BENGALURU: The demand for Vistadome coaches, which have glass ceilings, to be used to showcase the pristine Western Ghats is only growing louder. The South Western Railways (SWR) is getting many suggestions and requests to use these coaches on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru line or even to Dudhsagar in Goa.Railway officials said that nothing has been finalised yet and they have to get the Railway Ministry’s approval. Experts and nature lovers point out that since the railway line runs through the ghats this would be an ideal opportunity to showcase the pristine beauty and get people interested in conservation. They suggest that these coaches be used in trains which ply during the day through the ghat sections.

firms have made videos using images of Vistadome coaches and the scenic beauty of the ghats between Bengaluru and Mangaluru to present a glimpse of how the journey in future will be. The videos have gone viral on social media. The SWR has so far got one Vistadome coach, which is an AC chair car which is GPS enabled with Wi-Fi, LED lights, a microwave oven and a refrigerator, but has not been tested on ground.
SWR, Divisional Railway Manager, Ashok Kumar Verma told TNIE that plying the train with the Vistadome coach depends on demand. “There is a demand for Sakleshpur, Mangaluru and Karwar. Some also want it to be run till Dudhsagar. The date of operation has not been decided,” he said.  He added that it will mostly be run in the ghats section.
“We are waiting for three more coaches. The services will also depend upon the availability of coaches. We are expecting to get three more Vistadome coaches by mid-April. We will need certification from the zonal headquarters to start operations,” he added.
Railways is also working on the rates to be levied on passengers. It will, however, be finalised by the Centre. Verma said that it will be on  par with the AC chair car rates. According to SWR, the AC chair car rate from Bengaluru to Chennai is between Rs 400-500, executive rate is between Rs 600-800 and that of Shatabdi is between Rs 1,800-1,900, depending on the distance. The SWR commercial section said that the rate of the Vistadome coaches is likely to be on par with Shatabdi.

CII-Mangaluru seeks rail line on proposed Shiradi tunnel Our BureauMangaluru |Updated onJanuary 07, 2021Published onJanuary 07, 2021 Mangaluru Junction (file photo)Mangaluru Junction (file photo)× SHARE SHARE SHARE SHARESHARE COMMENTThe move would be a win-win for commuters and for goods movementThe Mangaluru chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has suggested to the Government that it take up a feasibility study on aligning the broad-gauge train tracks on the proposed 23.6-km-long tunnel project on the Shiradi Ghat stretch of Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway. In a letter to the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, the CII Mangaluru chapter Chairman, K Prakash Rao, said that the minister’s recent announcement on plans to build a 23.6-km-long, six-lane tunnel on Shiradi Ghat was a long-pending demand of the people of Dakshina Kannada. CII-Mangaluru urges Karnataka govt to study viability of 6-lane highway projectFeasibility studyRequesting a...

feasibility study to consider aligning the broad-gauge train tracks in the proposed tunnel project, he said it would improve the speed substantially as it would reduce the steep gradient the trains have to take now from Mangaluru to Hassan on their forward journey to Bengaluru. New tech on ghat section of Bengaluru-Mangaluru rail lineRao said the proposed tunnel project is fully justified as it would improve the port connectivity substantially and will exporters and importers for easy movement of goods to and from New Mangalore Port. This would reduce time and cost, making exports through New Mangalore Port highly viable. He said most exports from the hinterland of New Mangalore Port now happen through other ports, adding substantial cost to exporters. New Mangalore Port is one of the best all-weather ports in the southern region and is not a congested port. However, the prohibitive costs of cargo transportation from the hinterland have made it difficult for exporters to use the port. Reducing time and costHe said the proposed project would also address the problems faced by commuters travelling between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. The road blocks on the Ghat section during monsoon months result in nearly six hours’ delay in reaching the destination, causing much hardship to passengers travelling by bus. Though the distance between Mangaluru and Bengaluru is only 350 km by road, it now takes over 14 hours if a person wants to travel by train. The trains require double engines to negotiate the steep gradient of the Shiradi Ghat section. Rao said aligning the tracks with the proposed tunnel would reduce the time by over three hours for train journey and reduce the cost too. It would be a win-win situation for the commuters and goods movement too, he added

Good move. Along with all the activities, scrap the HMRDA agreement, which is a hurdle for travellers.
Just a few days back, I wrote that new line from Hassan to Mulki can be explored and with this realignment project, direct link to Konkan railway should be done bypassing SR areas.
But with industries pressing for Mangalore port link (which is with SR), hope for passenger trains gets reduced.
Anyway,

If new alignment happened for ~25 kms along with proposed NH tunnel, then there will be high chance that HMRDA can get over.

Fresh landslips occurred between Kadagaravalli and Yedakumari stations on Subrahmanya Road-Sakleshpur Ghat section of the South Western Railway on Monday and Tuesday. South Western Railway says the track could be cleared for train traffic only by September 10.
The South Western Railway has cancelled the only available train service between Bengaluru and Karwar that was being operated via Tirupathur, Palakkad and Shoranur till September 1.
Consequently, the disconnection of the coast with the hinterland following the closure of Shiradi and Sampaje ghat roads has only amplified with people finding it extremely difficult

to commute between these places.
Bengaluru-Karwar-Kannur services that were running via Shravanabelagola four days a week and via Mysuru three days a week were operating on the diverted route after several landslips on the Shiradi Ghat stretch. The South Western Railway has cancelled the tri-weekly day train services between Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction and Yeshwantpur-Karwar owing to the same reason.
South Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer E. Vijaya told The Hindu that the zone was prepared to operate the services, though it entailed about a 500-km and five-hour extra journey. However, the Southern Railway, the network on which the diverted train traverses for major part of the journey, has said that it would not be able to accommodate the train.
She said that Southern Railway was facing shortage of crew as well as path in the aftermath of floods in Kerala. Though the trains were running on the diverted route, they had good occupancy rate as road networks remained severed, Ms. Vijaya said.
Southern Railway’s Chief Operations Manager S. Anantharaman told The Hindu that half of the crew in Kerala were in relief camps and hence, the zone was unable to provide the required crew to operate the diverted trains. Once they come back, say within a week, Southern Railway could accommodate the trains, he said.
Sources in Mangaluru Railway region said that the trains were running almost 24 hours behind schedule after the diversion thereby bringing down the occupancy rate drastically. The South Western Railway could have deployed an additional rake or operated a slip service between Karwar and Mangaluru to bridge the gap.
West Coast Rail Yatri Abhivriddhi Sangha advisor Anil Hegde said that the South Western Railway should operate the trains via Hubballi and Madgaon in the interest of the general public. In the initial days itself, National Railway Users Consultative Council Member Kunjal Venkatesh Kini had made this demand. Ms. Vijaya, however, said that the Dudhsagar Ghat stretch too was witnessing landslips and hence, the trains were not diverted on that route.
