website had its humble beginning in the year 2007. We started initially with an aim to provide basic information of trains running on the Indian rail network, their schedules and providing a search option between two rail stations in a reader friendly format. We are proud of the fact that our first few followers were from countries like France, US, Germany and Japan and for a novice site like ours which had just started its affairs, there couldn’t be a bigger morale booster to make things better in the years to come. And Aug 2008 it was when we introduced forum based discussion and blogging to give a stable platform for all rail-fans to talk and learn more about their pet subject. The move proved to be a hit, with the forum attracting many keen rail enthusiasts. It proved to be a perfect, free flowing bee ground for all railfans to come together to share their pride in being part of this vast Indian Rail Network. When the first blog was posted in the forum, little did we realize then that this site would grow to such towering heights in a short span of 5 years. And it was no coincidence that the very first blog posted was ‘’ कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन’’ a Sanskrit saying which roughly translates into ‘’Perform your duty with a mind free from the anxieties of fruits of action.’’
Having no affiliations to the government owned websites, this independently run site(or fan-site as we like to call it) slowly and steadily started growing and today we are a family of more than 10 million users actively blogging from all across India and the world.
In late 2009, IRI introduced the concept of Admins (Administrators) who hail from various socio-economic backgrounds, speak different languages, belong to different diversities and are yet united primarily due to their common love for trains. Their participation is totally voluntary in nature much like all our members who more often than not accidently ‘bump’ into the website, then explore, and finally settle down to become an integral part of the site.
We, here at the site encourage feedback in any and all forms, take criticism in the right spirit and it is no secret that much of today’s features and attractions on IRI have started with one simple feedback or suggestion.
One of the site’s widely used features today is the PNR prediction which seeks to help that clueless traveler caught in the maze of ticket waiting-lists.
Since early 2010, the site is constantly introducing user friendly features for its members and with the ensuing feedbacks, the site has turned these into a compact and customized facet of IRI. The chain feature, the live atlas, travel/station tips etc are some of the popular features here. The site also boasts of a user friendly mobile website for the thousands of mobile and tablet users out there.
In June2014, IRI launched its RAILCAL app and was an instant hit. The site continues to strive hard to introduce more such apps at an early date.
What IRI today is predominantly due to the active participation of its members and admins. The site remains indebted to them and promises to continue providing the platform it has been putting up all these years.
