Kadapa: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will be visiting Krishnapatnam-Obulavaripalli railway line on August 24.

The Railway officials have announced the schedule of the tour. The security arrangements are monitored by Vijayawada Railway SP Narayan Naik.

Venkaiah Naidu will inspect the longest rail tunnels which are situated between Cherlopalli and Rapuru railway stations. The tunnels flow across Velikonda forest in the borders of Nellore and Kadapa districts.

On Wednesday, SP Narayan Naik has monitored and discussed with the officials over the security measures in the tunnels, which is about 7kms long.

Vice President is expected to start from Venkatachalam and will be reaching Cherlopalli railway station by 3 pm on Saturday. In this context, a large number of police personals were deployed along the entire route.

Secunderabad: South Central Railway (SCR) has recorded the highest ever freight loading of 122.6 million tonnes during the previous financial year 2018-19 and targets to achieve 128 million tonnes during the current financial year.
This was disclosed by Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR, during discussions with important freight customers to discuss the advantages of using the new line between Obulavaripalle and Krishnapatnam. Authorities from Krishnapatnam port, Jindal steel, representatives from various cement, power and fertilisers sector attended the meeting.

new line for discharging the cargo from the Krishnapatnam port to hinterland industrial areas of cement clusters located around Eraguntla area and Jindal Steel Plant near Bellary. Various customers like Jindal, Ultratech, expressed keen interest in taking maximum benefits from the new line. Jindal Steel informed that they had a plan in doubling the production of steel in next five years for which the new line will be very useful.
General Manager also reviewed the freight performance of Krishnapatnam port in the last year and freight performance of the zone during first quarter of this year. He expressed concern over the slow growth in freight loading in the first quarter and hope that the new line will give the much-needed boost to improve loading in the rest of the year.
K Siva Prasad, Principal Chief Operations Manager, SCR, John Prasad, Principal Chief Commercial Manager, SCR, P Sreenivas, Divisional Railway Manager, Vijayawada division, B Nagya, Chief Freight Traffic Manager, and others were present during the meeting.

New Delhi: South Central Railway has commissioned the longest electrified tunnel, measuring 6.6 Kms between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations and is part of the recently completed Obulavaripalli – Venkatachalam new railway line.
The tunnel has been completed in a record time of 43 months.
Two freight trains have successfully run on 25th June, 2019 marking the full-scale Operation of the newly built electrified railway line between the two stations, thereby opening up viable rail connectivity between Krishnapatnam Port and its hinterland for Goods train services, South Central Railway (SCR) said in a statement.

Completion of this tunnel has enabled Railways to start freight operations on this important railway line, which has reduced the distance between Krishnapatnam Port and hinterland areas by 60 kms. At present, the average travel time taken by goods train from Krishnapatnam Port to Obulavaripalli is 10 hrs. On the newly commissioned line, the travel time gets reduced to about 5 hours, which will result in a saving of travel time by 5 hours, it added.
The construction of this tunnel paved the way to operate freight trains in Obulavaripalli - Venkatachalam - Krishnapatnam Port new railway line for a distance of 113 Kms. The section is now notified for commercial freight operations as well.
Salient Features of Tunnel
Located between Cherlopalli to Rapuru stations and constructed in shape of ‘Horse Shoe’.
New Australian Tunneling Method(NATM) is used and the cost incurred is Rs.460 crores
Length of the tunnel is 6, 660 mts and is in straight alignment.
The height of tunnel (rail level to roof) is 6.5 meters and the minimum height of contact wire is maintained at 5.2 meters.
Ballast less Track is constructed with Bi-block sleepers and Vaslo fittings
Full length lining is provided with 300 mm thickness
Two nos. of traction power supply substations are provided near Cherlopalli and near Adurupalli with necessary switching stations in between.
OHE maintenance depot is provided at Rapuru along with tower-car shed.
LED lighting provided at 10 m intervals inside the tunnel
Conventional OHE has been provided with a maximum span of 36 m and maximum tension length of 1206 m. Brackets for supporting OHE have been fixed on wall mounted type plate fittings, which are fixed to the tunnel lining concrete.
Spring type Auto Tensioning Device (ATD) of South Korean make is adopted in place of conventional type ATD for maintaining necessary tension in OHE wires, for the first time in SCR.
Fail safe earthing arrangements are provided for safety of personnel working in tunnel.
This longest electrified tunnel is pivotal in the new railway line between Venkatachalam and Obulavaripalli and is a game changer in the freight operations of the zone.
This new line facilitates direct & viable connectivity between South Coast and West Coast and enhances the freight basket of South Central Railway.
Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR said that it is a matter of pride for the zone to have such remarkable structure. The newly constructed railway line is also helpful for decongestion of traffic on Vijayawada - Gudur Main line.

Vijayawada: The railway division of Vijayawada commissioned the longest electrified tunnel in India on Wednesday. The 6.6 km tunnel stands as an engineering marvel situated between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations which are a part of the recently completed Obulavaripalli – Venkatachalam railway line.So far, two freight trains made its successful run on June 25, 2019 marking the full-scale operation of the newly built electrified railway line between the two stations. Officials inspect the tunnel between Cherlopalli and Rapuru Stations. 
South Central Railway (SCR) has added another feather to its cap by commissioning the longest electrified tunnel in Indian Railways.
The electrified tunnel measuring 6.6 kilometres is situated between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations and is part of the 113-km new railway line completed recently between Obulavaripalli– Venkatachalam – Krishnapatnam Port.

SCR General Manager Gajanan Mallya lauded the efforts of the railway authorities and all the staff involved in completion of this tunnel in a record time of 43 months.
“The tunnel, an engineering marvel, is a pride for SCR zone. The new railway line is helpful for decongesting traffic on the Vijayawada-Gudur main line,” Mr. Mallya said, adding that the tunnel would reduce the distance between Krishnapatnam Port and the hinterland areas by 60 km.
At present, the average travel time taken by goods train from Krishnapatnam Port to Obulavaripali is 10 hours. With the commissioning of the new line, the travel time would be reduced to five hours, the General Manager said.
The electrified tunnel is constructed in the shape of ‘Horse Shoe’ on New Australian Tunnelling Method, at a cost of ₹460 crore. The height of the tunnel (rail level to roof) is 6.5 metres and the minimum height of the contact wire is maintained at 5.2 metres, the railway officials said.
Mr. Mallya said the new line would facilitate direct and viable connectivity between South Coast and West Coast Railway and improve freight revenue of the zone.
