanthara.
The department has already set aside ₹29.94 crore and ₹19.96 crore for constructing the ROBs at Mulanthuruthy and Karithas respectively.
The cost of constructing the ROB at Kuruppanthara is estimated at ₹20 crore.
Meanwhile, directions have been issued to concrete the underpass at Samkarnthi to avoid waterlogging .
Officials said the department would be able to complete the track-doubling works in two years after acquisition of land.
The district administration has announced its plans to complete the much-delayed acquisition of land in the Ettumanur-Chingavanam corridor by invoking the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act (Larra Act)-2013 before September 30.
Clearing the delay in acquisition of land in the 16.6 km stretch is crucial in completing the double-laning of the 620-km Mangaluru Junction-Kottayam-Thiruvananthapuram Central corridor.
The railway delegation was represented by Southern Railway Deputy Chief Engineer (constructions) R. Nandagopan, and Assistant Executive Engineer Babu Zacharias and Haridasan.

Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Bengaluru circle, K. A. Manoharan has given the clearance for the newly laid 8-km double line from Kuruppanthara to Ettumanur in the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Kottayam-Mangaluru Junction corridor.
Mr. Manoharan, who inspected the 8-km stretch and conducted speed trial between the two railway stations on March 15, has given the nod to operate trains at a speed of 85 km per hour.
However, the train operations through the newly laid line will be possible only after the completion of Ettumanur yard works.
The opening of the 8-km line will also pave the way for a 96-km double line from Kayamkulam Junction to Ernakulam via Kottayam.
The construction wing of Railways has sought the permission of the Railway Board for the yard works that will involve regulation of trains. It will be completed by March 31 if the approval is obtained from the board on Friday, a top railway official said.

Double line will be available for Railways in 602 km in the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Kottayam-Mangaluru Junction corridor with the commissioning of the 8-km Kuruppantara-Ettumanur double line stretch soon. However, the 18-km corridor from Ettumanur to Chingavanam is the biggest challenge to throw open the 620-km double railway line from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Mangaluru Junction via Kottyam for traffic.
The commissioning of the 8-km stretch after mandatory inspection and speed trial by K.A. Manoharan, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Bengaluru circle, on Friday and completion of the Ettumanur yard work will provide double line in 96 km between Kayamkulam Junction and Ernakulam via Kottayam.
if the CRS gives the nod for the 8-km line, Railways will take up the work in the Ettumanur yard in April after getting the nod. Rail traffic along the doubled corridor will be possible only after April. Once the stretch is commissioned, 96 km of the 114 km from Kayamkulam to Ernakulam will become double line.
Railways are knocking at the doors of the State government for the 3.5 hectares needed from the State for doubling of the Ettumanur-Kottayam and Kottayam-Chingavanam corridors. A top railway official told The Hindu that ₹90 crore was deposited with the State way back in 2017 as the cost of land acquisition.
“We were told in January that year that the land would be handed over in May 2018 and it is unlikely to happen even in May 2019. The land acquisition is moving at a snail’s pace. It may take two years to complete the doubling works in the 18 km once the land is handed over by the State to us,” he added.
As many as five bridges have to be constructed in the Ettumanur-Kottayam and Kottayam-Chingavanum corridors.

At first place, it's a greatt acheivement that IR has been able to complete the Doubling of 602/620 kms on Kerala Trunk route...
The remaining 18 kms stretch will also be completed in future...
I still remember my frequent visits to Calicut/Kozhikode during 2006-2008, when doubling had just started there & locals were telling that it might never be completed thanks to the apathy from state govt & land acquisition issues in Kerala..

Agree to what you said. But i feel that so many stretches of doubling electrification has not had much impact in terms of reduction of travel time etc. Hoping that TVC divn and PGT division look into this aspect as well

Statutory inspection of the track on March 15
The interminable hold up of trains at Kuruppanthara and Ettumanoor stations in the Ernakulam and Kottayam section will soon be a thing of past with the railway authorities set to open a second track along the eight kilometre stretch.
Officials said the Commissioner of Railway Safety is slated to carry out the statutory inspection and speed trail of the track on March 15. An authorisation from the CRS will be followed by signalling and related works and the track will be set for commissioning by
April first week.
While the constructed speed of the section will be 110 km per hour, the department expects the CRS to approve a section speed of up to 90 km per hour, which could be raised at a later stage based on the annual track report by the CRS and by evaluating the weather conditions. The opening of the new line will also ensure a smooth passage of trains from Ettumanoor to Ernakulam, saving a running time of up to 10 minutes along the route.
Of the two Railway over bridges along the stretch, the Ettumanoor-Neendur ROB was already complete while works on the Mathur ROB is progressing fast.
Meanwhile, the authorities have commenced preparatory works for doubling of tracks between Ettumanoor and Kottayam.
To facilitate the works, the old ROB at Nagambodam near Kottayam railway station will be demolished using explosives later this month.
Official sources said the train traffic along the stretch would be regulated during the day of explosion as the overhead power cables would have to be detached ahead of the explosion. Upon clearing the debris, the authority will examine the fitness of the track underneath, before resuming traffic.
Approach road
The approach road linking up the old ROB will be cleared at a later stage, sources said.
The doubling of the 19 km long Chingavanam –Kottayam section is slated to extend well beyond the target date of March 2020 owing to a delay in acquisition of land.
The railway seeks to take over 3.5 hectares of land spread across two villages for setting up a second line along the stretch
