“The clamour for establishing a Vizag railway zone is sending wrong signals. Waltair division is part of the East Coast Railway with its headquarters in Bhubaneswar. Establishing the zonal headquarters near Guntur-Vijayawada will ensure better coordination with the government,” Rail Mazdoor Union additional secretary Avadhanula Ravi said.
The SCR zone has six divisions, which include Nanded, Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada. The proposed new zone will not have Nanded, Hyderabad and Secunderabad, as they are in Telangana.
According to Mr. Ravi, the headquarters of the new railway zone should be decided carefully after taking many factors into consideration. “We have 29 railway projects pending in the combined State, and many new proposals for the development of the new State are on the anvil to ensure better connectivity to ports and new industrial zones,” he said.
