The sleeper class waiting-list of the Pandiyan Express (Chennai-Madurai) touched 1,058, while the waiting list of the Cheran Express (Chennai-Coimbatore) reached 639.
CHENNAI: Pandiyan Express, a flagship train of Madurai, has become one of the much sought-after trains for the Diwali festival this year, with the waiting list touching 1,058 for sleeper class reservation. On Thursday, as soon as advance reservation commenced around 8 am for travelling for Deepavali festival on November 2, tickets sold out in less than five minutes. sleeper class waiting-list of the Pandiyan Express (Chennai-Madurai) touched 1,058, while the waiting list of the Cheran Express (Chennai-Coimbatore) reached 639. Similarly, the Chennai-Coimbatore Nilagiri Express, Chennai-Erode Yercaud Express, Chennai-Tiruchy Rockfort Express also remained most preferred trains among passengers.
The sleeper berth waiting lists for the Nilgiri Express, Yercaud Express and Rockfort Express closed at 365, 487 and 276 respectively. Each train has waiting list limits for sleeper class somewhere between 150 and 250. Once waiting lists exceeds, ticket bookings will automatically get blocked. However, due to festival demands, the IRCTC has increased the waiting list limit for many trains. The unforeseen demand for the Pandiyan Express and other trains is attributed to upgraded IRCTC website and the provisions to forecast confirmation probability.
“The upgraded website has reduced the ticket booking time. It also has a provision to forecast the probability of getting confirmed tickets. For upto 200 and 250 sleeper waiting lists, the IRCTC predicted 45 to 60 per cent chances for RAC ticket. As for the Pandiyan Express, for 700 waiting lists the portal predicted confirmation chances at 40 per cent,” said S Balamurana, a travel agent in Chennai.Earlier, many passengers who booked their tickets through counters after spending several hours were disappointed as many they got wait-listed tickets.

Salem junctions. This is in line with the recent circular of the railway board, which has said that all the zonal railways have to introduce the concept of single person/leader responsible for co-ordinating the entire team and facilitating all services during the complete journey of the train.
Premium trains such as Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duranto have Train Superintendent on end-to-end basis. All onboard railway personnel and supervisors of all outsourcing agencies shall report to the Train Captain, as it would help ensure improvement in on-board services, the circular said.
The divisional railway has to ensure that the name and contact number of the Train Captain is available to the passsengers through reservation charts and the same should be reached to every reserved passenger travelling in the trains.
Following the circular, the Salem Division is in the process of introducing Train Captain for Train No. 22666/22665 Coimbatore-KSR Bengaluru-Coimbatore UDAY Express, 12673/12674 Coimbatore-Chennai Central-Coimbatore Cheran Express and 22154/22153 Salem-Chennai Egmore-Salem Express from the beginning of next week, a top official of the Salem Division said.
The Salem division is operating an average of 90 express/mail trains every week, the official adds.

Proposal pending with Railway Board The Southern Railway has sent a proposal to the Railway Board for replacing the conventional coaches with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches of German technology for the prestigious Train No. 12671/12672 Nilgairi Express (also known as Blue Mountain). The proposal is pending with the Railway Board for quite some time.
The Southern Railway had sought around 300 LHB coaches from the Railway Board for the entire zone, the sources said.

or while starting from the stations. This resulted in railways replacing the present coaches with central buffer couplings of LHB coaches.
Tourists from far off places within and outside the nation travel in this train to travel in the heritage toy train called Nilgiri Mountain Railway known as NMR. These tourists go through uncomfortable journey in the old worn-out conventional coaches. Officials said that the coaches with the Centre Buffer Couples (CBC) were introduced long back. If any of the coaches of the train got stuck, it is difficult to replace it with another coach, they add. Advantages of the CBC is that the rakes fitted with it can be run with high speed and has high hauling capacity and permits to attach more number of coaches, in times of need.
The Cheran Express presently running with LHB coaches started rake-sharing arrangement with train No. 12623/12624 Chennai- Thiruvananthapuram- Chennai from February 1, sources said. Earlier, Cheran Express had a rake-sharing arrangement with the Chennai Central - Ahmedabad - Navajeevan Express.
The rakes of Train No. 12624 Thiruvananthapuram- Chennai reaching Chennai at 7.30 pm will be used for No. 12673 Cheran Express, which leaves Chennai Central at 10.10 pm and the rakes of No. 12674 Cheran Express would be shared with the trainleaving Chennai Central at 7.45 pm, the sources said.
