The ministry of defence on Tuesday gave permission to the Pune Municipal Corporation to start work on the delayed Ghorpadi railway overbridge (ROB), bringing to an end decades of wrangling between different agencies over land.
The defence ministry clea red the use of around 4,300sqm of its land managed by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) near the Ghorpadi level crossing, interjected by the Pune-Daund railway line. The project also involves 5,500sqm of the state government and railway land around the Pune-Miraj railway line, already allocated for the project.

long and chequered history of disputes between various agencies, primarily over land issues -especially the stretch of defence land in Ghorpadi. The area plagued by traffic snarls has two railway crossings less than a kilometre apart.
Welcoming the defence ministry's clearance to the railway overbridge project, a senior PCB official said, “This is a very good development. We will cooperate with the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation) in all ways possible to get the bridge constructed as soon as possible. The terms stated in the approval letter have been very clear and we hope the work to begin soon.“
Residents of the area were also happy over the development. “I have been born and brought up here. The bridge was getting delayed for some reason or the other. Now that the land issues have been sorted, the bridge should be constructed in quick time to make traffic snarls a thing of the past,“ said Tausif Quraishi, a Ghorpadi resident.
“On a few occasions it took me an hour to cross this less than one kilometre stretch because of horrible traffic snarls in the area. My passengers suffered because of it. This bridge should have been built decades ago. Now that the land problem has been resolved, the overbridge should built as soon as possible,“ said Uddhav Sandur, an autorickshaw driver.
