HYDERABAD: Robbers brought Chengalpattu-Kacheguda express train to halt by tampering with the outer signal at Vanganuru railway station near Tadipatri in Andhra Pradesh during the wee hours of Thursday and snatched away the gold chain of a woman passenger. The assailants fled from the scene after a railway constable opened fire into the air.
The victim, P B Manjula, 48, is a house wife from Green Park Colony in Saidabad. Manjula’s husband P Bhaskar Reddy is a private contractor. Recently, Manjula along with her husband and their daughter, went to attend a ceremony at their relative’s house in Arakkonam, Tamilnadu.

attending the ceremony, Bhaskar Reddy’s family boarded Chengalpattu- Kacheguda Express train (17651) at Arakkonam railway station on Wednesday evening.
The train was running late and after crossing Yerraguntla junction stop in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. It stopped at the outer signal before Vanganuru railway station. After the train came to a halt in a dark isolated place, about six to seven robbers started hurling stones on the S-4 sleeper coach.
As the doors of all the compartments were locked from inside, the robbers started looking for passengers sleeping next to open windows. “Two offenders came to S1 coach where the victim, Manjula was asleep. While one offender sat on the ground next to the window, his associate stood on him and pulled the mangalsutra chain of the victim. She resisted and raised an alarm. Due to the resistance, mangalsutra remained with the victim in her hand and the offenders escaped with the chain weighing about 4.5 tolas,” Kacheguda Government Railway Police (GRP) inspector D Vijay Lala said.
The robbers fled from the scene after Subhan, one of the two armed escort GRP constables, opened fire into the air. Manjula lodged a complaint with Kacheguda railway police in Hyderabad after reaching her destination on Thursday morning. “We have registered a robbery case under section 394 of the IPC and transferred the case to Gooty GRP,” the inspector said.
