Press Release No. 292 Dt. 19.11.2019

SUPPLY - RS.84.4 CR. FUEL SAVED ANNUALLY

In a new environmentally-friendly initiative, Indian Railway has cut down on its fuel bills by introducing HOG (Head-on-Generation) technology on trains. on South Western Railway (SWR) HOG technology has been introduced so far in 10 pairs of trains on its network having LHB coaches and hauled by electric traction.
The HOG technology is being implemented in trains running with LHB coaches and caters to the power needs of coaches such as air-conditioning and lighting. Earlier two power cars known as end on generators (EOG) were attached to the trains to generate poser for providing air conditioning lighting in coaches. These power cars emit fumes and noise pollution was upto 105 decibel. These power cars are being replaced with the new HOG technology on LHB coaches. The new HOG system works by distributing the power to trailing coaches by tapping the overhead power lines. The HOG technology does not require any diesel oil consumption, hence reducing air and noise pollution. The technology will also provide uninterrupted illumination in the coaches. In place of power coaches additional coaches will be augmented were additional berths will be available for passengers every day.
With the introduction of HOG technology in the first phase of conversion SWR is saving on diesel fuel for the 10 pairs of trains introduced. Shri Ajay Kumar Singh, GM SWR zone has informed that the average savings of fuel per trip, per train is Rs.3.5 lakhs and annual savings for the 10 pairs of trains works out to Rs.88.4 Cr.
In the first phase, 10 pairs of trains have been converted into HOG technology having LHB coaches and running end-to-end with electric traction facility. The list of trains which have been converted to HOG technology on SWR are as follows:

Passengers delighted over the sturdy and stylish Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches on Lalbagh Express launched last week have now turned irate as the reality of a reduction effected in the number of general compartment coaches has begun impacting them. Nearly 100 passengers stormed the Krishnarajapuram Station Manager’s room on Wednesday morning demanding additional coaches and the Railways has now conceded to their demand.
An average of 2,000 passengers take the Lalbagh Express to Chennai. It departs at 6.15 am and reaches its destination in 5 hours and 45 minutes. On September 5, it had its maiden run with all its 15 regular coaches (ICF) replaced with LHB ones — for the first time since its launch in July 1992.

According to a highly placed Railway source, passengers rushed into the Station Master’s room at 7 am. “This was just after the departure of Lalbagh Express (Train No. 12608). They were shouting that unreserved passengers are boarding the reserved compartments citing lack of space in the new general coaches. The passengers insisted they be provided accommodation in an alternative train,” he said. The protestors also refused to allow the Station Manager to carry out any of his work for some time unless the problem was sorted out, the source added.
Asked about the issue, Divisional Railway Manager, Ashok Kumar Verma, told TNIE that due to demands made by passengers, the Bengaluru Railway Division will add two more unreserved coaches to the existing train composition from September 16. “Passengers at Krishnarajapuram were upset this morning. In addition to that, some have also raised the issue on social media pointing out the difficulties faced by general compartment passengers owing to the reduced number of coaches,” Verma said. The train has a composition of two AC Chair coaches, 11 regular coaches and 2 general coaches.

Yet another example of Gen ticket holders being inconvenienced after conversion of a train to LHB. Why cannot railways really look into this aspect and continue with the same coach composition? Not sure if they are expecting more passengers to travel with reservation ??
Though safety is important, it should not come at the cost of passenger comfort & convenience. At the end it is the reserved passsengers also who cannot travel in peace as all gen ticket holders get into these compartments due to lack of space.
