STATE GOVT INACTION, LIP SERVICE BY NFR LEAVES TRAVELLERS IN THE LURCH
A series of news reports in Nagaland Post highlighting lack of political will by the state government to act on land encroachers within Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Dimapur, had attracted reaction from two legislators from Dimapur who have called for the state to immediately intervene in order to ensure expansion and development of Dimapur railway station in the larger interests of travelling public.According to NFR sources, encroachment has come in the way of expansion plans that are forcing projects to die premature deaths on the drawing board. The source said funds are not a problem for upgrading and expansion of Dimapur if land is made available. According to the source,
...

large tracts have been encroached on both sides of the station over which pattas have been issued.Eviction has been hampered by litigations that have dragged on for decades in the court. The NFR cannot wait perpetually to expand services to passengers as well as for ferrying goods in the region. NFR had plans to install escalator (like in Guwahati) but had to be abandoned and whatever facelift was given had to be done on the existing infrastructure. NFR also had plans to increase the present number of platform from two to five but even the one of them platform No.2 has no canopy due to lack of sufficient space.Land encroachment seems to have provided the excuse for the NFR to begin the diversion of a planned double–track that would have run through Dimapur. However, due to encroachments, measures are being undertaken to divert the planned double-track by skirting Dimapur. The new track breaking off from Dhansiri station through Dillai will bypass Dimapur and eventually reconnect with the Bokajan station. If land was available in Dimapur, the Dhansiri-Dimapur-Bokajan stretch would have an additional track. The double-track would have enabled trains to move in both directions, while shortening the mandatory stops for slower trains.Rightly or not, the perspective at NFR over Dimapur seems to be negated by encroachment and other problems. These have justified the consistent steps to decrease or downgrade the importance of Dimapur railway station. One of the ways by which Dimapur railway station is being systematically deprived of due share is with regard to quota of reserved seats. For instance, passengers at Dimapur have to buy tickets emanating at Jorhat, Furkating, Mariani or even Tinsukia for onward journey to Guwahati and beyond. This is because the quota for Dimapur is meagre in comparison with the volume of passengers.Instead of getting more trains to meet the number of travellers at Dimapur, which has earned huge revenue for NFR, the officials claimed that Dimapur railway station lacked basic facilities to be a termination point such as– AC coach, proper water supply, cleaning etc.Although there are around 3000 to 4000 passengers every day at Dimapur railway station, it has been allotted only 12 seats for 1st AC, 140 for 2nd AC, 347 for 3rd AC, 583 for Sleepers, 50 for AC Chairs and 186 for 2nd Class Sitting.Dimapur passengers are compelled to buy tickets at counters or online from quotas of Jorhat, Mariani or Tinsukia etc. The revenue will not be credited to Dimapur but to these stations in Assam. This is one way where Dimapur railway station’s revenue earning for NFR which till 2020 was the second highest has gone down even though the volume of travelling passengers remains high.Once the Silchar-Jiribam route goes functional, revenue generation at Dimapur would be affected. When that happens, Manipur would have the option of skirting Dimapur to haul its goods via Silchar. The systemic step-motherly treatment meted out to Dimapur can be seen in the manner in which NFR has taken away some trains meant for Dimapur passengers. The NFR has ‘hijacked’ Nagaland Express introduced on November 5, 2011, between Kamakhya Junction to Dimapur Railway Station (DMV) and terminating (holding back) at Dimapur. Presently Nagaland Express has been taken to Ledo in 2020 and now terminates at Ledo instead of Dimapur. The train is the only express (non-stop train) especially allotted for Dimapur. It may be recalled that NFR had also “hijacked” Dimapur-Guwahati Jan Shatabdi allotted during 1996-97 to Jorhat. The only train stopping at Dimapur (out of nearly 30 other trains) is B.G. EXPRESS – 15666, DIMAPUR (DMV) To GUWAHATI (GHY).Officials of NFR have said many times about plans to make Dimapur railway station into a world class station. However, the difference between promise and delivery appears to be too wide. While other state governments fight even to establish a small station, the state government seems to be more interested in projects rather than genuinely promoting existing rail and air travel to boost trade and tourism.

We unravel India's longest train route along with the world's longest train route and how they compare to each other, read more to find out the details of the interesting journeys.
Trains, the magnificent machines that were once powered by mechanical steam engines, have always fascinated mankind. Interesting facts about railways further ignite the curiosity in the mind of travellers. For instance, have you wondered why the distance between the tracks is fixed at 3.50 m or ADDED ONE MORE FACT? If yes, and you are into all things railways, we’ve got you covered! But today, we are addressing the Indian Railways and, more specifically, the longest train route the behemoth organization covers. We will also concisely talk about how the longest train

route in the world compares to the longest train route in India.
But, before we start, it is essential to understand the Indian Railways first. To count a few imperative facts about the organization, Indian Railways has one of the largest rail networks in the world with a history of 168 years and 1,26,611 km of tracks covering the whole country based on the 2021 data. This vast rail network is divided into 17 zones. What's even more astonishing is that the Indian Railways carried 3.43 million passengers every day from 2020-21.
The train route between Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari is the longest train route in India and also finds its place among the longest routes in the world as well. Before we start spitting the facts, it's crucial to mention that apart from one who needs to travel on the route, people can also embark on the journey for the fun of it. The fun of moving through different climates, terrain, and linguistic regions and having the first-hand experience of various cultures along the way.
The Vivek Express covers India's longest railway route, travelling 4273 kilometers over rails in 80 hours and 15 minutes with roughly 55 scheduled stops. It connects the northernmost tip of India's mainland, Kanyakumari (CAPE), in Tamil Nadu, to Dibrugarh (DBRG), in Assam, in the northeast. It follows the same path on the way back as well.  The Vivek Express train series began in November 2011 to commemorate Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary, which was to be held in 2013. When the nationwide lockdown to combat COVID-19 was announced in March 2020, this train was the last to suspend operations.
The train passes through load of stations from north to south like Tinsukia, Dimapur, Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Alipurduar, Siliguri, Kishanganj, Malda, Rampurhat, Pakur, Durgapur, Asansol, Kharagpur, Balasore, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Brahmapur, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Ongole, Nellore, Renigunta, Vellore, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, Aluva, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Chengannur, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Nagercoil.
The longest train route in the world, unsurprisingly, is in Russia, the world's largest country. The train journey takes six days and crosses multiple time zones. It connects western Russia to the country's far east. You begin your journey in Moscow and arrive in Vladivostok after six days and approximately 9,250 kilometers. Which when compared to India's longest train route still seems like quite a journey. To be exact is 4977 km longer which is more than double.

Construction of 82.50-km new broad gauge railway line from Dimapur to Kohima (Zubza) was going on in full swing and was expected to be ready by March 2026, while sanction had been granted to the proposed Dimapur-Tizit railway line.Further, survey for a new line between Furkating-Baghty Valley (24.10 km in Nagaland and 23.30 km in Assam) has also been completed.Mentioning this, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) chief public relations officer (CPRO) Sabyasachi De in a press release said the new railway line would bring Nagaland’s capital city on the broad-gauge railway map of the country. He mentioned that the new railway line project was being executed at an anticipated cost of

Rs 6,648 crore and included eight new stations, 22 major bridges, 165 minor bridges, 35 road overbridges/road under bridges and 31-km tunnel.Meanwhile, the 257-km new railway line project from Dimapur to Tizit at an estimated cost of Rs 4,274 crore had been sanctioned, while survey for a new line at a stretch of 47.40 km between Furkating-Baghty Valley (24.10 km in Nagaland and 23.30 km in Assam) had been completed.De said the new rail connectivity would make goods transportation easier and would largely help in boosting the economy of Nagaland. Claiming that Indian Railways had taken up a number of projects for infrastructure development at Dimapur during 2014-22, the CPRO said the railway system had been made passenger-friendly by providing toilets and ramps for divyangjans (differently-abled) at Dimapur railway station. He mentioned that new premium AC waiting hall had been added at Dimapur station with modern amenities, while platform and circulating area of the station had been developed with better infrastructural facilities. Water vending machine and airport type pay and use toilets had been provided too at the Station.Apart from these, he asserted that NFR had been on the forefront of implementing green initiatives with 100% LED lights in the stations in Nagaland. Bottle crusher machines had also been provided at Dimapur station, he added. In sync with Digital India initiative and information technology-oriented passenger applications, he said Passenger Reservation System (PRS) and Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) had also been provided in Nagaland, while passenger baggage screening system, coach indication display system and Integrated Passenger Information System had been provided. Digital Museum and free high-speed wi-fi had also been provided at Dimapur station, which had also been selected for redevelopment. Under this, the station would be redesigned with modern state of art facilities, modern passenger amenities and enhanced passenger interface.De claimed that during the period 2014-22, NFR had added several new amenities at the stations and trains from Nagaland, adding that different important infrastructural and long-pending works were completed during the Covid-induced lockdown. He recalled that eight Shramik Special trains ran carrying migrant workers to their native State. Also, the goods shed at Dimapur had been revamped with improved facilities and opened for outer stone chips, while 740 freight trains arrived in Nagaland with essential commodities between 2014 and 2022.The CPRO claimed that Nagaland held an important position in the development of the Northeast, adding that Indian Railways’ efforts in transforming the State through transportation would lead to the region’s holistic development.
