Container Corporation of India (Concor) will begin train services from the Chennai Port to its inland container depot (ICD) located at Tondiarpet from September 16, the state-run rail hauler of containers said in a trade notice on Thursday. The rail freight for moving laden containers between Chennai Port and Tondiarpet ICD has been set at ₹2,100 for a twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) and ₹3,300 for a forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU), the company said. The move follows a Railway Ministry decision to introduce round-trip based rate scheme for ultra-short lead (up to 50 km) container movements — both EXIM and domestic — from September 15, to attract this segment to rail from road. From Tondiarpet ICD, Concor will haul the containers to customers in the hinterland on the daily service it runs to its flagship ICD at Tughlakabad near Delhi, weekly service to Balasore (Odisha) and fortnightly service to Shalimar (West Bengal).

When Tondiarpet station gets the coveted status, train services on the northern line will improve considerably
Southern Railway’s plan to convert Tondiarpet railway station into Chennai’s fourth railway terminal has brought cheers to commuters of north Chennai, for the conversion will bring them substantial benefits.
It will increase in the number of train services, including suburban trains. There will be a vast improvement in basic amenities at the key railway stations along the northern rail line between Chennai Central and

railway stations.
For years, the Central and Egmore railway stations have been the only two railway terminals in the city.
Chennai Central takes care of north- and west-bound trains and the Egmore station those headed to other parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puduchery.
Every day, on an average, the two stations handle more than 300 trains, including suburban services, with more than five lakh passengers.
A third terminal is being constructed at Tambaram railway station, primarily to de-congest the Egmore terminal.
The proposed Tondiarpet railway terminal will the ease the burden on the Chennai Central station. “For a long time, train travellers from north Chennai have been going to Egmore or Chennai Central Station to board trains bound for other parts of the State or outside the State. With the new plan, it would be easier for us to board long-distance trains at Tondiarpet,” S. Prakash, a commuter from Royapuram, said.
Interestingly, the conversion of Tondiarpet railway station into a terminal will lead to more suburban train services being operated on the northern rail route of the city. Currently, on an average, for every 15-20
minutes, there is only one train between Central and Gummudipoondi railway stations, a distance of around 45 km. In contrast, the frequency of local trains on the southern line between Beach and Tambaram
stations is a train every five minutes, during rush hour.
During Sundays, when the trains are taken to the shed for weekly maintenance, commuters from the northern part of the city have to wait for a few hours if they have to commute between Chennai Central and Gummudipoondi.
Railway officials said such problems would be addressed as more tracks would enable more train services to be operated.
Likewise, basic amenities including seating arrangements, lighting, toilets, water taps, security and time-boards would be improved at the railway stations along the northern rail line.

Intermodal logistics giant Container Corporation of India is expanding its time-definite containerized services as major ports work aggressively to take more freight off Indian highways to ease road congestion.
Concor this week began operating a new scheduled service from Dadri, a busy inland container depot near Delhi, to the Tondiarpet ICD on the outskirts of Chennai.
“This service is a significant step in facilitating the trade and in continuation of complying with the announcements made by the Minister for Railways. The transit time of the service is below 70 hours,” an official statement

said.
The new service comes in addition to three time-guaranteed services that Concor operates from the Okhla ICD to Tondiarpet, Whitefield (Bangalore) and Nagulapalli (Hyderabad).
Concor said it expects containerized rail movements on the Dadri-Tondiarpet route to increase by 20 to 25 percent, given the logistics cost benefits for shippers.
For Chennai Port, which has been battling drayage bottlenecks, the upgraded rail service should help draw more truckloads onto intermodal trains, especially as the public port is offering special incentives for rail cargo. That shift could help Chennai end congestion problems that have prompted many mainline carriers, including Maersk Line, to shift their weekly calls to nearby private ports, including Kattupalli and Krishnapatnam.
That congestion has dragged down throughput growth at Chennai, according to an analysis of port statistics compiled by JOC.com that shows Chennai’s annual volumes have hovered around 1.5 million twenty-foot-equivalent units in recent years. The port has a total capacity of about 3 million TEUs per year.
Chennai’s first-half throughput through September dropped 7 percent to 748,000 TEUs from 804,000 TEUs in the same period last year, port statistics shows.
Rail infrastructure development is a top priority for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government as part of a larger scheme to upgrade port connectivity and ease growing pressure on land transport systems. To accelerate those efforts, the government has set up a separate company — Indian Port Rail Corporation — based on equity participation from major port authorities and Indian Railways. IPRCL has already been awarded contracts for 22 port-rail projects with a total estimated investment of Rs. 20,000 crore (approximately $3 billion).
IPRCL also recently set up a cooperation deal with Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national rail company, for the upgrade of port rail infrastructure in the country.
