11 stations on CR, 8 on WR; upgrade will focus on making them less congested to allow for social distancing.
The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has received approval from the Railway Board for a Rs 947-crore revamp of 19 stations — 11 on the Central Railway (CR) and eight on the Western Railway (WR). MRVC has already begun planning the redesign of a few of these stations, with a focus on making them less congested to allow for social distancing. MRVC officials said that they received approval for the new designs of 14 of the 19 stations during the lockdown, when they were doing the paperwork for this multi-crore project. The 19 stations are Bhandup, Mulund, Kasara, GTB Nagar, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd,

Neral, Shahad, Thane and Dombivali on the Central Railway; and Mumbai Central, Khar, Jogeshwari, Kandivali, Bhayander, Mira Road, Vasai and Nallasopara on the Western Railway.
MRVC officials said they were mainly looking at remodelling smaller stations, which have remained congested during the lockdown even though local trains haven’t been open to all. An official, who did not wish to be named, said, “We want to create more breathing space at these stations. Their entrances will be widened, and ticketing counters, food stalls and other amenities will be shifted to the upper deck.”
Redesigns of 14 of the 19 stations have already been approved
The revamp of the 19 stations is part of the Rs 33,690-crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project-3A which will augment the suburban rail system, especially in the northern suburbs and across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.MRVC has awarded consultancies for architectural planning and environmental and social impact assessment, and has invited expressions of interest for a detailed design engineering consultancy. An MVRC official said the process was delayed because of Covid-19, but most of the concept plans have been approved.Subhash Gupta, president of Rail Yatri Parishad, said, “There is a need to decongest Mumbai’s railway stations, especially the smaller ones. The railways should also do something to clear obstructions outside stations to allow people to enter and exit them easily.”

Motorman Nawal Kishore Meena had to apply emergency brakes as some of the gravy entered his eyes; those responsible yet to be identified.Around 9.20 pm Saturday, motorman Nawal Kishore Meena was piloting a Belapur-bound local train and had just gone past Govandi station when a half-opened packet of paneer butter masala powder hit him in the face. Some of the powder from the packet flung by unidentified miscreants entered the motorman’s eye, forcing him to apply emergency brakes. After washing his eyes on the spot, using water from the bottle he was carrying, and receiving help at the next station (Mankhurd), Meena was able to complete the journey but the incident has left him shaken.Meena’s ordeal is similar to another Central Railway motorman, Laxman Singh, who was piloting a Titwala-bound train when miscreants threw chilli powder in the motorman’s cabin. Like Meena, Singh too managed to complete the journey (‘Motorman drives...

on 18-km despite chilli powder in his eyes’, MM, February 18).Meena told Mumbai Mirror that those indulging in such stupidity were putting thousands of lives at risk. “Who’ll be responsible if a motorman attacked in such a manner misses a signal? In my case, because of the intensity of pain in the eyes, I thought I had become a victim of acid attack. I applied emergency brakes and ducked under anticipating more attacks,” he said.Meena informed the control room about the incident and proceeded to the next station where the station master was waiting with a jug of cold water. After completing the journey, he was sent to hospital in Panvel where doctors recommended a two-day rest. He resumed work yesterday. The Railway Protection Force has begun scanning footage from the CCTV cameras around the spot even as a few people claiming to be eyewitnesses told the police about the presence of a man at the end of the Govandi platform, towards Mankhurd, who could have thrown the packet at the motorman.Inspector Sanjay Verman (RPF, incharge Mankhurd post) said a sketch was being created of the suspect based on eye-witness accounts and CCTV footage.

The Vashi Government Railway Police (GRP) has detained a man who is suspected to have molested two Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) students in a local train on September 11.
The police had been going through closed-circuit television footage from various railway stations on the Harbour Line to trace the accused. They were able to finally nab the suspect on Wednesday night.
“Since the incident took place in a moving train between Vashi and Govandi, we did not have CCTV images. We had been looking for footage from where he

boarded or alighted, to get further clues,” Police Inspector Nandakishore Saste, from the Vashi GRP, said.
Refusing to reveal details about the suspect, Mr. Saste said they will arrest the accused after confirming he is the one who molested the women. According to police, the incident took place on the evening September 11 when the two students were returning from field work in Rabale. They boarded a Harbour train from Rabale to Vashi and took another train from Vashi to Govandi when a man allegedly groped one of them and flashed the other, while touching her inappropriately.
Mr. Saste said, “The complainant belongs to Manipur while her friend is here from Europe as an exchange student. On alighting at Govandi, when the complainant described her ordeal to a friend, she said she too had faced molestation on a local train. One of them wrote about it on social media after which we got in touch with the women and asked them to register a first information report. They registered the case on Monday night.”
The complainant had managed to click the picture of the alleged molester and posted it on social media. She had also written about the other commuters who chose to remain silent spectators.

After Video of Cloth Wrapping on Rail Goes Viral, Railways Clarifies
Mumbai, Jul 11: After a video of railway employees “tying” a fractured piece of track with a cloth surfaced, Central Railway clarified that the cloth was only used as a marker.  Railway official said, “Fish plate was intact with tight bolts. Train passed in presence of Permanent Way official at restricted speed. Cloth was not put to bridge gap, but to mark for the replacement since paint doesn’t stick in rain.”

Samir Jhaveri, an RTI and passenger rights activist, however, demanded an inquiry by the Commissioner of Railway Safety into the matter.
Services on all three lines of the suburban railway in Mumbai — Western, Central and Harbour — were severely hit by torrential rains today.
Heavy rainfall lashed Mumbai and its adjoining areas on Tuesday. Local trains, considered the lifeline of Mumbai, are moving at the restricted speed due to water-logging of the tracks.
Around 2,000 passengers of two Mumbai-bound long-distance trains that got stuck between Nallasopara and Vasai stations of Western Railway on Tuesday due to water-logging of tracks had a harrowing time before they were rescued in a joint operation by the NDRF and police.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rains for Thursday. Mumbai has been put on a high alert.
