With trains planned for speeds of 200kmph and even higher starting with the Bhopal shatabdi and the 2 rajdhanis, the breaking distance (for emergencies and otherwise) is going to increase accordingly. It would make sense for the drivers to have visibility of the track for at least this much distance ahead. Perhaps IR can explore setting up high resolution video cameras / motion or heat sensors (switching to infra red at night if required) at regular intervals (say on the electric poles with adequate vandalism-proofing) whose feed can be wirelessly captured by the locomotives and used by the drivers to decide the speed.
Although as the Chinese bullet train incident showed, all hi-tech support can come to naught - accidents will...
