IMPORTANT TOURIST INFO PERTAINING TO RAILWAY STATIONS IN DELHI
*************************************************************
#
1. New Delhi (Station Code- NDLS): Located at the Eastern end of Paharganj, the backpackers hub. The station has two entry/exit: a. Paharganj b. Ajmeri Gate. light luggage and you’re travelling off-peak hours.
# Most Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express Trains start from New Delhi
Entry/exit from Paharganj is advisable if the train is to start/arrive from/at Platform number 1 to 5 or you want to go to either Paharganj, Connaught Place, West Delhi or South Delhi on arrival.
Entry/exit from Ajmeri Gate is advisable if the train is to start/arrive from/at Platform number 6 to 12 or you want to go to either Old Delhi or East Delhi on arrival.
Porters are available at all the platforms in Red uniform with a metal badge on arm. They are likely to ask for exorbitant change and will be open to negotiate.
Cloak Room and Waiting Room/s are located at platform no. 1 (Paharganj side).
A budget hotel Ginger Rail Yatri Niwas is located well within the railway station campus on the Ajmeri Gate side. Room rate ranges from 1300-1400 rupees and has a 24 hour restaurant available. Perfect place to stay for late arrival or early departure. Advance booking required.
Connected by Delhi Metro Airport Express. The station is located at Ajmeri Gate exit.
Prepaid Auto rickshaw and Taxi counter is located right outside the platform at both entry and exit.
Cycle Rickshaws driven by humans are available at final exit on both the sides.
HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and a few other ATMs are located at Ajmeri Gate
A public toilet is located outside the platform on Ajmeri Gate side.
Valet Car & Bike parking is located at both (Pahargnaj and Ajmeri Gate) entry and exit.
Scams: This is the most favorite station for scamsters, some of the common scams you’re likely to face are
a. On arrival you’ll be approached by touts who will say the hotel you’ve reserved is closed, full or burnt down and will be happy to take you to the place where they will earn commission at your cost. The best way is to ignore them, head to your hotel. Ask your taxi driver not to stop anywhere in between.
b. At departure, someone will approach you to show ticket and tell that foreigner booking is closed or you need to reconfirm the ticket or collect the boarding card or the train is cancelled. All these are trick to take you to the so called ‘official tourist office’ (which is likely to be a travel agent). They would sell unconfirmed ticket at exorbitant price or offer you a car to your destination. Do not listen to them and straightaway head to the coach of your train.
c. Theft is rampant, so you need to keep an eye on your valuable and belongings.

2. Old Delhi (also called Delhi, Station Code: DLI): Located at west of Red Fort and South of Inter-state Bus Terminal (ISBT) Kashmere Gate, it is the oldest railway station in Delhi. It’s almost 7 kilometers north of Connaught Place.
The Old Delhi railway station is the starting point of many major trains, like Mussoorrie express, Samjhauta express and Pink City Express, amongst others. The station offers computerized reservation facility, which can be easily availed for booking tickets. It also has a tourist information centre to deal with any queries of visitors in the city.
It is served by the Chandni Chowk station of Delhi Metro. Use it only in non-peak hours. Heavy luggage not permitted on metro.
Porter Service available just like any other station.
Fixed price prepaid counter for auto rickshaw is available at the exit.
Public Toilet is located at the exit (south of the station).
Cloak Room and Waiting room are located at platform number 1.
Most hotels around Old Delhi railway station are low-end budget hotels, generally used by frequent domestic travelers. The only quality hotel close by is The Oberoi Maidens.
Although you are less likely to experience scams like New Delhi station, yet theft is very common. So never take your eyes off the belongings.
#
3. Hazrat Nizamuddin (Station Code: NZM): Located in the South Eastern part of the city, almost two kilometers away from Humayun Tomb.
Gate number one is generally used by travelers and all the tourist facilities are concentrated there.
Most trains to Agra (except Shatabdi Express) start from this station.
Inter-state Bus Terminal, Sarai Kale Khan is located nearby. The buses to Agra start here.
Prepaid Autorickshaw counter and ATMs are located outside platform number 1. Taxis are not available in prepaid, but are available for hire. You are expected to bargain with taxi drivers while using their services.
Right at the platform you may be approached by the touts offering taxi. If you know what to pay, you can strike a deal right there to avoid hassle outside the platform.
Porters are available at the platforms and drop point outside platform number one.
Enquiry counter is located on the Mezzanine floor, which can be reached by climbing up the stairs next to Comesum restaurant.
Cloak Room, Waiting Room and Retiring Room are located at platform number 1.
Comesum, a fast food joint is located on the northern end outside platform number one and is a good place for quick bite before/after the journey.
#

#
