and to add to it e-ticket can be booked upto charting
where as i-ticket booking closes 2-3 days prior to date of journey to give time for the post to reach your home

E-Ticket
An e-ticket can be booked up to the time of chart preparation for your train. To book an e-ticket on Internet at Irctc Website you have to enter your ID proof details like PAN Card, Voter’s ID card, Passport, Ration Card, Central/State Govt. ID Card or Driving License. After booking just take a printout of the Electronic Reservation Slip and carry it during travel with the ID proof. Correction: E-ticket: No entry of ID proof is required at the time of booking. If you get the booking message in the mobile sent to its mobile no indicated by you when booking the ticket, no printout is required.Just show the message and ID proof to the TTE.This is the green initiative of IR.Warning: now all passengers travelling by AC class must carry identity proof. This is to discourage touts and also as an antiterrorist measure.
