The newly opened rail heritage gully at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has given 48 trees a new lease of life as these have been transplanted from the sites of various infrastructure projects underway in the city. Details of the trees are mentioned on plates.
Sources said that they want to ensure that the trees are properly taken care of and that the Central Railway's horticulture department is looking after it.
These trees adorn the beautiful heritage gully that displays at least seven rail artefacts used during the British era under the Great

Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR).
"More such trees which have been cut will be implanted not just in the heritage lane but also in areas where we have space. We are planning to implant more trees in Lokmanya Tilak Terminus as well," said DK Sharma, General Manager, Central Railway.
The Central Railway, on the occasion of World Heritage Day on Wednesday, opened its first heritage lane at CSMT on the P'D Mello entrance.

India’s first passenger train was flagged off on 16 April, 165 years ago.
An estimated 400 people took the inaugural journey from Bori Bunder (now CST) to Tannah (now Thane). Merchant Sir Jamserjee Jeejeebhoy and then governor’s wife Lady Falkland joined the other passengers – people from various ranks of British and Indian aristocracy – who filled the 14 carriages.
An article in India Today reports that the train, which ran on three locomotives, imaginatively referred to as Sahib, Sindh and Sultan, left the station at exactly 3.30 pm, amid a 21-gun salute.

Travel writers Anurag Mallick and Priya Ganapathy retrace the route in a blogpost as follows:
The 21-mile long journey to Tannah (Thane), was completed in approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
After leaving Bori Bunder, the train first stopped at Bycullah and then later for fifteen minutes at Sion, to fill water into the engines. The current CST-Thane train follows the same route.
A newspaper report of the time described the journey as follows:
The natives salaamed the omnipotence of the steam engine as it passed. The railway is a triumph, to which, in comparison, all our victories in the East seem tame and commonplace. The opening of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway will be remembered by the natives of India when the battlefields of Plassey, Assaye, Meanee and Goojerat have become landmarks of history.
A report in The Overland Telegraph and Courier
The first passenger train ran from Bori Bunder (CST) to Tannah (Thane) on 16 April, 1853.

The success of India’s first passenger train, as it reached Tannah (Thane) a little over an hour after it was flagged off from Bori Bunder (CST), made way for the rise of Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) and East Indian Railway (EIR). Following the journey, the period between 1853-1854 saw the establishment of two companies which pioneered the railway construction in the country.
About 400 passengers, many of them marking the creme da la creme of colonial India, boarded the train
While history remembers 1853 as the year when the Indian Railways was formally launched, the British began to experiment in this sector in 1836 – when the first (British) Indian rail line came up near Chintadripet Bridge, near Chennai, reports India Today.
November 1852 also saw a trial run along the same route of Bori Bunder (CST) to Tannah (Thane). But since it was done with a shunting locomotive instead of a rail engine, it is 1853 that will be remembered as the start of the golden era of the Indian railways.

The work on the country's first high speed bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is on in full swing with the designing of bridges and tunnels progressing well, a senior official has said.
.
The train would cover the distance of over 500 km between the two cities in less than three hours, from the present seven hours.
.
The

train will halt at 12 stations, out of which four fall in Maharashtra.
.
The proposed corridor will start from the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and end near the Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad.
.
Stops and route plan
2/6
The plan is to run three trains during peak hours and two trains in the non-peak hours.
.
There will be two types of train operations. A few trains will have limited stops while others will stop at all the stations between Mumbai (BKC) and Sabarmati.
.
There will total 70 trips each day (35 in each direction) between the two stations and according to our estimates, our ridership will be 40,000 passengers per day.
.
Land acquisition
3/6
The works of surveying the route and soil testing are underway, Khare said. The preliminary work of acquiring land in both the states has also begun.
The route passes through 108 villages of Maharashtra. A majority of these villages fall in Palghar district. National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC) have issued a notice to acquire land in 17 villages and informed the land owners about it.
Those who give their land will be compensated over and above the current prevailing market rates. Those who do not turn up, their lands will be acquired under section 19 of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013, he said.
.
Features of the project
4/6
The entire project will be fire and earthquake resistant. Seismometers (a ground motion detection centre) will be installed in the earthquake susceptible areas while the wind monitor systems will also be put up. There will be a seven kilometer stretch after Thane creek towards Virar which will go under the sea.
.
Speed of the trains
5/6
The train will attain the maximum speed of 320 km/hr in 320 seconds and by this time, it would have covered a distance of to 18 km. Passengers will reach from BKC in Mumbai to the neighbouring Thane in just 10 minutes and to Virar in Palghar district in 24 minutes.
.
Features of the train
6/6
The 10-car train will have a business class and nine cars of the standard class and after 2033, the trains will have 16 cars. The business class coach will have leg rests, luggage space and staff rooms including refrigerators, boiling water, tea maker, coffee maker and hand towel warmers.
.
Besides, there will be separate washrooms for women, men and specially-abled passengers. There will also be a separate coach for feeding mothers or sick persons, which will have a folding bed, baggage rack and mirrors. The seats can be rotated in the direction in which the train is moving.
