There is simmering discontent among rail-users after Tiruchy Division increased the price of platform ticket to `20 at important railway stations in its jurisdiction. Officials in the Tiruchy junction said the price revision would be in force for two months and said the objective was better crowd control as the annual festival was set to begin in Velankanni, which would see huge crowds travel from Tiruchy.
The Tiruchy Division on Tuesday issued the notification that to regulate rush and unauthorised entry into the railway stations, the price of platform tickets at Tiruchy Junction, Velankanni, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur Railway stations has been increased from `10 to `20 with effect from Wednesday at Tiruchy Junction and from August 15 at other stations.

The revised price would be effective from Wednesday to September 30 at Tiruchy Railway Station; and from August 15 to September 15 at Velankanni, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Kumbakonam and Thanjavur railway stations. The 11-day annual feast of Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Health, popularly called Annai Velankanni Matha, takes place every year in August and September with a huge procession and hoisting of the holy flag. The illuminated and colourful car procession carrying the idol of Our Lady of Health would be held with people from across the country participating in the procession.
Passengers who had come to send off their relatives at the railway station were in for a shock when they were charged `20 for the platform ticket.
Rail users said that nowhere in the country a revision has been made except for Secunderabad, which was made for 10 days to control the rush of Sabarimala passengers.
“The Velankanni festival at Nagapattinam has been going on for ages. The increase this year by the railway is not people-friendly. There are several other ways for the railways to make revenue instead of increasing the platform fee,” said D Sathish Chand, who came for sending his family off on the Guruvayur Express.
Speaking to Express, P Uday Kumar Reddy, the Divisional Railway Manager of the Tiruchy Railway Division, said: “The measure is being carried out on an experimental basis for the benefit of passengers by controlling the crowd.”
Railways to operate special trains to Velankanni
In view of the Velankanni festival, Southern Railway will operate special trains between Chennai and Velankanni. Train No. 06085 will leave Chennai Egmore at 10 45 pm on August 30, September 4 and 6. The train will reach Velankanni at 6.45 am the next day. The return train will leave Velankanni at 10 30 pm on August 31, September 5 and 7, reaching Chennai Egmore at 8.05 am the next day. The train will be have one 2 AC, two 3AC and 12 sleeper class coaches. Railways has also announced the operation of special trains from Chennai Central to Velankanni via Chennai Egmore. Train No. 06087 will leave Chennai Central at 9.50 pm on August 29, 31, September 5 and 7 reaching Velankanni at 6.45 am the next day. The return train will leave Velankanni at 10.30 pm on August 30.

TRICHY: Two locomotives moved on their own for 11 kilometers from Trichy railway junction after a brake failure on Wednesday morning, causing panic among railway officials.
The locos crossed two railway stations -- Palakkarai and Fort -- and two road overbridges and a river bridge before coming to a halt at Mutharasanallur railway station, after completing a 15-minute travel.
The runaway locos didn't cause any accident as no trains were scheduled for crossing in the stretch between Trichy railway junction and Mutharasanallur railway station on the Trichy-Karur section when the incident happened.
to officials in Trichy railway division, a shunting loco pilot brought two locos (No 40441 and 16881) to platform number A1 from the loco shed to couple them with the Trichy-Erode passenger train around 5.50am.
While the technical staff were preparing to couple them, the No 16881 loco started moving due to a brake failure and pushed the other loco (No 40441). The driver realised the situation and tried to stop the loco. However, he could not stop them and jumped out of the loco.
On being informed, station manager and others tried to stop the locos by placing stones on the tracks. However, their efforts went in vain.
Control room officials were alerted who in turn cautioned the station masters of Palakkarai, Fort station and Mutharasanallur station to stop the locos.
The locos travelled on the tracks and came to a halt after passing the last stopping signal (LSS) on Mutharasanallur railway station, which is situated on the outskirts of the city, around 6.00am.
Since the loco crossed LSS, officials technically termed the incident as signal passing at danger (SPAD), which is considered to be an accident.
Divisional railway manager Udaykumar Reddy rushed to Mutharasanallur station. Later, he ordered a probe in the incident.

Nowhere to park, motorists shooed away by railways
D Vincent Arockiaraj | Updated: May 18, 2017, 10.42 AM IST
TRICHY: Two-wheeler riders coming to the Trichy Junction railway station to pick up or drop passengers have alleged that railway authorities are barring them from parking their vehicles on the southern side of the station. They claim that they are chased away by the RPF personnel based on instructions from the railway officials. Due to this, they are forced to go around the railway premises to park the vehicles for a brief period or
else shell out parking fee for 12 hours at the two-wheeler stand. Adding to their woes, if they are found parking their two-wheelers at the space allotted in front of the divisional railway manager's office, the vehicles are chained and detained. Being one of the busiest railway stations in the state, thousands of passengers arrive from various destinations. Hundreds of passengers from Trichy and surrounding areas also travel to neighbouring districts like Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Karur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai for work. Though there is a dedicated parking lot for two-wheelers, no space has been allotted for those coming to pick up and drop passengers, they say. The two-wheeler parking lot, located on the northern side of the station, is already insufficient to accommodate hundreds of vehicles that come, forcing hundreds of motorists to park their vehicles in the open space on the opposite side. Due to this, there is no assurance to the safety of the vehicles, rue the motorists.
"It is unfair on the part of the railway authorities to force us into the parking area, where we have to pay for 12 hours, when we park our vehicles for just around 30 minutes. Before enforcing such action, authorities should first establish the required infrastructure to facilitate commuters," said L Rajkumar, a staff of a private concern in Trichy. Railway officials keep on telling that they would set up an additional parking lot for two-wheelers, cars and bicycles along the new entry and exit lane, however, nothing has fructified so far, the vehicle users allege. "Provision for a temporary parking lot should be established for this purpose as we are not allowed to park our vehicles other than the two-wheeler stand by RPF personnel," S Karthikeyan, a college student who arrived at the station to pick up his relative coming from Madurai. When contacted, a senior railway official said, "Since the space is being utilised for illegal parking, the new divisional railway manager instructed the officials to clear the area."
