Lok Sabha MPs Su. Thirunavukkarasar (extreme left), S. S. Palanimanickam (second from left) and Karti Chidambaram (second from right) handing over a memorandum to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Wednesday. L

Five Members of Parliament have strongly urged the Chairman, Railway Board, New Delhi, to take necessary steps to restore express and passenger train services on the Tiruvarur-Karaikudi section following its conversion from metre gauge to broad gauge more than one-and-half-years ago.

Tiruchi MP Su.Thirunavukkarasar; Thanjavur MP S.S. Palanimanickam; Nagapattinam MP M. Selvaraj, Sivaganga MP Karti P. Chidambaram and Ramanathapuram MP Navas Kani met the Chairman, Railway Board and Chief Executive Officer Suneet Sharma at New Delhi on Wednesday and presented a memorandum pressing this and other demands. They also urged the Railway Board Chairman to appoint gatekeepers without any further delay on the nearly 150-km stretch.
The MPs took along with them few representatives of rail users association from Pattukottai, Adhiramapattinam and Aranthangi while meeting the Railway Board Chairman. Mr. Thirunavukkarasar, Mr. Palanimanickam and Mr. Karti Chidambaram subsequently met Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday and handed a representation on the issue. The MPs team said that resumption of train services in this section would immensely benefit the general public of Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Sivaganga districts.
The memorandum signed by the MPs said the Southern Railway was yet to recommence services on the section despite spending crores of money for converting it from metre gauge to broad gauge. The main reason for the delay was that gatekeepers were yet to be appointed for the 72 level crossings falling in this stretch, it further said.
The Tiruvarur - Karaikudi stretch via Tiruthuraipoondi, Pattukottai and Aranthangi is one of the oldest railway lines in the country laid during the British period. The gauge conversion works were completed in two portions- at first from Pattukottai to Karaikudi and from Tiruvarur to Pattukottai via Thiruthuraipoondi.
The Commissioner of Railway, Safety, Bengaluru, who conducted a statutory inspection for three days from Pattukottai to Karaikudi authorised the section for operation of passenger and freight trains in March 2018. A year later, the Commissioner of Railway Safety inspected the remaining stretch from Tiruvarur to Pattukottai via Thiruthuraipoondi and accorded statutory clearance for operation of passenger and freight trains in April 2019.
The Southern Railway operated Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train on the stretch with very few coaches. However, the patronage for the DEMU service without toilets remained poor due to the nearly six-hour long journey time taken by it to reach the destination. Subsequently, the DEMU service was suspended and the section has not witnessed any movement of trains ever since the lockdown was clamped in March 2020.
Mr. Thirunavukkarasar and Mr. Selvaraj told The Hindu over phone on Thursday that the Chairman, Railway Board, immediately spoke to the Southern Railway General Manager regarding the issue. The MPs team wanted the railway administration to ensure the appointment of gatekeepers at all the level crossing gates in this section which has the potential to connect stations up to Rameswaram. The team urged the Railway Board Chairman to take steps to resume rail services on this stretch coinciding with Tamil New Year’s day in April, said Mr. Thirunavukkarasar and Mr. Selvaraj.
The MPs in the memorandum also urged the railway administration to operate a Antyodaya express from Chennai to Rameswaram via Tiruvarur, Pattukottai and Karaikudi and reintroduction of daily overnight express train between Chennai and Karaikudi. Operation of passenger trains between Karaikudi and Mayiladuthurai and an early morning train from Velankanni to Madurai via Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Tiruchi were also put forth by the MPs during their meeting.

Chennai: Southern Railway may have completed gauge conversion and electrification of some stretches of lines in the state, but few attempts have been made to make the most of these to improve train connectivity. With no trains on at least three lines which are ready and not enough trains on two other lines, passengers want reintroduction of the trains that were running when the lines were metre gauge.
There are no trains on the Chennai-Ranipet stretch, now opened primarily for freight, the Dindigul-Pollachi, Madurai-Bodi and the Thiruvarur-Karaikal lines, while there are only two services along the Sengottai-Kollam stretch.

the coming months more lines are set to be ready after gauge conversion of Usilampatti-Andipatti, Andipatti-Theni and Theni-Bodinayakanur lines and doubling of Macheri Road-Mettur dam and Omalur-Mecheri Road lines are over.
Investments have been made to ready the infrastructure, but railways, fearinbg low patronage, is waiting for all the lines or the full stretch of a line to be completed before running trains.
Most of the scheduled express trains have resumed, connecting towns where there is demand for travel.
Edward Jeni, secretary of Kanyakumari District Railway Users' Association (KDRUA), said railways should run most trains on the lines that are ready after gauge conversion and electrification. “There is scope to run more trains on Sengottai-Kollam stretch and on Thiruvarur-Karaikal and Madurai-Theni stretch which will be ready soon. Railways can push for resuming trains that were running when lines were metre gauge.”
Since the Arakkonam-Salem MEMU was launched, people have been suggesting such services on short routes connecting small towns so that people can be encouraged to switch to trains from expensive buses.
An official said passenger services could not be introduced because of the Covid restrictions.
“There is scope for passenger services on the Chennai-Ranipet and the Tindivanam-Nagari stretch and also on other lines in future.” The idea is to complete ongoing infrastructure upgrade and bring more towns into the rail network so that trains can be introduced when there is a need, he added.
Sources said if private trains connecting traffic-intense towns become a success, railways may improve connections between small towns using train sets that do not need locomotives.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, has given his statutory clearance for operation of electric-loco hauled passenger and freight trains on the newly energised Cuddalore – Mayiladuthurai stretch on the main line section and on the Mayiladuthurai – Tiruvarur section.
The authorisation from the CRS K. A. Manoharan was issued recently after he conducted detailed inspection for two days on February 7 and 8 on both stretches followed by a speed trial from Tiruvarur to Cuddalore via Mayiladuthurai by travelling on board an electric-loco hauled special train and accompanied by top officials of the Southern Railway and the Tiruchi Railway Division.

according mandatory clearance, the CRS has issued a detailed set of stipulations to be adhered to by the railway administration. The Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Government of India enterprise, was given the task of electrifying the 228-km long main line section from Villupuram Junction to Thanjavur Junction via Cuddalore Port, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai and Kumbakonam and the separate stretch from Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvarur via Peralam and Nannilam.
The RVNL which is executing the project in phases had already electrified the first portion from Villupuram to Cuddalore and undertook the second portion in the main line section from Cuddalore to Mayiladuthurai via Chidambaram besides also taking up another separate stretch from Mayiladuthurai to Tiruvarur.
As part of the project, the RVNL had constructed a traction sub station at Cuddalore Port Junction which was inaugurated by the CRS during his inspection schedule. A senior railway official said the authorisation from the CRS has been communicated to the Southern Railway headquarters and the Tiruchi railway divisional authorities. The entire main line section and the Mayiladuthurai – Tiruvarur stretch falls under the jurisdiction of Tiruchi Railway Division.
The CRS has also asked the railway authorities to run freight trains for a period of one week prior to introduction of regular passenger services on the newly authorised sections so that the operation and working of new installations were stabilised. The date of introduction of electric traction for public carriage of passengers and freight in the sections should be conveyed to the CRS, the communication further said.
Overhead electrification works were under way in the last portion of the main line section from Mayiladuthurai to Thanjavur Junction via Kumbakonam. Completion of the project would pave the way for operation of electric loco hauled passenger and freight trains from Villupuram to Thanjavur.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru, has given statutory clearance for operation of electric locomotive hauled passenger and freight train services on the newly-electrified Thanjavur-Tiruvarur broad gauge section.
The authorisation from K.A. Manoharan, the CRS, came a few days ago after the officer conducted an inspection on January 31 on the nearly 55-km Thanjavur - Tiruvarur electrified stretch followed by a speed trial by travelling on board a special train hauled by an electric locomotive.

administration. This includes a direction to operate freight trains for a period of one week prior to introducing passenger trains so that the operation and working of the new installations were established, said an official communication from the CRS to the General, Manager, Southern Railway, the Tiruchi Railway Division and the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) which executed the overhead electrification project.
The Railway authorities were directed to put up general “caution notices” regarding danger of high voltage traction wires, at entrances to railway stations. The CRS should also be informed of the date of introduction of electric traction for public carriage of passengers and freight trains on the section.
The Thanjavur - Tiruvarur single line electrification work is part of the Tiruchi - Thanjavur - Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam - Karaikal overhead electrification project being executed in stages by the CORE at a cost of around ₹200 crore. Overhead electrification has already been completed on the double line stretch from Tiruchi to Thanjavur.
A senior CORE official told The Hindu on Friday that power supply from Tangedco to the newly constructed traction sub station at Thanjavur Junction was expected soon. The official said overhead electrification works on the last stretch from Tiruvarur to Karaikal was apace and would be completed before March. Freight and passenger trains from and to the port town of Karaikal were currently being hauled by diesel locomotives.
After completing the electrification works up to Karaikal, CORE would take up overhead electrification on the nearly 10 -km stretch from Nagapattinam to Velankanni. The official said foundation works have already commenced on this section and the electrification was expected to be completed by June.
The Railway Board has also accorded sanction for electrification of the Nidamangalam - Mannargudi stretch falling under the Tiruchi Railway Division.
