Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL) that facilitates operation of trains on the West Coast between Thokur (near Mangaluru) and Kolad in Maharashtra has geared up to ensure safe passage of trains during the monsoon.
Fighting the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the corporation has undertaken all pre-monsoon civil works across its 740-km network to maintain track and passenger amenities.
Special attention has been given to catchwater drain cleaning and inspection of cuttings. KRCL in a release here said that the large-scale geo-safety works executed in the past few years have significantly

reduced incidences of boulder fall and soil slip affecting movement of trains. No major disruption in services has occurred in the last eight years due to boulder fall during monsoon.
Personnel deployed
The corporation has deployed 681 personnel for patrolling tracks and installations during the monsoon, while vulnerable locations will be under watch constantly.
Besides imposing speed restrictions at locations vulnerable to landslip and boulder fall, BRN-mounted earthmovers are kept ready at nominated points.
Reduced speeds
KRCL has asked loco pilots to run trains at reduced speeds of 40 kmph during low visibility.
Accident relief medical vans with operation theatres and emergency medical aid have been kept ready at Ratnagiri and Verna. An accident relief train is also kept ready at Verna, Goa.
Emergency communication sockets are provided at almost every kilometre of the track to enable patrolmen as well as crew to contact station masters and control room. All main signal aspects are now equipped with LEDs for improved visibility.
Self-recording rain gauges at nine stations, flood warning system on three bridges that frequently witness flash floods and anemometers at four locations to gauge wind speed are among the other safety measures taken by KRCL.
Monsoon timetable wherein trains run at reduced speeds will be effective on the Konkan route between June 10 and October 31.

The work on the RuB is taken up under Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL)
The long-pending demand of the construction of the road underbridge (RuB) at Jeppu Mahakalipadpu railway-level crossing became a reality with Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel laying foundation stone for the same on Sunday.
The work on the RuB is taken up under Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL). The Mahakalipadpu Road is the main thoroughfare towards the southern parts of the city as well as Kerala -- on NH 66 -- and witnesses heavy traffic movement.

level crossing gate at Mahakalipadpu on Mangaluru-Ullal railway line, which gets frequently closed to allow train movement, hinders traffic movement. Further, the road is narrow and traffic congestion on the stretch is normal.
The RuB will reduce the distance between the National Highway 66 bypass and Mangaluru city. The RuB, to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 49.95 crore, is expected to complete within 12 months (excluding monsoon).
The MP also initiated the work on an approach road that will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 19.87 crore.
Kateel said that the RuB project was delayed due to litigation in High Court. “After several deliberations with the Southern Railway, the work on the RuB was approved. The MSCL has already paid Rs 30.07 crore to the Railways and the work will be executed by the Southern Railway through Mangaluru-based Mugrodi Constructions. A sum of Rs 19 crore will be sanctioned for the development of the approach road from the MPLAD fund,” the MP said.
Mangalore South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said that the project including RuB and an approach road requires 20 acres of land to be acquired.
Out of 20 landowners, 18 have already agreed to hand over the land and we will convince others too. Thukaram Shetty, a land owner, has agreed to hand over 25 cents of his land for the project, Kamath said.
The MP, MLA and Mayor Premananda Shetty felicitated Thukaram Shetty for handing over 25 cents of land.
On the project
Two four-lane RuBs will be constructed across Ullal – Mangaluru Junction and Ullal – Mangaluru Central railway lines.
The RuBs that connect the National Highway 66 from Jappinamogaru to business areas of Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Hampankatta and Bunder will reduce traffic congestion on the stretch.
At present, the road is 4.5 to 6 metres in width on the stretch. Under the new project, the road will be converted into a four-lane concrete stretch of 18-metre width with median, streetlights and stormwater drains.
The RuB will be nine-metre wide and 5.209-metre in height.

The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 6.76 crore
Work on the construction of a new pit line (washing line), with a capacity to hold 24 coaches, is in full swing at the coaching yard in Mangaluru Central Railway Station.
The new pit line is constructed in lieu of the existing 18 coach pit line to facilitate the construction of new platforms No 4 and 5 and also enable the station to handle more trains.

K Gopinath, Public Relations Officer, Southern Railway, Palakkad Division, said that pit lines are the main infrastructure required for conducting primary maintenance of coaches of both express and passenger trains.
“The pit line will have the facilities for day/night inspection, coach cleaning, coach charging, watering, among others. The catwalks on both sides of the pit line help in easy access into the coaches which makes maintenance and cleaning work easy. After every scheduled trip, under gear examination, checking of the braking system, electrical maintenance, cleaning, washing both exterior and interior, checking the amenity fittings, watering of coaches are done at the pit lines,” he said.
After this, coaches are given “fit for 96 hours (4 days) run” from the carriage depot. Draining out the water tanks and maintenance of bio-toilets are also carried out at the pit line at regular intervals.
In addition to the trip attentions, monthly schedules and tri-monthly schedules are also carried out at the pit lines. Other than the trip attentions and scheduled maintenance, after 9 months of service, coaches will be sent for intermediate overhauling (IOH).
Full length pit line
After 18 months, Periodic Over Hauling (POH) of the coaches will be carried out. The new pit line at Mangaluru Central is being constructed on the eastern side of the coaching yard. The 596 metre length pit will have a capacity to handle a train rake of 24 LHB coaches / 26 ICF make coaches.
The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 6.76 crore.
Demolition of the existing 18 coach pit line and skewing of the track is part of the project, he said. A rake requires an average of 8 hours for maintenance at the pit line. The new 24 coach pit line being constructed in lieu of the existing 18 coach pit line will be suitable for maintenance of all coaching rakes.
