Shalimar is just fine. Instead, the state should provide better transport, security, and roads towards SHM. Howrah and Sealdah need to be decongested and for that development of new terminals should be emphasized. Shalimar now has much better transport facilities than it had 10 years ago, simply due to more trains that bring more passengers.
Land belong to Railway. Shalimar goods yard is side by side the passenger complex(unlike at Howrah, goods yard is separated from passenger complex). Entry road to SHM is very narrow & confusing. My uncle who used to work in Shalimar Goods yard, died due to an accident there. Goods crane mowed my uncle down, leading to death on spot.
Fencing off the goods yard from the passenger complex needs to be undertaken, and construction of the parking lots by the railways ASAP. Pre-paid taxi counters, Howrah city police personnel should be there to check overcharging by the taxi divers, and the transport department of the state govt must facilitate more bus routes to connect Shalimar from different areas of Kolkata and Howrah and Exide More. The approach from the Vidyasagar setu should be improved, widening the roads etc. With these measures expedited, Shalimar will become a good alternative to Howrah. Now that trains are arriving at Shalimar, we can expect the development of the station area to happen. Remember, if more trains reach SHM, more passengers will come, and the taxi and bus operators will find plying to the station viable. If we first wait for the bus routes and taxi services to come first at the station, trust me,... more...
no bus or taxi will be willing to go there empty. It is like a "who came first, a chicken or an egg" situation.
