" SOMETIMES, IF MANY THINGS CAN GO WRONG, ALL OF THEM WILL "
Not too sure, how many of you have heard of Murphy's Law, which runs thus " Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong ". An extreme form of this OBNOXIOUS law to which I was a recent victim, may be summed up as " If several things can go wrong, all of them will ". And this is how it all transpired.
My wife and I accompanied by our 3-year old grandson came to Coimbatore on a holiday on

3rd May. The little boy's parents were to join us there on the 6th and return with him to their base at Udupi on the 7th night. Their tickets from Mangalore to Coimbatore and back were booked by me, the family's so-called RAIL EXPERT.
Since they wanted to be back in Udupi via Mangalore on Sunday, the 8th, I booked tickets for them for journey from CBE to MAQ by 17606 Kacheguda-Mangalore Biweekly Express leaving CBE at 2 am on 7th May and reaching MAO at 11.10 the next day. Being a weekend, tickets were not available by any other train and only 2 sleeper class berths were available in this train. So I booked them at lightning speed before they too vanished. Before booking, I pinged my friend Pramodh Kommattil, on WA, and informed him about these travel plans. He enquired if I was booking for Santragachi-Mangalore Vivek Express and I mentioned to him that my preference was for KCG-MAQ Express. Of course I did not give him the details of the dates of travel etc. (contd....)

Re# 1856097-3
And then began a desperate search for tickets from CBE to MAQ for overnight trains. We even tried for availability by the early morning ICE from CBE but all our efforts were futile. Finally Nazeer zeroed in on 2 berths available in 3AC from Shoranur to Mangalore by 16347 TVC-MAQ Express departing from SRR at the unearthly hour of 4.05 am. I tried to get clearance from my son-in-law over phone for the revised travel plans but despite half a dozen calls he was not picking his mobile. In sheer desperation I asked Nazeer to go ahead with the booking and gave him my son-in-law's number for this purpose. And voila, a few minutes later, my son-in-law called as soon as he received the SMS from IRCTC. He asked me " Baba, what is all this ? ". In order to preserve my prestige as the family's RAIL ENCYCLOPEDIA, I could...

not let him be privy to my gaffe of booking for the wrong date. I brazenly told him that their train had got cancelled due to the derailment of the 12623 Chennai TVC Mail the previous day. And hence the need to book fresh tickets. He was apparently satisfied with my explanation but asked how they would be going to board the train at Shoranur. I told him that it would have to be by a UR bogie in any of the late night M/E trains from CBE or by bus. I assured him that it would not be much of a problem as the journey would take only 3/4 hours. He agreed reluctantly but then did not seem to have much of a choice. (BTW that was easier said than done with wife and a 3-year old kid)

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
