The rail electrification will facilitate elimination of diesel traction. Fle photo for representation.
The rail electrification of the 44 Route Km (RKM) Kollam-Punalur and 124 RKM Palakkad-Pollachi-Palani corridors are to be completed along with the 673 RKM km targeted by Southern Railway during 2021-22.
This is part of the ambitious goal to switch over to ‘Green Railways’ by electrifying the balance Broad Gauge (BG) routes by December 2023 to achieve 100 % electrification of BG routes.
The

other BG stretches to be completed are Madurai-Manamadurai (45 RKM), Nagapattinam-Velankanni (10 RKM), Salem-Talaivasal (73 RKM), Pollachi-Podanur (38 RKM), Thalaivasal-Vridhachalam (66 RKM), Tiruchchirappalli-Pudukottai-Karaikudi (90 RKM), Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Virudunagar (124 RKM) and Manamadurai-Ramanathapuram (62 RKM).
The rail electrification will facilitate elimination of diesel traction resulting in significant reduction in its carbon footprint and environmental pollution. In addition, a cent % electrification by 2023 would result in annual savings of ₹ 14,500 crore for railways.
In the 5,080 RKM of Southern Railway, 3,529 RKM accounting for about 70 % has been electrified till March 2021. As envisaged in National Rail Plan & Vision 2024, Southern Railway has also geared up to complete electrification of all the BG routes under it by December 2023. As much as 187 RKM of electrified lines were commissioned in 2020-21. As of May 2021, 71 % of the BG network has been electrified. Instead of making available funds from the budget, electrification is now being financed through Extra Budgetary Resources. Around ₹21,000 crore is expected to be incurred for completion of electrification.
Besides making an environmentally friendly mode of transport, the railways can go for haulage of heavier freight trains and longer passenger trains with high haulage capacity of Electric Locomotives leading to increased throughput. Increased sectional capacity by eliminating detention on account of traction change and reduced operating and maintenance cost of Electric Loco are the benefits from the switch over.

traffic on the bridge, which connected the Rameswaram island with the mainland, remained suspended since December 4, 2018 after officials noticed cracks.
After the Madurai division completed the retrofit works, the Chennai-based Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), on being engaged by Southern Railway, had conducted stress-level tests and submitted its final report a few days ago.

A new railway line along East Coast Road between Karaikudi and Kanniyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Rameswaram has been shelved by the railway board.
By B AnbuselvanExpress News Service
CHENNAI: A new railway line along East Coast Road between Karaikudi and Kanniyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Rameswaram has been shelved by the railway board.
However, the 179-km new line proposed between Chennai

and Cuddalore via Mamallapuram and Puducherry is likely to get approval next year. Though the survey work for the east coast line was conducted in 2008, the project remained in cold storage for the last few years as the new line was considered unviable by the board. However recently, railways came forward to reconsider its decision if the State government agreed to set up a special purpose vehicle for railway projects.
In an RTI reply to Sreeram of Kanyakumari district railway users' association (KKDRUA) on November 11, the construction wing of Southern Railway, Chennai, has stated that the new line for 560 km connecting various parts in Sivaganga, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram and Kanniyakumari has been shelved by the board.
The proposed new line projects are Karaikudi-Thoothukudi via Ramanathapuram (214.81 km), Ramanathapuram-Kanniyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Kudankulam (247.66 km), Tirunelveli-Sankarankoil (77.41 km) and Viranialur- Nagercoil-Chettikulam (20.50 km).
The construction wing had conducted reconnaissance engineering-cum-traffic survey for these new broad gauge lines at different points of time between 2008 and 2013.
Rail users, including businessmen, have been demanding implementation of projects for more than a decade. "The new line may not yield the expected rate of return in the near future. Hence, the project may not be taken anytime soon. Without the State government's support no new line projects will be taken up in the State," a senior railway official said.
However, the 179-km Chennai - Cuddalore new line, via Mamallapuram and Puducherry, is likely to get a new lease of life. "The proposed new line to Cuddalore is to start from Chengalpattu as against Perungudi and a study is being conducted for realignment. The new line is expected to get approval by railways next year," the official said.

Even as the number of passengers turning to trains has swelled significantly following the recent steep bus fare hike, the passengers of Ramanathapuram district are waiting for the old train services run on the metre gauge track to be restored a decade after the gauge conversion was completed.
“We have only three pairs of passenger trains connecting us to Madurai and one pair connecting to Tiruchi. We had lost at least three pairs of passenger trains running to Palakkad, one pair of express train to Coimbatore and a passenger train that provided link to Tiruchi-Chennai Pallavan Express,” said Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee member B. Jagadeesan.
These

trains were run on the metre gauge track prior to gauge conversion. But even after more than 11 years of resumption of train services on commissioning the broad gauge track, these services trains had not been restored.
Railway sources said that around 50% of passenger patronage had increased on this section as the bus fare had been increased substantially. “Besides making a huge savings on money, train travel provides more comfort to passengers, especially to elders and children,” said a regular train traveller Ramesh. Three pairs of trains to Palakkad provided people of Rameswaram and other parts of Ramanathapuram district a direct and frequent link to Dindigul, Oddanchathiram and Pollachi markets and a link to pilgrims going to Palani.
Similarly, the train to Coimbatore was also helpful to the people to reach to the commercial city of the State.
Virutally, there is no link for the people of Rameswaram to Coimbatore and Palakkad. “We have been making repeated representations to the railway authorities. But that has not fructified till now,” Mr. Jagadessan said.
“Given the huge crowd in trains, we need at least one more passenger train to Madurai. The authorities can consider running the Punalur-Madurai Fast Passenger upto Rameswaram, as it is idling in Madurai from 6 a.m. till 10.30 p.m.,” Mr. Ramesh said.
Another suggestion made by the passengers is to adjust the timing of Thiruvananthapuram-Madurai Amritha Express so that it gets a passenger train link upto Rameswaram. “Amritha Express arrives Madurai at 1.15 p.m. whereas the Madurai-Rameswaram passenger train leaves at 12.40 p.m. If the timing is adjusted, a lot of passengers from Kerala could get a better rail link to Erwadi Dargah,” he said.
Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram Amritha Express has got a good link with an existing Rameswaram-Madurai passenger train. Devotees from Rameswaram use the train to go to Bannari Amman Temple in Erode district.
Passengers expect the Members of Parliament from the south and central districts to take up these issues during the meeting with Southern Railway General Manager, R.K. Kulshrestha to be held here on Saturday.
