Interesting Facts About Thane You Must Know
1. Thane was the terminus for the first ever passenger train in Asia. On 16 April 1853, the passenger train service was inaugurated between CST and THANE.

The population of Thane according to the 2011 census is 1,886,941; Average literacy rate of Thane city is 91.36 percent of which male and female literacy was 94.19 and 88.14 percent.


3. Thane was ranked as the busiest railway station on the Mumbai suburban network, followed by Andheri and Kalyan. As of 2013, Thane railway station handles 650,000 people daily.


4. The portuguese came to Thane about 1530 and ruled for over 200 years till 1739. Thane was then known as Cacabe de Tana.

5. Thane station is the first station in Mumbai Suburban network to have escalators installed on two of its platforms. The escalators were inaugurated by Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik.

6. When the British captured the Fort and ruled Thane, then it was known as Tana. They made it the headquarters of the district administration with a district collector stationed in Thane.

7. In the Year 1774 Thane population crosses 9000. During That Period It was much higher than Other Connected Cities.

8. The famous St. Jon Baptist Church was built in the year 1663. It is one of the oldest churches In India.

9. The First Ever Electric railway line was built in 1926 on Kurla – Thane section. And in 1928 in was extended from thane to kalian.

10. The city has numerous historical buildings, including a fort and several churches. Best season to visit the city is from November to March.
