AWANTISWAMIN TEMPLE
.
On the Srinagar-Jammu NH-1A, at a distance of approx. 30 kms lies the two temple ruins in Awantipora, in Pulwama District. The first ruin is the Awantiswamin Temple, A Vaishnava temple built by king Awantivarman (855 AD – 883 AD) where Vaikuntha Vishnu was the presiding deity. The second ruin is Avanteswara Temple, built by King Lalitaditya dedicated to Lord Shiva situated in Awantipora town, but Awantiswamin is better preserved.

This imposing monument has been built on a two-tiered base in the centre of a paved courtyard. Buddhist influence is quite evident in the architecture. The outer boundary wall or the courtyard has four shrines in its four corners. The entrance to the temple is located in the middle of the west wall and can be approached by a flight of steps. The walls have beautifully sculpted designs and images of Gods. Even though the temple is dedicated to Vishnu, images of Shiva can also be seen on the pillars and stones. Even after 1200 years, the sculpted images are distinctly visible and impressive.
.
How to reach:
Alight at Awantipora station and head to the temple. Travelling options are limited.
.
Most of the tourists visit from Srinagar, on their way to Pahalgam/Anantnag. JKSRTC buses ply from JKSRTC Bus Stand, Near Tourist Reception Centre, Dalgate, Srinagar
.
Lastly, a hassle free option is to hire a taxi and visit the place on the way to Pahalgam.
.
P.S.: The popular song "Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikva Toh Nahin" from 1975 movie Aandhi has been shot here.
