For the first time, LHB coaches were introduced in the country in 2000, while the first indigenous LHB coach was operated in 2003.
Indian Railways on a modern coach production spree! The national transporter’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai has created a record by manufacturing 2,222 LHB coaches in just 8 months and 11 days in the ongoing financial year. Last financial year, Indian Railways ICF had produced the same number (a total of 2,222) Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches in 12 months. Indian Railways has completely stopped production of ICF-design coaches for trains on its network. LHB coaches, with German technology, offer a better and safer travel platform. while the first indigenous LHB coach was made in 2003.
As stated above, LHB coaches are considered to be safer and better than ICF-design coaches. Unlike ICF-design coaches, the LHB coaches have higher speed potential, boast a higher carrying capacity, are lighter in weight, have increased codal life and also boast better safety features. Additionally, LHB coaches have anti-climbing features that prevent them from getting piled up during railway accidents.
Therefore, in order to provide better safety and more comfortable train journeys to passengers, the Railway Ministry has put an end to the production of ICF-design coaches. From the month of April 2018, only LHB coaches are being developed by the Production Units of the national transporter. As passenger safety is one of the top-most priorities for Indian Railways, Piyush Goyal-led Railway Ministry is introducing various measures to prevent rail accidents as well as to enhance safety and security.
In the past few months, many Indian Railways’ trains have been upgraded with modern LHB rakes. Some of the trains which have been upgraded with LHB rakes include train number 12759/12760 Charminar Express, train number 15269/15270 Jansadharan Express, train number 20653/20654 Belagavi-Bengaluru Daily Superfast Express, train number 12024/12023 Howrah-Patna Jan Shatabdi Express.

Indian Railways’ South Central Railway (SCR) zone in its effort to cut down on its energy bills as well as strengthening environment conservation has recently introduced the Head on Generation (HOG) technology in eleven trains.
The HOG technology has been recently introduced in trains fitted with LHB coaches and hauled by electric traction. This technology caters to the power needs of the coaches such as coach lighting, air conditioning, etc by substituting the earlier technology of having two power cars in the trains known as End on Generators (EOG).
The South Central Railway

zone is expected to save around ₹29.3 crores per annum with the introduction of HOG technology.
In a statement issued by SCR, the fuel consumtion for these 11 trains per annum annum was around 49.7 lakh litres incurring a cost of more than ₹35 crores. After the introduction of HOG technology the electrical energy consumption cost for these trains will be ₹5.7 crore per annum.
Earlier , the Northern Railway zone of Indian Railways also converted 14 pairs of trains under the ‘Head On Generation’ (HOG) system.
How HOG technology works
The power supply tapped from power lines through pantograph to the train engine is used to run the engine and haul the coaches.
Now in this new system power supply tapped from overhead to the train engine will be distributed to the trailing coaches for power needs.
The HOG system does not require any diesel oil consumption and as such will reduce air pollution and also noise pollution. In addition, it also provides uninterrupted illumination in the coaches.
In the first phase, all but two trains (totalling 10 trains) having total LHB coaches and running end-to-end with electric traction facility have been converted to HOG technology. In addition, one more train with LHB coaches (i.e., Rayalaseema Express) running partly in diesel section has also been converted into HOG within the electrified section.
List of trains coverted to HOG system in SCR zone:
As such, the 11 trains running with HOG technology and LHB on SCR include ---Charminar Express (12759/12760),
-Vikrama Simhapuri Amaravati Express (12744/12743),
-Telangana Express (12723/12724),
-Tirupati – JammuTawi Humsafar Express (22705/22706),
-Double Decker Express (22708/22707),
-Narayanadri Express (12733/12734),

-Lingampalli - Vijayawada Intercity Express (12795/12796)
-Rayalaseema Express (12793/12794).
In the first phase, all but two trains (totalling 10 trains) having total LHB coaches and running end-to-end with electric traction have been converted to HOG

by electric traction, is bringing in a transformational change in train running in terms of both financial savings (due to reduction in diesel consumption) and promoting environment (by reducing both air and noise pollution)
HOG technology can be introduced in trains with LHB coaches and hauled with electric traction. This technology caters to the power needs of the coaches such as coach lighting, Air conditioning, etc by substitutingthe earlier technology of having two power cars in the trains known as End on Generators (EOG).
In general, the power supply tapped from power lines throughpantograph to the train engine is used to run the engine and haul thecoaches. Now in this new system power supply tapped from overhead to the train engine will be distributed to the trailing coaches for power needs. This new system does not require any diesel oil consumption and as suchwill reduce air pollution and also noise pollution. In addition, it also provides uninterrupted illumination in the coaches.
Taking forward the implementation of new technology, Charminar Express running between Hyderabad - MGR Chennai Central - Hyderabad has also been provided with HOG technology from today i.e., 04th November, 2019. Earlier Charminar Express was running with traditional ICF coaches and electric traction power from end to end. Now the train is converted to run with LHB coaches paving the way for implementation of HOG technology.
With this in the first phase, all but two trains (totalling 10 trains) having total LHB coaches and running end-to-end with electric traction facility have been converted to HOG technology. In addition, one more train with LHB coaches (i.e., Rayalaseema Express) running partly in diesel section has also been converted into HOG within the electrified section.
As such, the 11 trains running with HOG technology and LHB on SCR include Charminar Express (12759/12760), Vikrama Simhapuri Amaravati Express (12744/12743), Telangana Express (12723/12724),Tirupati – JammuTawi Humsafar Express (22705/22706),Double Decker Express (22708/22707), Narayanadri Express (12733/12734), Secunderabad - Nagpur Express (12771/12772), Secunderabad - Sirpur Khagaznagar Express(12757/12758), Secunderabad - Guntur (12705/12706), Lingampalli - Vijayawada Intercity Express (12795/12796) and Rayalaseema Express (12793/12794).
Earlier, the fuel consumption for these 11 trains per annum was around 49.7 lakh litres incurring a cost of more than Rs 35 crores. Whereas, currently the electrical energy consumption cost for these trains is only Rs 5.7 crore per annum. Thus, the estimated savings for Railways on account of introduction of HOG in all these 11 trains comes to Rs 29.3 crores per annum.
Shri Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR advised officers and staff to expedite the installation process of HOG compatible equipment in the Electrical locomotives and also replacing the existing ICF traditional coaches with all new LHB. Plans are on hand to introduce similar system in some more trains shortly to reduce the diesel consumption and also towards environment conservation. Accordingly, modification of electric locomotives and LHB coaches (to comply with HOG technology) and other steps are in fast progress.
