Dear friend, IR was back bone of Indian economy with majority its revenue more than the revenue from other sources. It had near monopoly over transport at the time of independence with 75% market share of national passenger traffic (90% of freight traffic). How ever, chronic mismanagement and political interference led to continuous erosion of its passenger traffic market share which is today as low as 10-20% (20-30% of freight traffic), with road sector (bus/other vehicles) snatching away majority of its market share.
