Hyderabad: Major trains from the city heading to destinations in different parts of the country are all set to chug with modern coaches following the decision of South Central Railway (SCR) to do away with the present old coaches. As part of the SCR move, coaches in trains such as Hyderabad–New Delhi Telangana Express, Lingampalli – Tirupati Narayandri Express and Kacheguda–Mysuru-Kacheguda Express will soon be replaced with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches.
LHB is the German company and under transfer of its technology, the coaches are being manufactured at Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala.According to SCR officials, Indian Railways has taken a major step in modernising its fleet by replacing the conventional coaches in a phased manner with LHB coaches. They are being designed

to ensure safe travel and higher passenger capacity with operating speed of up to 160 km per hour.Officials pointed out that conventional coaches have limitations in terms of speed potential, heavy corrosion, poor riding experience and insufficient retardation during emergency brake application.LHB coaches are manufactured with anti-climbing feature in coupler which helps in safety of passengers in case of unforeseen incidents. They have wheel slide protection and fire retardant materials, controlled by computer system.Already, a total of 14 trains in the SCR including Hyderabad-Jaipur-Hyderabad Express, Secunderabad-Kurnool City Tungabhadra Express and Lingmapalli-Vijayawada Intercity Express are running with LHB coaches and all the important trains in a phased manner would be replaced with new coaches. In the LHB coaches, seating capacity has been enhanced from 1,800 seats in sleeper class, AC coaches and unreserved compartments to 2,000 seats as the coaches are two meter longer than regular coaches and all the 24 coaches have been incorporated with anti-skid PVC flooring.“These coaches are equipped with large windows offering good view outside, luggage racks with in-built reading lamps, insulation against noise and a smooth interior. They are fitted with environment friendly bio-toilets and comfortable chairs are designed with reclining backrest”, a senior official said.A key feature of LHB coaches happens to be that they do not get turned over or flip in case of a collision and have axle mounted disc brakes for efficient braking at higher speeds and ensures safety of passengers in case of derailment. In the past, LHB coaches were only seen in Shatabdhi Express and Rajdhani Express which head to New Delhi. With railways taking this initiative of inducting such coaches in other trains, travelling in trains will be more convenient for passengers in the coming days, officials added.

The Mysuru-KSR-Kacheguda Express finally chugged into Kacheguda around 2.30 pm on Saturday, a good 24 hours after it departed from Mysuru. The scheduled arrival was 5.40 am.
The nightmare experienced by nearly 2,000 passengers on Friday night is not something they will forget soon. After being stranded on the railway tracks near Channasandra railway station for over three hours after two AC bogies uncoupled, passengers on board Train No 12786 were relieved when the train finally started moving at 10.15 pm to two different destinations to carry out repair works. Little did they know more misery was in store for them.
Passengers

on board 16 coaches of the train were taken to Baiyappanahalli railway station and made to alight there before the train moved to its yard to remove a damaged AC coach. Two new AC coaches were attached there. Those in the remaining eight coaches were taken to Channasandra railway station for the other damaged AC coach to be removed.
Among the hundreds of people left to fend for themselves after 10.30 pm at Baiyappanahalli railway station was Shiva Krishna. “With insufficient chairs, most passengers were seated on the platform floors. The few toilets available were locked. Two stalls selling bottled water ran out of stock. Though the railway taps had water, many passengers were not willing to take a risk by drinking them,” he told The New Indian Express.
Another passenger Vishnu Priya asked, “Why were no basic arrangements made? Many women, including myself, really suffered without washrooms. Some passengers walked over 1 km outside the station to buy water or food for their families.”
Instead of heading to Kacheguda to attend his friend’s daughter’s wedding, senior citizen K Jayasimha Rao opted to leave the station, take an auto and go back home to Cooke Town. “I heard from other passengers that the train might reach Kacheguda only on Saturday afternoon. There was no point in reaching after the wedding, so I went back home,” he said.
Some passengers were spotted heading to Baiyappanahalli Metro station to get back to the city before the Metro services closed, said a railway official.
Meanwhile, at the Channasandra station, over 500 passengers opted to sit inside the compartments for nearly seven hours rather than at the station which also lacked facilities. A software engineer Venkatesh Narulu found himself in a bizarre situation. “When the train stopped on tracks for a long time, my friend and I walked out of the station with our luggage to look for food nearby. When we came back to the spot, there was no train! My coach had gone with one half of the train to Baiyappanahalli. A railway staffer told me to walk upto Channasandra station and sit in one of the air conditioned coaches. However, when I reached there, I saw that the AC had been shut off and passengers inside were struggling,” he said.
‘Where is trouble shooting by railways?’
Retired Regional Manager from LIC, Hyderabad, K Jayasimha Rao is indignant over passengers helping a few railway employees to clear the debris on the tracks caused by a toilet that had been ripped off a coach. “It weighed around 4 to 5 tonnes and had blocked the tracks. So much time was lost in trying to remove if off the tracks physically. There appears to be no trouble shooting at all on the part of Railways. Imagine if someone had been seated on the toilet of the train which fell onto the track, or if the damage had been more. Then, lives would have definitely been lost,” he added.

Kacheguda Express coaches detach, split into 2
BENGALURU: Nearly 2,000 passengers on board the Mysuru-KSR Bengaluru-Kacheguda Superfast Express escaped a major mishap when two AC coaches uncoupled, splitting the train into two portions late Friday evening, near Channasandra railway station, nearly 14km from KSR Bengaluru City Station. All passengers escaped unhurt. Since the Baiyappanahalli-Channasandra stretch is a single line, four trains suffered major delays.
In an unprecedented incident, coaches B1 and B2 uncoupled totally with a major jerk at 7.06pm, and the tank of the bio-toilet in B1 completely caved in, bringing the train

to a grinding halt, 46 minutes after leaving Bengaluru City. The train got separated, with eight bogies and the engine on one end, and 16 bogies on the other side. While the loco-pilot pressed the brakes of the front portion, an in-built automated braking system ensured the rear end of the train came to a halt.

The 24-coach train, which was extended to depart from Mysuru from last month, left at 2.45pm and reached Bengaluru at 6.20pm. It crossed Cantonment and Baiyappanahalli without any hitch, and was approaching Channasandra Railway Station when the mishap occurred. Many senior railway officials admitted that they had never seen something like this happen in South Western Railway Zone.
A top official conceded that this was much more than a decoupling. “If it had been decoupling, it could have been attached easily. That happens sometimes. However, in this case, it looks like the entire coupling set gave way. The coaches can only be removed from the train and fully redone,” he said.Top railway officials were at a loss to explain what exactly happened, and if railway staff meant to take care of train maintenance were responsible for it.
“An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. It is too premature to comment on it,” said Divisional Railway Manager of Bengaluru Railway Division, R S Saxena. Hundreds of passengers alighted from the train and were hanging around the tracks after dark, waiting for it to restart. The two halves of the trains were later steered to Baiyappanahalli and Channasandra stations for the damaged coaches to be removed, and new AC coaches to be attached at Baiyappanahalli, and was likely to restart its journey to Kacheguda well after midnight.
