Railway line to Kodagu district back on track as SWR awards FLO to Bengaluru firm
The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,650 crore
Mysuru: The South Western Railways (SWR) has awarded tender for final location survey (FLO) to a Bengaluru-based firm for a new railway line from Mysuru to Kushalnagar in Kodagu district for Rs 1.26 crore. The proposed line is 88 km long.
According

to SWR officials, the tender was invited for the first time in December 2020, but it was rejected as it did not meet eligibility criteria. A fresh tender was floated in June and a Bangalore company bagged the contract. The survey work is expected to begin by September first week and the FLO report will be submitted within six months.
This proposed railway line will connect Mysuru to Kodagu which is the only district in the State without A railway connectivity.
It is decades old dream of the people of the district to have a railway connectivity as lakhs of tourists visit it every year. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,650 crore 50 percent of which will be borne by the state government.
The promise to build the new railway line was made in 2009 by the then Union railway state minister K H Muniyappa. However, the railways dropped the project as it was found economically unviable.
Kodagu-Mysuru parliament member Prathap Simha vowed in 2014 to fulfil the dream of the people in the district and he even declared in an interview to a TV channel that he would not contest in the next election if he failed to keep his word. However, Simha contested in the 2019 parliament election though the project was not sanctioned officially, saying that the railway line work was under process.
Kodagu district produces more than 30 percent of coffee in India and 70 percent of which is exported. The railway line reduces the transport cost of coffee and other spices produced in the district like cardamom, pepper, etc., to the Cochin port. The line also will reduce travelling cost of people to Mysuru and Bengaluru and other States.

MYSURU/MADIKERI: Seeing red over the proposed four-lane national highway between Mysuru and Madikeri, environmentalists, citizen groups and Kodagu residents have decided to stage a massive protest against the project, pointing to the irreversible damage it could cause to the environment. President of Save Kodagu and Cauvery campaign Rajiv Bopaiah said that a massive rally had been planned at Gandhi Maidan in Madikeri on Saturday to express the locals’ opposition to the project.Stating that the highway project, coupled with the two railway lines that were planned to connect Kodagu with the rest of the state, would result in the loss of a whopping four lakh trees in the district, Bopaiah said, “These projects are estimated to cost Rs 10,000 crore. If they are implemented, hundreds of families will be displaced, and the damage to the environment in the region will be irreparable.”Expressing fears of such depredations on the environment having on the...

rainfall pattern, Bopaiah said that this would adversely impact agricultural activity in the district, since it would affect coffee, black pepper and cardamom cultivation. “The people of Kodagu are already living in fear of landslides and floods. What is worse, the quality of water of Cauvery and Lakshmana Teertha is deteriorating because of various reasons. If we allow the authorities to cut trees for construction of the highway, we would be inviting nature’s wrath in the future,” he said.Pointing out that the traffic density on Mysuru-Madikeri road did not meet the criterion to justify its expansion to a four-lane highway, Bopaiah said, “For the road to be turned to a four-lane highway, the traffic volume on the road must be 10,000 vehicles per day, whereas it is just 2,000. The government is taking up this project because of pressure from politicians, who own vast tracts of land in the region, and timber mafia.”He added that the government must focus on ensuring connectivity to the rural parts of the district instead of thinking of huge infrastructure projects that posed serious threats to the ecological balance of the district.‘Projects will only harm Kodagu’Members of Coorg Wildlife Society will also be a part of the protest scheduled on Saturday. President of the outfit Colonel (Retired) CP Muthanna opined that the Rs 10,000 crore-fund that the infrastructure projects were estimated to cost could better be utilised to develop the entirety of the Malnad region in a sustainable manner. “The government is not willing to shed just Rs 1,000 crore to help the distressed people of Kodagu, when we were reeling under floods but spending such an extravagant sum on projects that will harm, and not benefit, the people of the district. Kodagu does not need railways and national highways,” said Col Muthanna.Cauvery Sena convener Ravi Chengappa said that they had filed a petition in the court opposing the railway and national highway projects. “The rally held on Saturday will start at Thimmaiah Grounds at 10am and end at Gandhi Maidan. If the chief minister’s visit to Madikeri on Saturday is confirmed, we will hold the protest at Thimmaiah Grounds, and submit a memorandum to him,” said Chengappa.

The detailed project report (DPR) on a new railway terminal at Naganahalli, entailing the creation of additional infrastructure for Mysuru, will be submitted to the Railway Board in November.
This was stated at a division-level meeting of railway officials with MPs within the jurisdiction of Mysuru railway division on Tuesday.
The project is of special importance to Mysuru city as the existing railway station is saturated and cannot handle the projected growth of traffic envisaged consequent to the completion of track doubling and electrification work. The project was approved in the

last budget and is estimated to cost ₹789 crore.
The details were given in response to a query by Pratap Simha, MP for Mysuru.
The construction wing of the Railways is working on the DPR, which is expected to be finalised by November. “The project requires around 400 acres of land, for which the State government has been sounded off, and it will take three years to be fully operational from the date of commencement,” said South Western Railway general manager A.K. Gupta.
The terminal will include stabling lines, maintenance lines at least six platform lines, besides high-level island platforms and other infrastructure required for operating both inbound and outbound services as a station of origin.
New railway line
Meanwhile, MP for Chamarajanagar R. Dhruvanarayana sought to know the fate of the proposed Hejjala-Chamarajanagar railway line, which has been approved by the Railway Board to provide an alternative route to that town via Kanakapura-Malavalli and Kollegal.
Officials pointed out that the progress of the project hinges on land acquisition by the State government. The 140-km line will pass through new terrain not connected by the Railways, but the cost of land acquisition has been pegged at around ₹500 crore.
The project is to be taken up on a cost-sharing basis, with the State pitching in with 50% of the estimated cost of ₹1,300 crore, in addition to providing land to the Railways. Mr. Dhruvanarayan said a one-time lump sum release of funds towards land acquisition may be prohibitive for the State government. He said he would try to push for land acquisition in a phased manner.
But if the current pace of progress is any indication, it is likely the project will remain on paper, according to sources in the Railways.
The Railways will also study the feasibility of extending the existing DEMU service from Bengaluru to Ramanagaram, up to Mysuru so as to meet the demand for additional services.
A project to establish a zonal RPF training centre at K.R. Nagar is also in the pipeline, and land has been identified for it.

Pune is also most saturated one now so they demanding to upgrade shivajinagar and hadapsar as new terminals for that they extended habibganj pune train up to hubli later to dharwad u might know that. And also interesting is pune also handle local trains with just 6 Platforms with other trains.

Not CR it's Railway board need to sanction funds and work for such things but han CR been late to demand new terminal for pune city but then too I appreciate their way of controlling trains at pune both long distance passing, originating and local trains their and yup pune really need bigger terminal for present and future estimated traffic.

Also they could have easily speeded up YPR-BKN Biweekly exp and YPR-Harihar-YPR exp. YPR- HRR exp has too low patronage due to bad timings and too much travel time.

Change in time of 56205 (NTW - MYS Passenger) is a disappointment. 56025 was acting as a connecting train to 12613 (Tippu Express to SBC, which departs @ 11:15 AM). Now, we have 5 minutes gap between arrival of 56205 and departure of 12613......
