Nagpur: With Indian economy reeling under severe slowdown, Central Railway (CR) too has been hit with fears that it may not be able to achieve its set targets.
For 2019-20, the Railway Board had set a target of over 66 million tonnes for CR comprising Nagpur, Pune, Solapur, Mumbai and Bhusawal divisions.
“Though all out efforts are being taken to achieve the target from various sources, we would be able to reach 63 million tonnes, the target which was set last year. Coal loading has gone down affecting our goals,” said general manager

Sanjeev Mittal.
Mittal was all praise for Nagpur division by improving passenger amenities and increasing non-fare revenue by 137%.
Mittal, who was on a maiden inspection visit between Badnera and Nagpur on Friday, told newsmen, “Prolonged monsoon also dented our freight and passenger revenue. We lost Rs243 crore towards passenger earnings during the deluge, which hit our track capacity, especially in Mumbai.”
On steps being taken to decongest busy sections, the general manager said, “If all goes well, the 19km third line between Butibori and Sindi will open soon. The commissioner, railway safety, AK Jain, will inspect the new line on Saturday.”
Line capacity between the 76km Nagpur-Wardha section has reached 140% and third and fourth line is need of the hour. “We are working on both the lines and these lines will be operational by March 2023,” said Mittal.
On third line between Nagpur and Itarsi, Mittal said there were some hiccups which have now been removed and that project too will be launched soon.
To a question on running broad gauge metro trains for which an MoU has been signed between CR and MahaMetro, Mittal said, “MahaMetro had prepared a DPR on which the Railway Board had sought our comments. MahaMetro will provide coaches to us. The plan is to run trains between Nagpur and Wardha. However, it will not be possible to run these trains in this section as there is already too much congestion.”
On Ajni to be developed as a multi-modal hub, Mittal said NHAI is investing Rs1,400 crore in the Rs2,800 crore project. Railway is losing land worth Rs1,400 crore. “We have approved relocation plans and NHAI has also floated some tenders,” said Mittal.
On diversion of originating trains from Nagpur to other divisions, Mittal said, “Even if it’s done, the trains have to pass through Nagpur.”
CR plans to extend Nagpur-Mumbai Sevagram Express to Chhindwara. However, DRM Somesh Kumar said, “In case if it is done, it will be after completion of broad gauge between Itwari-Chhindwara.”
The mail/express trains are being converted into LHB coaches which have a speed of 120 kmph, but Nagpur division is operating these trains at 110 kmph. Mittal said, “Though our section has speed limit of 120 kmph, it is the CRS which takes call on increasing the speed.”
On a new train between Nagpur-Goa, Mittal said, “The proposal is pending with the Railway Board.”
