MADURAI: When lot of discussion happens about Indian Railways running in loss and efforts to turn it profitable; half dozen weekly trains in Tamil Nadu and Union Territory, Pondicherry are hauled to major junctions nearby for maintenance works since most of them originate from small stations without facilities to maintain such long trains. While railway officials say that such situation arises when trains have to originate from these small stations due to popular demand, rail users point out that such dry runs for maintenance could be effectively used by running them as passenger trains at least.
As per the policy circular of Railway Board in January 2007, all mail and express trains with one way run more than 3500 kilo meters as

well as trains whose one way trip is less than 3500 kilo meters but round trip is more than 3500 kilo meters should be maintained as per the following pattern. At both ends, under gear examination and brake system maintenance at pit line should be carried out at both ends so are the internal cleaning, passenger amenity attention and watering and external cleaning on nominated line with proper facilities. But stations like Kanyakumari, Puducherry (Pondicherry) and Mannarkudi are not provided with pit line or stabling lines to carry out any maintenance works. Hence the long running trains originating from these stations are taken to Nagercoil, Villupuram and Trichy respectively without any passengers for maintenance. The dry runs or empty hauling of train cost to railways.
A senior official at Southern Railways opined that such long running trains originating from smaller stations occur due to pressure from local politicians trying to garner support from public for elections. "Ultimately it costs heavily to railways. Any long running train has to be maintained properly from safety perspective but those small stations have to be taken to nearby junctions with pit lines and stabling lines which is inevitable", he said. P Edward Jeni, Secretary of Kanyakumari District Rail Users Associations (KKDRUA) said that railways can consider running these trains as passengers' specials while taking them for maintenance. "Instead of taking entire rake of 23 coaches empty to nearby junction, they can be operated as passenger trains at peak hours so that there is some marginal revenue to railways", he pointed out. The association anticipated that union railway budget will sanction funds to develop proper yard facility at Kanyakumari station which is yet to materialize.

Approximate per km cost of running trains as per railway sources
Electric traction: Rs 13.45 km/tonne
Diesel traction: Rs 32.25 km/tonne
Electric traction is efficient with higher acceleration and quick deceleration when compared to diesel traction which is costly and polluting
It is huge cost to move a long train empty either in electric or diesel traction
