Hyderabad: In an attempt to decongest the Secunderabad railway station in the city, South Central Railway (SCR) is aiming to provide
for express
at Malkajgiri, Lingampally, Begumpet, Falaknuma, and Bolarum. With more than 229 trains running from the Secunderabad railway station, it sees an average daily footfall of 1.8 lakh passengers. According to
, the Secunderabad station has met its capacity with 10 platforms and there is no scope of expanding the physical infrastructure of the station given the area it is established in.
"We are aiming at developing different stations across the city as terminal stations to be able to disperse the passenger rush to other stations.
Passengers have long been demanding that more express trains halt at Malkajgiri station due to tremendous increase in the number of passengers in the belt.
"Malkajgiri railway station already sees more than 3,500 passengers on an average per day. During discussions with authorities it has been acknowledged that if more trains halt here, the numbers will increase radically," said a member of Suburban Train and Bus Travellers Association.
"A number of passengers from the area have to board their trains from either Kacheguda or Secunderabad for the lack of an option," he added.
To address the issue, SCR is now providing halts for ten express trains at Malkajgiri and around 20 express trains pass through it.
"We are also aiming at completing the development of Cherlapally station into a satellite terminal at a cost of Rs 221 crore within the next three years, the development works have begun," an SCR official told TOI, adding that the move should help in catering to the need of rail users from the outskirts of the city.
Due to land hurdles, a six platform terminal station will be developed which should help with the running of MMTS trains across the routes, informed railway officials.
With the fast expansion of the city along Gachibowli and Patancheru, Serilingampally has also emerged as an important station for the passengers in the suburbs.
"Serilingampally sees an average of 25, 000 passengers per day and around 100 trains including MMTS, passenger, express and other long-distance trains run through it," said the SCR official.
To cater to the passengers in western parts of the city, SCR is also extending the facilities in Lingampally as a terminal station where at present 40,000 passengers commute through it per day.
"An impressive number of 108 MMTS trains, 14 pairs of express and mail trains along with eight pairs of passenger trains halt at the station," a senior railway official told TOI.
"We are using the MMTS station as a rail transit hub to decongest the busy terminals like Secunderabad, Kacheguda and Hyderabad. We will soon be linking with the station in the future by extension of trains or additional stoppages," he added saying that the move will help see an additional 20,000 passengers daily.

The Malkajgiri railway station caters to 3,500 passengers a day.Nagara GopalNagara Gopal
Once a sleepy suburb, the now bustling Malkajgiri with many residential colonies around it is home to retired public sector employees, a good number of them from the railways, and several private company employees.
Roads are poor, and though Secunderabad is less than 10 minutes away on a train from its station, rail connectivity is not adequate even though it has received a facelift of late.

South Central Railway (SCR) deciding to decongest Secunderabad station and move a few trains to Lingampalli to cater to the fast expanding west side of the city, demand to accord Malkajgiri station a similar status or at least make it a key one for people of east and north is growing louder. “Malkajgiri was once considered a terminal station but was abandoned for unknown reasons. If more trains halt here, it will help scores of passengers as they need not travel to Secunderabad or Kacheguda,” says Hari Chandrasekhar, a resident.
The station already caters to 3,500 passengers a day, and senior railway officials do accept that if more trains halt here, the numbers will show a dramatic increase because many passengers are forced to get in at Secunderabad and Kacheguda.
Noor, general secretary, Suburban Train and Bus Travellers Association, says, “It is time SCR ensures Devagiri and Ajanta Express trains start from Kacheguda, while Bengaluru and Venkatdri Expresses are extended up to Secunderabad or Malkajgiri for the benefit of passengers.”
He has been relentlessly spearheading the cause of Malkajgiri for years and alludes to the fact that at one point of time, it had access to 45 local train trips, which have come down to four since 1997 – two services in the morning and two in the evening.
“At least until the MMTS phase two operations begin when we are expected to have connectivity to Medchal, Bolarum, Manoharabad, etc., we need more express halts as there are no proper connecting trains to Secunderabad and Kacheguda from where many east and south bound trains move,” reasons Mr. Noor.
He also suggests that current suburban services be run from Manoharabad, Medchal and Bolarum to Secunderabad instead of sending them up to Falaknuma, since there are already MMTS phase one trains on this section.
SCR officials say halts were given to five express trains and similar plans are in the pipeline. “We have improved passenger amenities at Malkajgiri station with access from both sides, new platform, reservation counter and signages. Once MMTS phase two begins more services will be added,” says SCR official spokesperson M. Umashankar Kumar.
Yet, the station urgently needs a new foot over-bridge as the existing one is narrow and decades old; another platform in addition to the existing three along with maintenance lines catering to increasing train and passenger traffic in the years to come, what with new railway lines towards Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak and others getting ready.
If more trains halt at Malkajgiri, it will help scores of passengers as they need not travel to Secunderabad or Kacheguda.
