GUWAHATI, Jan 12 – The Railways is expecting to complete work on the gauge conversion project in the entire 511.8-km Rangiya-Murkongselek section within this financial year.
Senior Indian Railways officials told The Assam Tribune that work on the final stretch between North Lakhimpur to Murkongselek is at its final stages and once it is complete, the entire stretch would be opened for goods and passenger services within a short time.
“The 154-km stretch between North Lakhimpur and Murkongselek is the last phase of the Rangiya-Murkongselek gauge conversion project. Work is at its last

stages and the entire line would be ready by March,” an official told this newspaper.
The Indian Railways had earlier opened the Rangiya-Rangapara-Harmuti section for passenger service as well as the finger line between Rangapara and Dekargaon.
“Last month, the stretch between Harmuti and North Lakhimpur also received the go ahead for passenger service from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) and service in that stretch is expected soon,” said the official.
Work on the section is being carried out by the Northeast Frontier Railway Construction Organisation.
The 154-km stretch between North Lakhimpur and Murkongselek has 68 major bridges, 51 minor bridges, one road overbridge (ROB), four road underbridges (RUB) and 12 stations.
In the entire section between Rangiya and Murkongselek, there are 662 major bridges, 210 minor bridges, ten ROBs, eight RUBs and 39 stations.
In addition, NFR(C) has also conducted engine rolling in the finger line between Balipara and Bhalukpong (34.47 km). There are ten major bridges, 101 minor bridges, one ROB, one RUB and one station in that finger line.
