CRS (Southern Circle) is scheduled to conduct the inspection of the track between Mangaluru and Jokatte between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday.
The 13-km electrified stretch between Mangaluru Junction and Jokatte Railway Station under Southern Railway is all set for inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on December 27 and the days are not far when trains are hauled by electric locos till Kumta under Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.
Upon the CRS certifying the tracks till KRCL border between Jokatte and Thokur to be fit for operation of
electric loco-hauled trains, the stretch up to at least Kumta would be ready to take electric loco-hauled trains.
KRCL has completed electrification of the line between Thokur and Bijur (105 km), while work on the line between Bijur and Kumta (75 km) is in the final stages of completion. Kumta station has three lines with loco reversal facility.
As such, loco change from electric to diesel for onward journey towards Mumbai is possible at that station, according to KRCL officials.
CRS (Southern Circle), K.A. Manoharan is scheduled to conduct the inspection of the track between Mangaluru and Jokatte between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday. A speed trial run would be conducted on the section during the inspection and Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division has cautioned the general public not to approach the railway line during the period.
Southern Railway has spent ₹ 20 crore for the electrification of the 13.147 route km or 25.429 track km line between Mangaluru Junction and Jokatte being taken up by its construction wing. While work on the 110 kV substation at Jokatte has been completed, Southern Railway is awaiting energising of the line by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd.
Mangaluru Junction-Jokatte electrification was part of the Shoranur-Mangaluru (328 km) electrification project. With the completion of work, the line right from Thiruvananthapuram till KRCL border at Thokur gets electrified. Electric loco-hauled goods and passenger trains are already running between Mangaluru Junction/ Mangaluru Central towards the South, including Chennai, with the first electric loco-hauled train running from Mangaluru Central on April 1, 2017 (Train No 12686, Mangaluru Central-Chennai Central Superfast Express).
Passengers travelling between the Karnataka coast and Mumbai by the Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction-Mumbai CSMT Superfast Express (Train 12133/12134) have urged the Railways to make a rake-sharing arrangement for the train with the Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express (12685/12686).
This, according to many passengers, will ensure that the Mangaluru Junction-Mumbai CSMT Express starts at the right time — 1.55 p.m. — and reaches Mumbai at the scheduled time — 4.25 a.m. — the next day. The Mumbai CSMT-Mangaluru Junction Express, which should arrive at Mangaluru Junction at 1.10 p.m., generally arrives with an average delay of 45 minutes, thereby delaying its return journey.
public concern over the issue, National Railway Users’ Consultative Council member Kunjal Venkatesh Kini has written to the Divisional Manager of Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division, urging him to introduce an arrangement of sharing rakes between the two services. Because of the delayed departure of CSMT Express, the travelling public is affected a lot as the train reaches Mumbai late, he noted.
Mr. Kini also noted such an arrangement between the Mumbai LTT-Mangaluru Central-Mumbai LTT Matsyagandha Express (12619/12620) and the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Mangaluru Central-Thiruvana- nthapuram Central (16347/16348) wasworking excellently, with no delay in operations on both sides.
Extension to Central
For such an arrangement between the Mumbai and Chennai trains, the CSMT Express has to be extended to Mangaluru Central, Mr. Kini noted, adding that there was availability of platforms at Central for receiving and despatching the train.
Mr. Kini also said that the Chennai-Mangaluru Central Express arrives at Central at 9.05 a.m. and the rake remains idle till 4.15 p.m., which is the train’s departure time. The CSMT-Mangaluru Express could be made to arrive at Central at 2.25 p.m., considering the regular delayed arrival of 45 minutes. The rake then may be used to operate the Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central Express (12686) at 4.15 p.m.
Meanwhile, the rake of the MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Express (12685) that arrives at Central at 9.05 a.m. may be used to operate the Mangaluru Central-Mumbai CSMT Express, leaving Central at 1.30 p.m. and Junction at 1.55 p.m., Mr. Kini suggested.
During the monsoon timetable, when trains are operated at lower speeds on the Konkan Railway network, the CSMT Express may be despatched from Central at 2.40 p.m., instead of the scheduled 4.45 p.m., to reach Mumbai at 8.30 a.m. with the Chennai Express rake, Mr. Kini suggested.

⏺️You might be right regarding changing the departure time of this train to 20:00 instead of 22:00 at CSMT. I don't have proper idea regarding this train

20:00 departure is not possible. A semi-fast local leaves CSMT at 20:00. It is chased by 20:10 leaving 12111 AMI exp, followed by 20:15 leaving NGP Duronto, followed by 20:25 leaving 17411 Mahalaxmi, followed by 20:35 departing 12809 HWH Mail. During this period, 12163 DR-MS leaves DR at 20:30 and 12151 group of trains leaves LTT at 20:35. This continues till very much 22:00. One train after another within a gap of just 10-15 mins. After TNA-DIWA new lines are commissioned, there will be some leg room to tweak the time table.

Trains originating DR may not use PF 5. Over a decade back, they had tried the idea by starting some special trains from PF 5 but never after that. Over crowding was sited as the reason. Presently, trains arrive and depart from PF 5 almost till 00:30 (last being 10193). 12133 actually skips Dadar. If started from PNVL, it could readily be a 24 coacher, and chase ERS Duronto all the way till MAJN. Under present scenario, it will remain the way it is till TNA-DIWA new lines are commissioned.

12133/34 can be handed over to SR with modified timings as follows:
CSMT - 18:00 MAQ - 09:00
MAQ - 20:00 CSMT - 11:00
Rake can be maintained at MAQ, number of coaches can be increased & rake will occupy pit line in Mumbai for short time as compared to current scenario.

Two coaches of the Chennai-Mangalore Superfast Express derailed near Shoranur in Kerala on Tuesday morning, disrupting rail traffic.
Railway sources said there were no casualties.
The mishap occurred around 6.30 AM near Shoranur station.
Two bogies -- a luggage-cum-brake van and parcel van -- behind the engine derailed. One of the derailed bogies hit an electric post, near the track, damaging it.
train services on three directions-- Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru and Palakkad -- have been affected. However, services through a bypass route between Thrissur and Palakkad have not been hit.
Efforts are on to restore train services as early as possible, the sources added.
