This Sunday the Commission of Railway Safety ran an inspection test on the 9.8-km Santirbazar-Belonia broad gauge line which connects to Agartala and could potentially extend to lines in Bangladesh.
Five decades after the erstwhile East Pakistan government suspended train services near Belonia, a small bordering town in South Tripura district, whistles of a rail engine have reignited hopes for an international rail route through the area. This Sunday the Commission of Railway Safety ran an inspection test on the 9.8-km Santirbazar-Belonia broad gauge line which connects to Agartala and could potentially extend to lines in Bangladesh.

became part of the rail network only in 2008, but railways are not new to Tripura. People of southern Tripura enjoyed railway connectivity till 1965 when the Indo-Pak War broke out. Then a small railway station at Parshuram village in East Pakistan, just 2 km away from Belonia, offered rail accessed to Feni which was a gateway to Chittagong and other cities on the other side. However, war changed everything. The railway station near Belonia was shut down after 1965, thus cutting Tripura’s access to railways.
“We could journey by train till Feni, a district town in now Bangladesh. One could get transport till Chittagong or Dhaka from there. I have not gone beyond Feni. But Kolkata could be accessed via Darshana,” remembers Birendra Kumar Shil, a 72-year-old retired librarian of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Government Degree College at Belonia.
Tripura played a crucial role in the birth of Bangladesh with liberation warriors being trained at Melaghar in now Sipahijala district and Agartala being used as a strategic hub for the war. Though this meant Tripura’s relations with Bangladesh, bonded by their common language, developed manifold after the nine-month Liberation War in 1971, the communication routes remained dead till both countries started talks for international rail connectivity in 2010.
India and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a 15.054-km rail line between Agartala and Akhaura in 2013. It is expected to become operational from 2019.
“People of Belonia have wanted the old rail route revived for years. Now, the new tracks can be linked with the old ones on other side of the border,” adds Shil. In fact, the Belonia railway station is only 80 feet away from the nearest Indo-Bangla check post.

He was speaking to reporters after a review meeting with Railways officials in presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on the ongoing and pending issues of railways in the state.
“Tripura is going to have three railway links with Bangladesh, said Gohain , detailing them.

and can be connected to Chittagong easily
* The third is via Sabroom
"Our railway is reaching upto Sabroom, from where Chittagong is only 60 kms” he said.
The railway connectivity between Belonia and Feni (in Bangladesh) will help us explore the possibility of connecting Tripura with Chittagong sea port in the near future, Gohain said.
He said that the India Railway is exploring the possibility of another trans-nation rail link between Tripura’s Khowai district to Sayestaganj in Hobiganj district of Bangladesh.
Gohain said that both Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, in separate meetings with him had urged to expedite the ongoing Railway projects in the state.
Both of them also requested the Centre to introduce a Rajdhani Express from here, he said.

AGARTALA, Dec 19 - Tripura will have a gateway to the world once the Feni bridge, connecting both sides of the international border, is constructed, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said today.
After the partition, Tripura had become geographically isolated with limited opportunities of connectivity, he said.
“The distance between Kolkata and Agartala, which was only 500 km, has been enhanced to around 1,160 km through Assam, adversely affecting the State’s communication system,” he said while speaking at a programme ‘Linking prospective food entrepreneurs with government scheme and markets’ organised by ASSOCHAM at Prajna

Bhavan here today.
“This geographical isolation, however, could be bridged once the Feni bridge is constructed connecting Sabroom with Bangladesh’s Ramgarh district,” he opined.
Sarkar further said that the bridge with an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore would facilitate access to Bangladesh’s sea port Chittagong.
“We want to use the Chittagong port by using the Feni bridge, since the Bangladesh’s sea port is only 72 km from the Sabroom subdivision of south Tripura,” he said, adding that the plan, if implemented, would change face of the State.
In his speech, the Chief Minister also mentioned that the government has been trying hard to extend the BG rail network up to Sabroom to harness business potential in the days to come.
Noting that the State is all set to export 100 megawatt power to Bangladesh within the next few days, Sarkar said the internet facility would be improved substantially within the next one or two months with the State looking for an international gateway of broadband service.
Expressing gratitude to ASSOCHAM for holding the programme, the Chief Minister exhorted the entrepreneurs to grab the local market before opting for exports.
“Thinking of setting up big industrial units may not be feasible right now. Instead, we can explore the potential in the field of agriculture and allied sectors,” he said.
Sarkar also told ASSOCHAM that knowledge sharing or communication may not be good enough to harness the potential of the food processing sector. “You must bring in exports from outside the State for capacity building of local entrepreneurs on how to set up and run a food processing unit successfully,” he said.
TIDC Managing Director and MP Jitendra Chowdhury, secretary of the Industries and Commerce Nagaraju Maddirala, Director of the Industries and Commerce VG Janner, SN Nundy, Managing Director–Matthews and Company, were present in the programme.

AGARTALA, Nov 7 - The broad gauge (BG) conversion work up to Udaipur would be completed by December, “if the current pace of works continues”, said H K Jaggi, General Manager (GM) of NFR, here.
The GM, who arrived here on Wednesday last, has inspected ongoing railway works at Udaipur, Sabroom and Agartala.
During inspection at Agartala Railway Station, the GM pointed out some loopholes in the existing works and asked the authority to make necessary change.

leaving for Silchar en route to Kumarghat, he said that the BG conversion work up to Udaipur has been making good process. “If the current pace of works continues, Udaipur will be on the country’s BG map by December itself,” he claimed.
As per the schedule, the BG rail track up to Udaipur would be ready for use by March 31, 2016, while Sabroom would be brought into BG track by 2018.
The NFR sources said that the GM’s trolley run was good up to Dharmanagar. He also inspected ongoing railway works up to Silchar via Badarpur and Karimganj.
The BG conversion work has already been completed in between Lumding and Silchar. Now, goods trains are running on the newly built GB track. However, CRS inspection is yet to be conducted.
During the visit, Jaggi met Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and requested him to take up construction of “road over bridge” and “road under bridge” with the Ministry of Railways since they were not included in the railway projects.
At Teliamura, BG works have got stalled with locals insisting for road over bridge to avoid any untoward incident after introduction of super-fast train.
“Since these were not included in the project, the NFR doesn’t have allocation to take up these additional components. I request the Chief Minister to take up construction of two issues with the Railways Ministry or the Centre so that road over bridge and road under bridge could be taken up,” he told the media.
