The Central railway line is being expanded to make the journey easier for the passengers traveling from Panvel station on Harbour line to Karjat. According to reports, the work on new suburban corridor between Panvel and Karjat has not yet gained momentum and the commuters will have to wait for at least another four years for this. The actual work on the new Panvel to Karjat dual carriageway under MUTP-3 will start within a month.
The officials have said that the work on this route is likely to be completed by 2024. Currently, Panvel to Karjat is used for long distance trains or freight.

cost of Mumbai Railway Development Corporation's (MRVC) MUTP-3 projects is INR 10,947 crores, of which INR 2,782 crores is expected to be the cost for Panvel to Karjat corridor. The project was approved in December 2016 but it could not go ahead due to difficulties in funding, tender and land acquisition. Besides, several crucial railway projects of the city under MUTP-3 faced financial hurdles, including third and fourth lines between Virar and Dahanu, new suburban link between Airoli and Kalwa and trespass control on mid-section were cleared on Monday.
It was decided to appoint a consultant to implement the Panvel to Karjat suburban dual carriageway project. The tenders were approved in May 2019. Now that its detailed project report has been submitted, survey and other works, which are left would be completed in a month and then the work would actually start.
Work on the interim project was halted due to lockdown implemented in the wake of COVID-19, but it has now been resumed. It will take four years to build a double suburban road. An elevated line will be constructed from the existing line at Panvel and this new line will come down after some distance. A small elevated bridge will also be constructed for this purpose. Similar work will be done at Karjat station.

This dual carriage way will be of great benefit to the citizens living between Panvel and Karjat. The train will halt at five stations namely Panvel, Chowk, Mohape, Chikhale, Karjat. The double track was expected to take place in 2022, but now it will be further delayed.

Central Railway’s Hill Gangs of the Bhor Ghat (between Karjat and Khandala) and Thul Ghat (between Kasara and Igatpuri) climb the high and steep mountains along the tracks and through rappelling identify the loose and vulnerable boulders and mark it with red paint throughout the month of January to March every year. Then, in the month of April and May they drop the loose and vulnerable boulders marked by taking a block of 4 to 5 hours each day. These boulders are then cleared through a boulder special run especially for this purpose. This year alone more than 650 loose boulders were identified and dropped both in Bhor ghat and Thul ghat and the same were cleared by a 3-wagon boulder special train by taking a block for 4-5 hours for 60 days, informed said Shivaji Sutar, chief public relations officer of the CR.These safety soldiers work throughout the year in...

ensuring a smooth and safe passage to the trains towards Pune and southern parts of India and towards Nashik and northern parts of India. These hill gang members through their expertise in mountain rappelling, remove loose and dangerous boulders likely to fall on tracks, clear the mud likely to cause landslides, clear the chock up of catch water draining etc. to avert any unusual likely to be caused especially during monsoon. "This ambitious and awe-inspiring task has been fulfilled by 10 hill gang members each in Bhor ghat and in Thul ghat. To fulfill this task the safety gears and instruments provided were safety helmet, safety shoes, safety belt (harness), binocular, 100 metre rope, hand gloves, safety jacket, katavni, pahar, fonk, red paint, brush, first aid box, ghan 5 kg, hammer different sizes, crow bar, whistle thunderer, chisel, axe in different sizes, wire claw, hand signal flag Red/Green, shovel, jam bavata and ghamela. During the monsoon and thereafter the hill gang members do the work of scanning for scattered loose boulders and dropping as per requirement, clean the chock-up catch water drain and culverts, lean tree cutting and bridge cleaning," Sutar said. Untitled Carousel Central Railway to take strict action against those violating social distancing normsThe Central Railways has decided to take strict action against those who violate social distancing norms at platforms and while boarding and getting off trains. The principal hill range of the Western Ghats of Maharashtra is the Sahyadri range, there are a number of passes or ‘Ghats’ in this range, notable among them being the Bhor Ghat and the Thul ghat. It was through these ghats that the rail line from Mumbai cut through the range and reached Pune and Nashik respectively."Traversing through these Ghats poses a great challenge to both Roadways and Railways. The steep gradient rail line through these Ghats pose a unique challenge to Central Railway, Moreover, during heavy rains erosions of steep slopes takes place which gives way to heavy boulders to roll down and small boulders loosen up. The big Boulders are cut into pieces by the hill gangs with the help of chisels and hammers and cleared, while small boulders are dropped to ensure the safe running of trains," Sutar said. For many rock climbers, mountain rappelling is an adventure, but for these hill gangs of the Central Railway this is a mission performed to ensure the safety of railways. These all-weather railwaymen toil, sweat in a very difficult terrain so that the trains pass through these Ghats are protected from any unusual. The challenge is on every year after year for the hill gang of Central Railway.

The restoration work of the up-line (Pune to Mumbai) is underway at the Bhor Ghat section on Pune-Mumbai railway route, due to which two trains have been cancelled and five others diverted since October 3. To provide a long-lasting solution to this rail traffic congestion in the ghat section, the central railway has initiated a project for installing a fourth railway line.
Three rail lines already exist: up line, middle line and down line in the ghat section. Once the fourth line is operational, it will give relief to rail traffic enabling more trains to run daily through the ghats, said railway officials.

Sutar, Central Railway’s spokesperson said, “Daily, on an average, 74 trains pass through this Bhor ghat section and we have to monitor the operations very closely as it is a crucial stretch between Pune and Mumbai. So we decided to have a fourth line in the ghat section which is under conceptualization. Experts and senior officials have been working on it.”
Similarly the Central Railway has identified 4 to 5 risky spots in the ghat section with regular landslides and falling boulders during the monsoon. Small tunnels have been planned as a permanent solution to this.
“There are some spots which we have identified which are open and landslides happens here quite often. It creates problems to our train operations, then trains get delayed and entire Ghat section is affected. So we have plans to build small tunnels at these 4 to 5 spots and this work is at the primary stage. Senior officials are into discussions and hopefully this project will start soon.” added Sutar.
