The 60-year-old Golden Rock Workshop has adopted best energy conservation practices and technologies such as:
vGOC increased its production by 19.42% despite the challenges faced due to unprecedented COVID lockdown
vThe energy conservation measures have led to reduction of electrical and thermal energy consumption by 25.6 %
vIOT (Internet of things) based condition monitoring system has been installed in 3 electrical substations and 45 machines. The system has also been installed in o­ne 3 tier AC Coach now running in Trichy – Howrah Express rake.
vTwo MIYAWAKI gardens were developed inside the workshop consisting of 4000 saplings inclusive of 500 saplings of Bheema Bamboos
v28.87% reduction in carbon footprint was achieved by the workshop during the year
vIn movement of Coach bogies, energy saving has been effected upto 46% through movement by Rail instead of by Road between workshop and Divisions which also resulted in 67% reduction in CO2 emission

The Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi has bagged ‘Innovation Award’ from the Railway Board for development and implementation of Internet of Things-based energy management and condition monitoring system for energy-intensive machines and substation low-tension panels.
A cash award of ₹1.5 lakh has been sanctioned by the board for the workshop, which participated in the ‘Suggestion Scheme for Best Innovation in Indian Railway’ organised by E&R Directorate of the Railway Board for 2019-20. The workshop bagged the first prize jointly with North-East Railway and was sanctioned the cash award as well.

release from the workshop said IoT-based energy management and condition monitoring system was not only cost-effective but also prevented dependency on supplier for software updation and inclusion of additional nodes. It could also be installed in on board equipment of carriages and locomotives besides in machineries and plants to assess their healthiness.
Being an energy management system and GreenCo (Gold-rated) certified workshop necessitated it to monitor electrical energy consumption up to micro level. Around 300 smart energy meters were provided in substation feeders and around 150 energy intensive machines for micro-level energy monitoring. Since manual collection of data was not paving the way for dynamic control of energy consumption, it was proposed to install an IoT-based smart energy management system. As the cost of the IoT-based system available in the open market was exorbitant, the workshop decided to develop its own system using the technical know-how of the staff.
The system thus developed collected data from energy meters and generated consolidated reports for critical analysis of energy consumption pattern. Since the system fetched energy consumption data every second, it had become a handy tool for energy planning and identification of high consumption machines, utilisation pattern and idle running of machines, the release further said.

The Golden Rock Railway Workshop here has surpassed the annual overhauling and production targets set by the Railway Board, New Delhi, by the end of February despite the pandemic.
In spite of full lockdown in April and partial opening in May and June last year, momentum of overhauling and manufacturing activities picked up in the current fiscal at the workshop from July onwards.

the total annual target with one month to go, a press release from the Chief Workshop Manager said. Against the expectation of 90 coaches per month, the workshop has been turning out 100 coaches per month in the last seven consecutive months. Such an increase in productivity was necessitated to supplement the shortfall that arose out of extended closure of two railway workshops earlier in Perambur.
In the manufacturing sector, the workshop completed 351 rolling stock programme wagons consisting of brake vans and open type wagons for carrying coal and other metal ores across the country. This was the highest ever production achieved in the last 50 years amidst pandemic blues faced globally. In February 2021 alone, 50 wagons were accomplished for the first time which was double the normal production rate. Seventy old ICF coaches were converted as new modified goods in a single fiscal which was the highest among the Southern Railway workshops in this year, the release further said.
