Sorry to see the highly inefficiency of platform management in HWH Station.If the station with 23 PFs have such condition,what will happen to other important stations with less no of platforms....???

Sir,I will explain in detail after a few mins..please be patient & kindly suggest accordingly that what should be the next step from Eastern Rly Authorities....I want all to actively participate in this decision .Because its the matter of pride for the greatest stations in India...!!

PFs 17-24 belong to SER and being of more recent origin were built longer to berth 24 coach trains. PF nos. 1 to 14 are of the old vintage when 24-coach trains were not even dreamt off. Hence they are presently inadequate. But yes other than 9,12,14 and possibly 8, the others are too short for the purpose. BTW PFs 1 to 5 and often 6 are used by EMU locals with 9/12 coaches.
An interesting tidbit is that even about 10 years ago, KING COROMANDEL used to depart from the OLD COMPLEX (PF 14) but arrive at the NEW COMPLEX (PF 18 TO 21). Passengers often found this arrangement very confusing causing people to nearly miss the outgoing train. Fortunately, better sense prevailed and this anomaly was rectified.

Sir,now I'll describe what was the situation in HWH on 27.11.2011,Sunday Morning,when I was there to recieve my parents who were arriving by 12346.The train generally arrives on PF #14.In the Enquiry board beside the 1st Class Waiting Hall,it was written that the train will arrive @ 06.10.By 06.05,it was displayed,train crossed Liluah & @ 06.10,display shown,Train O/S.So,I was pretty assured that the train may arrive by any time after the announcement.by the mean time,11447,which arrived HWH @ 04.10 in the morning,was still parked @ PF#6 till 06.05 & 12308,which arrived @ 05.10,was there in PF#9,was moved to pit line only after 06.45.That Day 12274(NDLS Duronto) was running 50 mts late,13006 was delayed by 30 mts,15960 by 5 Hrs,12312 by 6 Hrs,13010 by 1 Hr,12174 by 1 Hr,12334 by 15 mts...So 12346 should have got entry by 06.25 at least as there was no train to occupy PF#14,13 & 12.12352...

was also written O/S by that time.Still the train was made to halt @ HWH outer for more than 1 Hr to enter only at 07.20.Now think if the above mentioned trains on that day was on time,then Saraighat would have been further delayed.Isnt it a mismanagement.First of all,you dont have enough platforms to accomodate 24 coachers(which is the demand for every train now-a-days),then if platforms are available also,you're not utilizing them efficiently.

Yes, Prabir, this sort of mismanagement is quite characteristic of Howrah Station. Imagine the plight of a passenger who wants to board the Falaknuma Express departing from the New Complex at 7.25 am. Despite Saraighat being on time, he will have to miss the ongoing train.

In this context I would like to mention that 12345/12346 Saraighat Exp is one of the most important trains of Eastern Rly,which gets the priviledge of departure from PF#9(along with trains like 12301,12311,12303,12381,12307 etc),which is very close to the Bay for entry & exit of vehicles

If I was the passenger I would get down from the train & move on to new complex platform,after crossing the yard.The train was standing very near to the station.

Good move if you are a lone passenger with limited luggage. But if one is travelling with the family and/or luggage/aged persons, then it is a difficult proposition, Prabir.

This problem is not only with Howrah, its seen in almost all stations down in south too. Before 9am, MV-MYS express will reach Mysore and it will be made to halt outside for almost 15-20 minutes and reaches Mysore station by 9:20am. This is almost daily affair there:(
Most of the trains reaching Bangalore Cantonment will not depart immediately and again will be made to wait outside Bangalore city station (for this reason people always miss connecting trains).
