There is an old adage in English saying All roads lead to Rome. In the present instance, it was a case of all roads leading to Chennai, as a group of 9 ardent railfans, consisting of 8 Admins and 1 ex-Admin from IRI, converged at the southern metropolis of Chennai for a mission extraordinaire.
If the visit to the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works by a group of 4 Admins in July 2012 was sheer ecstasy, as so appropriately characterized by Admin BG, the expedition to the Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, by a team of 9 members from the IRI Community, on 30th October, may well be described as the equivalent of a railfan's journey to paradise. To take the comparison further, if the trip to CLW was like nectar for mortals, the ICF outing may be likened to ambrosia for the Gods.

Come early morning at 7 am on Tuesday the 30th October, the outlook in Chennai was gloomy and forbidding with persistent drizzles and intermittent showers. But not even the impending cyclone Neelam could dampen the indomitable spirits of Sabyasachi Ghosh, Souvik Sarkar (Wrik), Dipyaman Basu, Pramodh Kommatil and yours truly (PKV). Courtesy Pramodh, we boarded a call taxi from Pramodh's pad at Ikkunthangal, a suburb of Chennai, where we had stayed overnight, and reached Chennai Central at about 7.45 am. Mark you, the first two, Sabya and Wrik, had arrived at Egmore only the previous night, at 8 pm, by Howrah-Trichy Express, on a 26-hour visit from Kolkata, merely for the purpose of the ICF show. I cannot envisage a more lofty tribute to the enthusiasm of a railfan than this gesture of theirs.
At Central station, we were soon joined by 4 more members of the entourage viz. Dr. Nazeer from Coimbatore, Tejas and Suresh Sirvi from Bangalore and Amjad Khan from Tada. After a quick breakfast at the all-time favourite Saravana Bhawan, we dispensed with the plans to board the EMU local to Villivakam en route to ICF Perambur, in view of the heavy rains. However, the approaching cyclonic depression in the Bay of Bengal could not play spoilsport and thwart our programme. Once again, courtesy Pramodh, our local guardian, 2 call taxis were arranged and the 9 of us reached SBI, ICF Perambur branch, at 10 am, merely 30 mns behind schedule.
The role of the local branch of SBI and its branch manager, Ms. Renuka merits an explanation. She was the focal point of contact and donned the role of a facilitator for the entire ICF visit of ours. it was only because of her kind initiative that the authorities there agreed to a visit by a large group, setting a limitation of 10 persons.
The composition of the group was by invitation and finalised as early as in August. However, as D-Day approached, there were as many as 3 drop-outs. Saikat Ghosh (due to the unfortunate demise of his mother), Vijayaditya (due to work-related preoccupations) and Shashank Bhatt (a last-minute victim of dengue) were the losers. The gainers were Suresh Sirvi, Amjad Khan and Sai Jinendra, although the last-named could not ultimately make it because of the inclement weather. Consequently, the size of the group was pruned to 9.
(to be contd..........)
PS. I request the other members of the group to share their experiences in this thread even before i can post the continuing parts of my opening post.

When I was Kid I was thinking that Shock-Observers between coaches are Magnetic and are Responsible for Holding attach between Coaches. As years passed I came to know about Coupling and all related things. Yesterday I came to know how they Assemble every part to become it a Coach. I'm Thankful to you Sir for Inviting me.

ICF VISIT (PART II)
We reached the ICF Administrative Office at about 11 am and being a Govt. organization, there were formalities galore to be complied with, which included deposit of xerox copies of ID cards of all 9 visitors. I received the assistance of Mr. Radhakrishnan, their Protocol Officer in completing them. However as we were about to enter the factory, it was discovered that the entry permit did not bear the initial of one particular Inspector of the RPF. So it was back again to the RPF outpost for obtaining the missing AUTOGRAPH and that consumed another 15 mns. Finally at about 11.45 am the decks were finally cleared for the commencement of our factory visit. The programme began with a visit to the SHELL SECTION and then lunch at the ICF Canteen. The post-lunch activities consisted of the visit

to the FURNISHING SECTION and the RAIL MUSEUM. It all ended with a visit to the office of the PRO for collecting photographs of the factory and the coaches manufactured there.
Unfortunately, due to pressure of work, Pramodh, who had ably managed to lead us to the factory, despite hostile weather conditions, had to leave by about 12.30 pm, to attend to the urgent call of duties at his office. So it was with a heavy heart that we were constrained to let him part company with us, even as the tempo was just picking up.
The details of the visit will be shared with you in elaborate details by Tejas and other members of the group and I shall resist the temptation to pre-empt or duplicate their efforts.
But I will be failing in my duties if I did not make a mention of my gratitude to the ICF authorities in general and Mr. Dileep Bag, Mr. Deendayalan and Mr. Radhakrishnan in particular for making our trip UNFORGETTABLE. All of us shall CHERISH THE MEMORIES for a long long time to come.
My acknowledgment to SBI and Ms. Renuka for making this DREAM COME TRUE.
Our indebtedness to IRI and the MODERATOR for providing us with an ideal PLATFORM to come together and enjoy the pleasure of experiencing the bliss of railfanning in a variety of ways.
Last but not the least, kudos to all those who participated in the trip with unalloyed enthusiasm and missionary zeal. I liked the way everyone responded magnificently to the leadership of Pramodh and rallied round him in the most adverse of weather conditions, to make the ICF VISIT an ENVIABLE and UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS.

Dreams are an obscure form of mind where we tend to hallucinate things, imagine what is dearer to us in any forum possible and tend to cherish it us with our eyes of imagination. But when the same dreams seem to get realized in our life, there seems to be nothing more sweeter than it.
It was with the zeal and enthusiasm of all the like minded people namely Mr. Pramodh, Mr. Nazeer, Mr. Tejas, Mr. Suresh Sirvi, Mr. Sabyasachi, Mr. Wrik, Mr. Amjad me and the heart and soul of IRI PKV Sir made our way to realize our dreams to one of the pioneering rail coach factories in India, ICF Perambur - Chennai.

fun and ecstasy. The journey started off with me taking the Chennai Mail with Pramodh Sir after much deliberations, altercations and manipulations with myself and with Indian Railways. I finally succeeded to book a Current 1st AC Ticket for Mail after my Tatkal Ticket for 3rd AC - Mail and 2nd AC Ticket for Kaveri - General did not confirm.
Pramodh Sir, as the gracious host and a nice and kind hearted man he has always been had made prior arrangements for some of us to be accommodated in the lodge where he stays in Chennai. Even though Pramodh Sir may not like this but I have never seen such a gracious host beside being a down to earth person like Pramodh Sir.
The day followed with Sabyasachi Sir and Wrik Sir arriving at Egmore by Howrah - Trichy Express and PKV Sir making it from Bangalore by Shatabdi. Pramodh Sir accompanied them from Egmore and it was much like a reunion of old and good friends.
The night was spend indulging in some friendly as well as technical discussions. We had to sleep early as the ICF Trip was scheduled at 9 and we had quite some distance to travel.
We woke up the next day and made way to Central Station to receive Nazeer Sir, Amjad Sir, Tejas Sir and Suresh Sir. Vijayaditya Sir and Shashank Sir could not make it to Chennai due to their personal and health problems respectively. Sai Jinendra Sir, the man who surprises us with some of his PNR's getting confirmed from nowhere was also supposed to join us but couldn't due to the adverse weather and some technical problem with his vehicle.
We had our breakfast at Saranya Bhavan, Central Station. After this we had to wait a bit as it was raining heavily like cats and dogs but alas we didn't mind to do that as we were all surrounded by the beautiful engines and trains as well as accompanied with our own IRI Family.
--- To be Continued.

*********** ICF TRIP REPORT **********

*********** **********
PART 1
It was around 11 am that we were dropped off at the ICF main block what looked to me as the main administrative section of the ICF at Perambur . After getting all necessary clearances from the hierarchy, we were lead to the SHELL DIVISION where the PRO introduced us to Mr. Dilip who is an employee at the ICF.
...
The man was oozing out with loads of enthusiasm right from the moment he met us at the entrance of the highly secured SHELL DIVISION.
We were no less enthusiastic either, with the idly-wada-filter coffee combination in our tummies already working its magic.
He first led us to the stores division which had all the raw materials required for the latter stages in the production of a coach. We knew that ICF perambur has a space crunch, and this belief was proved right when we saw a fair amount of raw materials and other parts stored outside.Mr Dilip informed us that ICF was designed to produce around 400 coaches per annum, and this was the number it first produced during its baby years. Now the figure stands at 1600 and that’s not it, the target for the next year is 1700.Considering the limited space and technology that’s available(or rather made available), these numbers are indeed mind boggling.
Coming back to the guided tour(?), After passing through the stores division which took about 20 minutes, we were in the SPRING DIVISION. This as the name suggests manufactures the springs , those black colored helical shaped which we see beneath the coach. The steel for this, we were informed , is procured by Tata Steel and SAIL. Not too far off from this place is the SHEET METAL SHOP which as the name suggests cuts and shapes different shapes and sizes from huge sheets of the metal.
To be continued.....

PART II
.
Right next to the SHEET METAL SHOP is the HUGE workshop where the process of BODY MANUFACTURING takes place. As shown in the attached flow chart, in technical terms, the BODY consists of the SIDEWALLS, END WALLS, ROOF AND UNDER FRAME. This workplace is a MASSIVE structure measuring some 20 coaches in length and some 9-10 coaches in width. There was also some construction happening at one end to expand their production capabilities. Mr. Dilip was with us explaining with great keenness and where ever possible he requested his colleagues in the BODY workshop to explain us the detailed process of that particular shop. After this the group headed to the BOGIE WORKSHOP which is relatively smaller than the body workshop. This is where the all

important testing of the bogie is done before being attached to the SHELL produced from the body workshop, at the FINAL ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP , to form a COACH.
One interesting thing to note is the fact that ICF does manufacture LHB coaches although very small in number(30-40). We did see some of these, details of which will be shared in the next part.
.
With this our tour of the SHELL DIVISION came to an end .The time was 1.45 pm and Mr Dilip made us sprint towards the canteen located in the administrative block so as to reach there before the designated 2 pm closing time. This canteen is heavily subsidized akin to our parliament’s canteen. A heavy, tasty meal for 9 of us didn’t cross the 3 figure mark.
.
To be continued with the report of FURNISHING DIVISION, something which I personally think was the best part of the visit.

PART III
.
After the meal, it was time to visit the FURNISHING DIVISION which is located around 3 kms from the SHELL DIVISION.Mr Dilip was kind enough to accompany us to that section and it is here that we were introduced to Mr Deenadayalan. Like his counterpart from the SHELL DIVISION, this man too was forth coming to share his knowledge. After spending a few minutes with him, I was reminded of my school and college days where we often heard from our teachers and lecturers” Any doubt, pls ask’’, ‘’ pls ask me if you have any questions’’. The situation was no less different here except that Mr Deenadayalan had to deal with a 62 year old inquisitive, young student. :)
...

We were then taken to the humongous ASSEMBLY SHED which had about 12 lines and exceeded the length of a 24 coacher. This is where the core activities of the FURNISHING SECTION takes place. The work is divided into ten stages (attached pic). After coming out of the shell division, a coach under goes a series of painting at the PAINTING SHED. This includes primary painting which in this case was painting the shell with three layers of PATTI. After this, is the PREPARATORY SHOP.At this stage, a few checks and things to do are listed. After this is the FLOORING STAGE, where a high quality 15 mm high quality ply wood is installed. This is then followed by the WIRING DEPARTMENT which had the workers doing the difficult job of matching and plugging thousands of wires in right spots, or lakhs of wires as it seemed to a naked eye in case of an EMU. Then comes the PVC STAGE which I think is self explanatory. With the culmination of this stage, proper IR coach that we are so used to seeing takes shape.
