The suburban railway project would make travelling in the city and its suburbs, including to the international airport easier
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday inspected the progress of the ambitious suburban railway project here. The CM travelled from Bengaluru Cantonment to Heelalige in an inspection car to review the project as well as the doubling of the railway line.
Later, speaking to reporters he said the suburban railway project would make travelling in the city and its suburbs, including to the international airport easier.
"It

will also help reduce traffic congestion in the city. Similarly, the railway doubling project will help in the operation of more trains from Bengaluru," he said. Yediyurappa said the Bengaluru suburban railway project is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 15,767 crore.

The expenditure would be borne by the state, Centre and external funding at a ratio of 20:20:60, the Chief Minister noted.
The state government has released Rs 400 crores for the project in 2020-21. He explained that the project is being executed by K- RIDE, the Joint Venture of Government of Karnataka and Ministry of Railways. According to officials, the suburban project comprises four corridors with a route length of 148 kms. The routes are Bengaluru City Railway Station to Devanahalli (41.40 Km), Byappanahalli to Chikkabanavara (covering a distance of 25 Km), Kengeri to Whitefield (35.52 Km); and Heelalige (Chandapura) to Rajankunte (46.24 Km).
The single line between Yeshwantpur to Channasandra section and Byappanahalli to Hosur was a major constraint for operating more trains from Bengaluru to its outskirts, they said.
Therefore these two railway line doubling projects were sanctioned in 2018-19 with 50-50 cost sharing between Government of Karnataka and Ministry of Railways.

K-RIDE claims that work on the four corridors will be completed within six years.  | Photo Credit: File Photo
If all goes as planned, suburban rail commuters will be able to use Namma Metro and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses with ease. The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd. (K-RIDE) wants to integrate the proposed suburban rail stations with metro and existing railway stations as well as BMTC bus stops at 10 locations on the four planned corridors.
“Discussions are on with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. and other authorities,”

said a senior K-Ride official. The four corridors are KSR Bengaluru City to Devanahalli, Byappanahalli to Chikkabanavara, Kengeri to Whitefield, and Heelalige to Rajanakunte.
The final feasibility report on the suburban rail project also talks about integrating metro stations at KSR Bengaluru, Cantonment (yet to come up), Kengeri, and others. For example, at KSR Bengaluru, K–RIDE proposes to build an elevated station with two side platforms and one island platform. It will be an interchange station as two suburban rail corridors — Bangalore City to Rajanakunte and Kengeri to Whitefield — intersect there. The report also talks about connecting the existing metro station and KSR Bengaluru City railway station.
The 148.17-km suburban rail network project continues to face many challenges, the most recent one being the second wave of COVID-19. Even preliminary work has taken a hit. K-RIDE had prioritised construction of Byappanahalli Terminal – Chikkabanavara and Heelalige – Rajanakunte corridors.
“Much of the preliminary work on these two corridors has been affected because of the second wave of COVID-19. Work on the doubling of Byappanahalli – Hosur line was also impacted due to issues with transportation of material and shortage of workers,” said the official.
Despite these hurdles, K-RIDE claims that all the four corridors will be completed within six years. Once operational, 9.84 lakh people will be able to use suburban train services every day, and officials estimate ridership will increase to 13.41 lakh by 2030.
K-RIDE has issued tenders for selecting a consultant for a detailed design and drawings for viaduct, stations, depot, track and signalling, etc. Two more tenders have also been floated for assessment of market value for land identified and structure to be acquired for the project and shifting utilities.
Extension of network
The final feasibility report on the project states that depending on the patronage, the corridors may be extended to cities in the neighbouring districts

a bid to restore four railways stations in Karnataka, which are considered to be heritage buildings, the Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway has entered an agreement with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). The deal to restore and preserve Doddajala, Devenahalli, Nandi Halt and Avathihalli Stations was sealed on Thursday, with a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The stations, which are on the KSR Bengaluru-Chikaballapur-Kolar Railway line will be restored in the first phase of the project.
Touted to be the region's oldest railway line, these stations are examples of colonial-style architecture amidst the picturesque stretch of the railway line, which was first operated in 1915.
“The memorandum seeks to restore and preserve Heritage Railway Stations at Doddajala, Devanahalli, Avatihalli and Nandi Halt based on different themes related to history and heritage,” read a statement by the South Western Railways.
It also stated that the works will be undertaken in two stages. In the first stage, INTACH will undertake the renovation, restoration and preservation of the station buildings in consultation with the Railways, as well as identify partners for funding the initiative under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wings of organisations. In the second phase, railway stations in Rajanukunte, Oorgaum, Champion and Chintamani will be developed as heritage railway stations.
The authorities are planning to develop an art, cultural and convention centre at the Doddajala station. At the Devanahalli station, an ‘interpretation centre’ for monuments and a café or snack counter will be developed as well. At Avathihalli, a silk museum and resource centre, along with a park, are planned. The Nandi Halt station will have a rail museum, café, restaurant, cultural performance centre, pop-up weekend craft markets and an amphitheatre.
Ashok Kumar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru hopes that such a display of the cultural and monumental heritage, besides development of infrastructure in and around the four heritage stations, sites will boost tourism. He also expressed the hope that post-restoration, these places will attract a slew of visitors.

As all 4 stations are in City to Airport line, there should be frequent trains for the benefit of visitors. You can not expect public to take cabs or buses to see these stations.

BENGALURU: The city’s much-awaited suburban rail project seems to be on the right track. Prime Minister
is likely to lay the foundation stone next month.
The Rs 15,657-crore project was cleared by the Centre in October 2020 but no formal announcement was made due to the model code of conduct. “We have sought a date from the Prime Minister’s Office for laying the foundation stone but haven’t received any confirmation till now,” said a source.
Officials

say the state government wants the foundation stone to be laid before the BBMP elections and also to operationalise a small section of one of the four corridors before the 2023 assembly polls.
Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), a joint venture between the railway ministry and the state government, is supposed to execute the project.
K-RIDE has recruited around 60 staffers so far and is planning to hire more in the next few months.
The government has appointed
(KIADB) as the nodal agency to acquire required land for the project. The 148km project will comprise four corridors: KSR Bengaluru City-Yelahanka-Devanahalli (41km), Byappanahalli-Yeshwantpur-Chikkabanavara (25km), Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield (35km) and Heelalige-Yelahanka-Rajanukunte (46km). Work on Byappanahalli-Yeshwantpur-Chikkabanavara and Heelalige-Yelahanka-Rajanukunte is likely to be taken up first.
An official said they are planning to float a tender for ‘station planning’ of 57 stations. “We have already floated tenders for land and geo-technical surveys. Notification for land acquisition will be issued soon. The idea of station planning involves designing stations as commercial hubs and improving integration of suburban rail with other modes. Tenders for civil work will be called by March. The project will be expedited once the PM lays the foundation stone,” said an official.
Inspired by Metro man E Sreedharan’s digital countdown clock in Metro offices, K-RIDE will install one to track the number of days left for the deadline. “We are planning to set up a countdown clock to remind officials to speed up work. We don’t have any competition with BMRCL but hope to make it better than Metro,” he said.

The Centre on Wednesday approved the Bengaluru suburban rail project, estimated to cost around Rs 19,000 crore, and fulfilled a long-pending demand of the IT city.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the 148-km-long project, which is aimed at decongesting Bengaluru, sources in the government told DH.
However, due to the model code of conduct in force for the Assembly byelections in Karnataka, the government deferred its announcement.
When
...

asked to elaborate on the project at the weekly Cabinet press briefing, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that due to the code of conduct, he can’t say anything on this issue.
According to the revised DPR, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be set up to implement the project and both the Railway Ministry and state government will have equity in it.
The Union government would provide 20% of the equity in the project and facilitate external financial assistance of up to 60% of the project cost. The Karnataka government will have to share the remaining 20% equity.
The suburban rail network will have four corridors: KSR Bengaluru City-Devanahalli, Byappanahalli-Chikkabanavara, Kengeri-Cantonment-Whitefield and Heelalige-Rajanukunte.
The revised project proposes 57 suburban railway stations covering a distance of 148.17 km. Besides dropping at least 24 stations from the original report, the revised DPR has also cut down the number of elevated stations from 31 to 22.
The suburban railway is likely to be fully operational around 2026 since approximately seven years are required for land acquisition and construction.
The suburban rail stations will integrate with at least 10 metro stations including Yeshwantpur, Kengeri, Cantonment, Whitefield, K R Puram, Baiyappanhalli, Jnanabharathi and Nayandahalli. The fare structure will be similar to that of the Metro rail, said sources.
With the suburban rail network providing seamless connectivity to all towns surrounding Bengaluru, it is expected that once it is complete, it would greatly help decongest Bengaluru,  which is facing severe traffic snarls, said an official in the Indian Railways.
