MUMBAI: Forty Central Railway suburban services were cancelled and 70 others delayed after commuters staged a rail roko and forced the station manager to sit on the tracks at Titwala station on Wednesday morning. The commuters were upset as a Thane-Asangaon train had been delayed due to an extended maintenance block. In August too, services on CR had been stalled following a similar agitation at Badlapur station.
On Wednesday , CR had undertaken a maintenance block for repairs of overhead equipment between 3.35am and 4.40am. However, the block had to be extended due to a defect in the circuit-breakers, delaying the Thane-Asangaon train. Angered by the delay , commuters got down on the tracks at Titwala station and blocked trains.

CR spokesperson said, "The block ended at 5.56am. The protest began at 6.10am and lasted till 8.55pm. During this period, Kasara-, Asangaonand Titwala-bound services ran only up to Kalyan and back. Special services were run from Kalyan to CST."
CR's divisional railway manager Ravinder Goyal said, "The protest is unjustified as it only prolonged the hardship for commuters."
The authorities had to call Railway Police Force, Government Railway Police and elected representatives to bring the situation under control."Forty services were cancelled, nine partially cancelled and 70 delayed because of the agitation," Goyal said.
Commuters justified the protest saying that they had been getting a `raw deal' for long and that the `railways has been trying their patience'.
"The railways always holds up suburban services and gives priority to express trains and freight traffic on this stretch. This has become routine and suburban services are delayed by nearly 20 minutes every day . Locals end up reaching their destinations late every day," said Shyam Ubale, member of the Kalyan Kasara railway association.
Central Railway officials said that commuters have started using agitation as a tool to demand services, especially after authorities agreed to halt fast locals at Diva following similar protests.
An official said, "The system is already saturated and we are compromising on maintenance so that commuters are not inconvenienced."
