Railway staff trying to lift the engine of Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram Passenger that derailed at the Kollam railway station on Friday.C. SURESH KUMARC_SURESH KUMAR
The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Divisional Manager has said that a special committee will probe the derailing of the Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram Passenger here on Friday.
According to witnesses, train no 56307 went off the track as it was departing for Thiruvananthapuram from platform 3 in the morning.
incident occurred owing to the alleged negligence of the loco pilot who forgot to remove the metal obstacle that is usually placed between the track and wheel of parked locomotives as a preventive measure.
According to Railways authorities, the derailment did not affect the operations of other trains.
The Passenger train resumed journey after the coaches were attached to another engine. The derailed engine was put back on track by a team from Thiruvananthapuram. There were no causalities.
The heavy downpour in Thiruvananthapuram resulted in disruption of rail and road traffic on Wednesday.
Rail traffic was affected as landslips occurred at two spots in the capital; one at Valiyasala near the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station and another near Amayizhanjan canal.  Following this, nine trains were fully cancelled and 12 were partially cancelled on Wednesday. According to Railway officials, the works to restore the train traffic were completed by 10 am on Wednesday morning. Railway tracks at the Central Railway station were also damaged in waterlogging.
The trains which were fully cancelled
were: Venad Express (16302/16301), Janshatabdi Express (12076/12075), Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram passenger (56307), Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil passenger (56311), Nagercoil -Kochuveli passenger (56318), Kochuveli- Nagercoil passenger (56317), Nagercoil-Kochuveli passenger (56310), Kollam-Kanyakumari MEMU (66304), Kanyakumari-Kollam MEMU (66305).
The partially cancelled trains were: Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi Kerala Express (12625); Madurai-Punalur passenger trains (56700/56701), Thiruvananthapuram- Chennai Express (12696), Thiruvananthapuram -Mangalapuram  Malabar Express (16629), Thiruvananthapuram - Mangalapuram  Maveli Express (16604), Nagercoil-Mangalapuram Express (16650), Nagercoil-Kottayam Passenger (56304), Bangalore-Kochuveli Express (16315), Palakkad -Thiruvananthapuram Amrita Express (16344), Ernakulam - Thiruvananthapram Vanchinad Express (16303), Guruvayur- Thiruvananthapuram Intercity Express (16341), Mumbai-Kanyakumari express (16381).
As train traffic was affected, KSRTC operated additional services on six routes.
Over half-a-dozen landslips and flooding of tracks in and around Thiruvananthapuram Central following heavy rain in the capital on Wednesday crippled train services and caused hardships to commuters.
Services to and from the Nagercoil and Ernakulam sides had to be suspended from 4.15 a.m. following landslips near Valiyasala, Upidamoodu, and the Neyattinkara-Kuzhithurai section on the Nagercoil side.
Water overflowed from the clogged drain which runs underneath the tracks near the RMS. The tracks got flooded all of a sudden and Railways had to suspend operations from all the five platforms of the station.

Hundreds of passengers got stranded as the main entry on the Thampanoor side remained waterlogged. Passengers used the Power House entry to access the station. But, the work on the Melepazhavangady flyover hampered the movement of the vehicles through the Power House road.
Services terminated
Railways terminated services to the Central station at Kochuveli, Murukkumpuzha, Kazhakuttom, Varkala, Kollam, and Kayamkulam stations and took up work on clearing the sludge at Valiyasala and Upidamoodu.
At both spots, 15 to 20 metres of land had caved in and onto the track. At Upidamoodu, the water from the Amizhanjan canal and the rainwater caused the damage. The retaining gave in to pressure and collapsed.
At Valiyasala, rainwater and water gushing out of sewerage lines caused the landslip. The water that gushed into the tracks swept away the metal. Railways deployed three earthmovers and 120 men to clear the debris.
Rail traffic was restored by 9.15 a.m. with the Gorakhpur Express leaving the station from platform five. Sabari Express and Kurla Express left from the same platform as tracks in the other four platforms remained submerged.
The single lane towards Nagercoil was also cleared and made operational after a through inspection. Railways operated the New Delhi-bound Kerala Express at 1.15 p.m. from Kochuveli. The KSRTC operated services to railway stations to the relief of stranded passengers.
Railway sources said the work on strengthening the wall at both places had commenced. Railways had taken up the sewerage line issue at Valiyasala with the Kerala Water Authority as the stretch was prone to landslips.
