HUBBALLI: Trains blowing their horns at night have become a nightmare for residents who stay adjacent to the track on the 20km stretch between Hubballi and Dharwad. They complain of disturbed sleep and some miscreants allegedly used the horn noise to pull off a recent robbery and murder of a senior citizen in Raj Nagar. The stretch involves major hospitals like KIMS, SDM and residential areas like Deshpande Nagar, Keshwapur, Ashok Nagar, Raj Nagar, Shirdi Nagar, Unkal, Om Nagar, Sai Nagar, Amargol, Navanagar, Rayapur, Sattur, Navalur, Tejaswi Nagar and adjacent areas.Dentist Dr Ramesh Nadiger, a resident of Raj Nagar, said blowing of horns was stepped up three years ago after four persons and students were run over by speeding trains between Unkal and Hubballi stations. “When loco pilots blow the train horn even during the day, we can’t speak to the person sitting with us. While it’s at least acceptable during the...

day, why should they blow it for longer periods at night? Even goods trains, which move slowly, blow their horn repeatedly. The railways should take the plight of residents into consideration,” he said.Former MLA Veerabhadrappa Halaharavi, who stays at Deshpande Nagar and just a few feet from the track, said, “When trains stop at the outer signal, loco pilots start blowing the horn. They should use walkie-talkies to communicate their colleagues. Blowing the horn while resuming the journey and to alert passengers and passersby is acceptable,” he said.Manoj Hangal, another resident of Deshpande Nagar, said though a wall has been constructed along the track near his area to prevent pedestrians from walking on it, blowing of horns has not reduced. Dilip Kumar Sharma, a medical equipment businessman, said he often arrives by the Nizamuddin Express from Delhi. “The train stops for over 30 minutes at Unkal station early in the morning. Many loco pilots blow the horn unnecessarily,” he said.‘Alerting road users’* When a train recently passed by Raj Nagar between 3am and 3.30am, robbers broke the window of the house of a senior citizen and no one heard the sound of glass breaking. Miscreants often take due advantage of trains’ horn to commit crimes.Jagadish Hanchinal | police inspector, Ashok Nagar station, Hubballi* Only running trains blow the horn to alert road users at level crossings. Loco pilots are being counselled to keep the noise in residential areas to the bare minimum required.E Vijaya | deputy general manager, SWR, Hubballi

Only solution seems for this is build a boundary wall/fence to prevent trespassers. That will also prevent encroachments on railways' land.

If 1 or 2 LPs does this, you can consider as not necessary. But if all LPs does, then certainly it's a rule by railways. You cant complain to the safety standards adopted by IR.
